ClassicalGuitarShed.com/perfectionism-vs-excellence/ Improve faster on guitar, by focusing on what moves you forward. Instead of chasing impossible goals, become more engaged in each moment of practice. This video will help to explain.

Alan.. I am impressed. What you have touched on here is an idea that is very old. The idea of excellence in ancient Greek philosophy is what virtue is all about. It is the idea that excellence is the mean ( or the right balance) between two extremes..So in this case, excellence in guitar playing is the mean between bad, sloppy or directionless practice and being unsatisfied when your playing is not absolutely perfect.

I've only watched 2 of your videos, 11 tips and this one. I am really impressed by the way you direct our thinking before and during our practice time. I mean you really had me pegged well, I have a lot of self defeating thoughts in regards to learning and practicing the guitar. Now I'm ready to begin with a clear head! Thank you.

I didn't play for 20 years, I'm finally relaxed and loving to play guitar. When I was younger, I had classes with Frederick Hand. I hated the guitar because I could not be perfect. You have changed my perspective and I am enjoying the guitar for the first time. Interesting to note that 20 years later I'm making the exact same mistakes on scale studies and right hand exercises. I feel like I've got to go back to kindergarten and start over.

Violinist Jascha Heifetz was considered a "perfectionist" but he believed that a musical artist must have complete mastery of his instrument and that the instrument must bend to the artist's will. Of course, his mastery was coupled with immense talent.

Unfortunately, we as performers we will never stop fetishizing perfectionism until *listeners* stop placing unrealistic demands on us. Classical musicians get the most flack from any group about mistakes. It's a toxic problem that produces nervous, unhealthy performers, many of whom need to take beta blockers prior to a performance because of it.

The most important thing to remember when seeing a musician perform is that they don’t perform perfectly. Only the musician knows the mistakes that they make.
