Harry Hi-Pipes is a beast for sure Paul. On a related note, I had the honor of seeing Excelsior #1 in the flesh last weekend at Motorcyclepedia in Newburgh, NY. Hi Paul, great video, and the smile on your face when she fired up was priceless. I was happy to see you enjoying yourself like that. Good luck with the chemo, and your recovery. I am a fellow Brit, and I also used to build my own bike frames (before my shop was destroyed in a widfire in 2018). Your videos have definitely been a huge inspiration in my wanting to put together another shop, and build more bikes, as soon as I am able to make that happen. Enjoy?? Quite the understatement Paul. Watching your friend run the starter made my shoulders hurt. Clearly those cylinders produce quite a bit of compression! I can’t even imagine riding that on a road course! I hope you’re feeling better, you certainly look/sound like it. You get extra credit for discussing/describing an awful crash man. I’ve definitely piled a few race bikes , but there aren’t many I like to discuss !!!

Thanks Glen. Harrys compression ratio is about 8:1 and you do have to hang onto the starter. Ruby Racer has a compression ratio of 12.5:1 so you have to pay a little more attention :)

When Harry didnt run properly and the plus were wet it reminds me of my Laverda 750SF, every time I go to start it usually with a gap of a few weeks it will run on one cylinder and it can be either. I remove both plugs and heat them with a blow lamp, this works every time. I suspect its running a bit rich. To see you back is well corth a few coffies. Thanks

Great to see you back in the shop! I'd make sure to have a big red kill switch installed before taking a spin.

Pilot here - carb icing is a function of how close the dew point and air temperature are, along with the humidity level. As a student pilot I had my carb ice up excessively on a July evening, when I (at that time) would have least expected it to.

Pertaining to the throttle sticking: My first car was a 1968 Pontiac Grand Prix, and I did A LOT of burnouts(power brake/smoke show). Rarely while doing a burnout, the throttle would stick. Luckily I always had the presence of mine to turn off the ignition key, killing the engine. The strange thing is, I could never find anything wrong afterword. I eventually figured out what was happening. That car had a solid rod style throttle linkage, kinda like your bike has. While doing a burnout, the engine would torque to the side a bit, and put that linkage into a bind. When I turned off the key, the engine would return back to its resting position, removing the tension from the throttle linkage and allowing it to release and return to the idle position. It doesn't seem like your motorcycle engine could really move around much(at least not like a 400ci V8 with worn rubber motor mounts), but maybe something(frame/forks) flexed enough to put a bind on your linkage.

Yes, the throttle mystery. We had the bike on the dyno for almost a full day, and the throttle never, ever stuck...

Great to see you and Mitch back in the workshop. You're looking much stronger and it was so good to see your happiness when Harry barked in full throat again! Looking forward to watching more postings from you soon. Stephan, ex-Langley BC, of late in Moncton, fighting the rust off my lathe and tools in my workshop/shed!
