Sir, I understand its alot easier to think of MB as half AB but why is it that when I try going up from M to A (MA = 3/2a) followed by from A to O (-3a) and then from O to B (OB=b) I get----- 3/2a-3a+b which is -3/2a + b ---------Which is different from what you got eventhough it would have been the same starting point and destination..

Vectors that are parallel have the same ratios, if you aren't familiar with ratios and trigonometry then I suggest learning about it. Since OB and MX vectors are parallel, by comparing the coefficients we can figure out what k is.
