I met a German couple that had one of these. I told them about great and beautiful backroads that these trucks can easily handle, what did they say? Only Mercedes downer was rear crashbar digging in during offroad trials. Has all the right items, with difflocks etc and I'm jealous of the impressive engine , being resigned to 'mere' 5.9 liter OM366LA in my Unimog. The 1980's firetruck approach with no vehicle electronics will be near 100% reliable and globally fixable. I met some MAN global travellers with a new truck with numerous horror stories of being marooned by high technology. I know which of these 2 trucks I would go with if I hadn't had the Unimog implant.

German manufacturing is great. No uneven panel gaps, everything lines up perfectly, and everything is built to last. They take their time and do it is right instead of rushing a build just to make an extra dollar.

A little bit sneaky on the Fire-truck build. As you can see early on when the build company first gets the red truck, it says "1222" on the door - that is a 12-ton GVWR truck with a 220 hp V6 (OM 401/421/441) engine. But later when the "cab has been painted" and he tilts it up to show the engine, the door insignia says "1428" - that is a 14-ton truck with a 280-hp, 14-litre V8 (OM 402/422/442) that he is (rightfully) showing off. Somewhere along the line they swapped in a third vehicle (the green police truck with the big cab has a "1217" on the door - 12-ton but less powerful 170-hp engine). Still - I love the workmanship and practical attitude of the smaller builder. Excellent end-product and terrific documentary!!!

What I thought was a masterpiece of a production decision was that you featured both vehicles, one, which the everyday person whom aspires to owning a custom built 4x4 offroad motorhome could envisage, and the Qatari 8x8 monster motorhome of the opulence as standard, money no object variety. I respected both build companies and their customers decisions on their vehicle preferences. There is absolutely nothing wrong about having the vehicle of your choice built to your specifications and to your price level. The Qatari 8x8 exactly fitted the design criteria of the owner, and was outstanding in every way to meeting that requirement. It truly was an elite, land based super yacht of it's type and great to see being created. The Mercedes 4x4 was far more practical and user friendly for the owner, and it lacked nothing (except perhaps a CTIS). Thank you for this excellent video.

It was HD with 4x4, portal axles, living quaters and solar panels. It was a MAN or Unimog chassis I believe. It could go anywhere, unlike 18 wheeler or bus chassis which are pavement only. The 'bed' came apart and there was a technique that was shown how to exactly fit/drive/park into the shipping container and then crawl out through a emergency hatch since the mirrors/doors were completely flush with the container walls, about 6 inches on each side. German Engineering of course. 5-600,000$ MSRP new though....

On a serious note. Of course i did not build this and i live in the U.S. but this did give me a sense of pride for being of german descent. They're ability to build and engineer some of the coolest, most unique, and reliable things makes me proud to have some of that blood coursing thru me. Tho im as red blooded as they come :)

@Sean Hershkowitz no doubt. Always have been and always will be. My feelings are if you don't love the U.S.A. you can get the hell out! I always stood to recite the pledge of allegiance in school. Which should be madatory. And ill alwAys stand remove my hat for the national anthem. And am sickened by anyone who doesnt.

William Hendrix that’s pretty standard procedure for any kind of production environment
@williamhendrix32535 жыл бұрын
Numsz yeah, obviously. but he’s being led by the head of the company, who isn’t wearing a vest, and they are the highest paying customers ever. so normally you wouldn’t bust their balls like that. it’s kind of funny that they did

@@williamhendrix3253 It's to show workers that there are people, who don't work there, are on site. They don't know about swinging loads, forklifts being driven around, welding arcs, etc. It's not busting their balls. It's informing the tons of works that there are people around that are not familiar with OTJ safety and procedures.

Andrew Delashaw and things are exactly the same in germany as here. they would totally know what “OTJ” procedures are.
