Talking with the City of David Foundation about an excavation two decades in the making.
In 2004, a portion of the largest ritual bath in Jerusalem was discovered in the southern part of the City of David. This pool is mentioned in the book of John as the location of the healing of a man who was blind from birth. Finally, after almost 20 years of waiting, excavation has begun on the rest of the huge pool.
On today’s program, host Brent Nagtegaal discusses the renewed excavation of the Siloam Pool with Ze’ev Orenstein, director of international affairs for the City of David Foundation.

I was thrilled to run into Ze'ev when at City of David in 2020 and he pulled out of his pocket one of the seals newly discovered there.

Wow!! What a mind Mr. Orenstein has been gifted with. Not a skip in any of his thought processes during the entire interview. I'm envious. 🙂

Congratulations also to my City of Davis guide Judas. In 2019 I asked him when the rest of the Siloam Pool would be excavated. He replied then that it was a matter of time and money alone. Now it has become a reality sooner than we thought at the time: I look forward to being back soon!

Wouldn’t it be thrilling to not only walk the steps, but to also learn and sing the songs of ascent. Are they still sung? How I would love to experience that. What a profound time of worship!

Absolutely fascinating to learn the reason for the Psalms of Ascent! I wish growing up as a Catholic we were taught about the Rituals of Judaism and the Old Testament so we could understand the New Testament's meaning. They never made any sense to me because of poor explanations without the Jewish context. I only just learned that Easter is the Sunday after Passover, yet the priests of the Church still don't explain it like that. So much to learn!

I visited Israel in 2015. Our Israeli guide told us that many years earlier he guided Neil Armstrong, who said that climbing the southern steps was a more moving experience for him than walking on the moon had been.

The Gihon Spring was excavated and found over a decade ago and why is that not the starting point for finding the Temple mount and the Silom Pool?
