Hi Jenny I’m excited for your new project.I live in north central Maryland zone 7. Two years ago a storm took out several large oak trees and gave me a new garden to plan and plant. I think one of the best thing about gardening is the planning then planting. I look forward to seeing what you come up with this fall.

I’m so glad you’re going with the natural look for the pond. That and the woodland garden will be amazing. I’m with you on no bridge, Jenny. Maybe add some Japanese Iris at water’s edge if you’re a fan. I love that old road! Nostalgic for me!

Good morning, That is a great view from the hillside woods road. 🌞 I grew up in southwestern PA. We had a great hillside woods to explore. At one time it had been farmland. The woods had reclaimed the land back to its natural state. There were large sections of native plants. There were Mayflowers above an old farm road, thick moss carpets in a break in the trees, a spring fed cove covered with violets, mostly purple, some blue and white, and rare yellow violets. At the end of the cove was an old brick spring. There were great oak trees, maple and sycamore trees, wild grape vines, plenty of places to play and rest. There was a power line right of way filled with delicious blackberries. It was an incredible natural place to escape into. I include small sections of these elements in my surburban MA garden. ❤ I will like to see how you recreate the Blue Ridge mountainscape on the woodland hill. I can almost see your vision. 🌞 I would like to see which native plants you included. I hope you keep the road as a path. The paths in the PA woods were animal paths we would follow. They lead you from one area to the next. It would be nice to keep a few remnants of the history of the place. I will love to see what you do with it. It will be a special place. ❤

Hi Jenny! I am going to love watching that sweet road being developed. It reminds me of the road at historic White's Ferry which crossed the Potomac River from MD to VA. That little shaded road is lined with Virginia Bluebells on both sides in the Spring and is stunning! Bluebells disappear by the time other perennials and shrubs develop for the season. I can see that the ideas to develop this area are exploding in your head. Can't wait!

Good morning, Jenny! Loved this one! First, I have to tell you that I love your cap! It looks so pretty and comfy! Second, I think your spot on to bring in some Japanese maples, especially along the old roadway. That area would be absolutely gorgeous in the fall with the beautiful leaves and pathway! Please keep the holly tree, I was even thinking of how beautiful it would be to add some sort of stone to the roadway, like Oklahoma Blue , but I don’t know if that would be a good idea considering how long the roadway is and how much it would cost to put that in. It depends on if y’all want to keep it accessible for using the Bobcat on it. I have so many different ideas spinning around in my brain for that gorgeous area!🍁🍂🌺🌺🌸

This is such a lovely, natural project. I’m excited to watch it unfold. I will say, my mama has that red clay and I feel for yall lol. I’d be renting me a wood chipper and I’d be chipping every one of those trees I took down to mulch that adorable road behind the pond. I think you said you walk your dog back there. How lovely would it be to not have that red mud path? Free wood chips go a long ways lol. Have a blessed day, thanks for another great video!

Jenny, you have surprised me yet again! When you spoke of you and Jerry's love of the natural woods of Appalachia as inspiration for your Woodland Garden I immediately had a vision of Rhododendrons, native Azaleas, Laurels, Honeysuckle , Wild Magnolias, Redbuds and Dogwoods maybe a meandering sweep of sweet little Trilliums or maybe an occasional Jack in the Pulpit and plenty of ferns. I was so surprised I actually laughed aloud when you first mentioned Japanese Maples! Clearly I had the wrong idea of your intended direction but have no doubts your Woodland gardens will be glorious and full of surprises for all of us to enjoy and admire! As for Jackson stepping up to say, "Mama, I want to help with this project", I think this is a blessing beyond measure. I expect you have a son who will forever be anchored to his land. ❤

Excited for this project! Gorgeous view. Yes, I vote against a bridge. Would love to see a gorgeous, natural look, not contrived. I like evergreen interest ideas...how about a few scattered camellias, both sasanquas and japonicas, that you'd leave unpruned and natural? That old holly at the spring reminds me of the huge historic holly trees that we have in Pinehurst. It'd be neat to keep that as long as possible. You'll have fun with the pond edges, designing the mix of rocks/stones and perimeter plants, both in the water and playing amongst the stones. 😊 Jackson has learned great work ethic and skills from you and Jerry. 🥰

With the elevation/grade and the spring fed pond, create a mountain stream with water pumped to top from pond. Creates a closed loop for the water as well as provides movement in the pond reducing algae. I have a vision, if you want.

Hi Jenny, we enjoy your videos. I would suggest that area would be a great place for daphnes. There is a slope so the roots will not stay wet. If you plant them towards the front of the woodlands they should do great. We have several in a similar area and they are about 5 feet tall and wide and we are in north Georgia.

Thank you for the walk through of new project. The description of sun mapping helped me. We have cut some trees so I am excited to start planting new areas. You mentioned using Japanese Maples. I adore Japanese Maples. How do you keep the Japanese Beetles from destroying the leaves? I have used the spray when present technique, grub granules, and a water in root take up insecticide. I feel like it helps but not enough. Is there a type of Japanese Maple that is less attractive to the beetles?
