Exclusion Fencing for Feral Hogs Around Wildlife Feeders

Dr. Billy Higginbotham discusses how feral hogs can negatively impact the white-tailed deer industry in Texas, which contributes billions of dollars annually to the Texas economy. Competition with deer for food and space should lead to landowners to exclude feral hogs from feeders. Recommendations for fence heights based on recent research is given. We at THE FEED SAVER company have erected hog panels for several years now, and I have designed a inner liner that you put into your 55gal. Drum so all your feeds even proteins controlled with a timer are completely dry. (Molds, mildew, or any contamination never occurred) NO MORE CLOGGING. Check out the videos. The protein in the video is five months old the battery failed, the protein is still wonderful and ready to go. That is great for animals and the hunter. We are growing some beautiful deer coats and antlers, y's drops' and kickers with great weight size too.

I put the panel to the outside of the t post and attach with stainless steel zip ties from Harbor Freight.

What keeps the hogs from rooting underneath the fence? Is the fence recessed into the ground at all?

They're usually not that smart or driven to get in.

Been doing this for 20 years, I have never experienced a hog getting in by going over or under the typical hog panel in the video. Cow another story. Cow I have had to put 2 strands of barbed wire across the top from post to post. Especially Longhorn Cattle. Also the fawns can get what ever goes thru and over the fence, the spinner can typically be adjusted accordingly. The corn being slung tends to concentrate in the pen.

No, you will need two strands of barbed wire across the top. Top wire about 8 to 10 in off the top of the hog panel has been my experience.

How are the fence posts installed and how deep. In concrete?

Drive into the ground only a little over a ft. incase you ever want to move it. They will not go anywhere.

I put up a fence with 6 panels and 12 t-posts in about an hour with a little help. Use a tpost driver for sure. At this size I'm getting 3 mature 8pt bucks inside at one time with no issues. No pigs have gotten inside my fence. Before putting up the fence I lost $100+ worth of protein and corn to a very large sounder of pigs.

How tall are the fence posts you're using?

Hog panels are only 30" tall so the posts only need to have 3 feet exposed above ground.

I have used both 6ft and 6ft 6in post depending on if cattle in play. If cattle I put two strand of barbed wire above the panel, post to post, other wise the cow will be in there in a heartbeat. I do not drive the tpost in, but a little over a foot incase I ever want to move it. If you have problem getting tpost out of ground when moving get a bucket of water from nearest creek and pour at the base to loosen up the post, you can typically pull out by hand. All else fails tractor jack and a chain wrapped around the post.

I built one of these fences around my feeder per the instructions in the video, but it's keeping out both hogs and deer. I even cut three places for enhanced fawn access, so they have plenty of places to enter. My game cam captures images of deer outside of the fence, but they never get inside. I even put some rice bran piles inside the fence to attract the deer (in case the corn wasn't enough incentive). My land is pretty dense pine plantation rather than an open field as in the video, so perhaps the trees affect the deer behavior. Any ideas are appreciated.

We found pen size relates to comfort. The pen in the video. is to small. We use minimum 160ft of panels or fencing 34" high. Some small yearling will not go into pen due to height but will feed outside while mother does feed inside

Give it time eventually the deer will jump the fence. I erected hog panels around my feeder and it took over a month before deer would jump the fence. Be patient they will jump it.
