Standard Deviation (SD) is a numerical measure that does these things: 1)Tells you the average deviation each data point is from the mean (AVERAGE function) 2)Is a measure of variation or dispersion 3)Tells you how clustered the data points are around the mean 4)Helps you to decide if the mean fairly represents the data points. more...

5)For comparison purposes if one data set has a small SD and another has a large SD, then the mean with the smaller SD more fairly represents its data points. 6)In loose terms, SD tells you how good your mean is. 7)In our example if the distribution of car prices is bell shaped, we could add and subtract the SD to the mean and then say that 68% of values should lie within this range. No they are different, but the numbers from both a range and a named range will go into the function, like SUM. A range and a named range are both dynamic in the sense that if you insert a row between the two end cells, they will both update.

You can either delete the name in Name Manager (Formulas Ribbon), or if you want to keep the name, just type the cell references into the formula.

I am sure you have a work around to this but I do occasionally use individual additions. Let's say I pivot data to find out my admin fees for the year are £1m and I will have other items in that pivot so that will not change as that £1m are the costs. New costs will be in a new year. If I then want to split down further say R&D, Office, Marketing. Sometimes it is easier just to do quick calcs at the bottom and add individually. Yes I could copy the data and do index and match to another schedule but sometimes it is just quicker. I think if your data is not going to change then it is fine but I take your point and it would be no good for areas where changes could occur such as a prepayment schedule. Good videos.

Thanks for the awesome videos. Quick question: Once you name a specified range, for instance "sd," can you un-name the range and let the cells be their original names?
