Wow, that's crazy to think of. It makes sense though. That is, if you never really had any reason to head out west on 422 for any reason. I grew up smack in between Reading and Pottstown and was born in 1986 (the year the plant opened) so I've been seeing it my whole life. Never fails to grab your attention though!!

@@Na-wj2ts Yeah, they're a hell of a site for sure. Have you ever driven past Three Mile Island?? That's _really_ crazy. The river is actually super narrow there. The water between the road and the plant is maybe 100 feet wide, so the plant is *super* close to the road. It's really weird if you're not used to seeing it.

Not much of an exclusive tour, since they weren't permitted to view the control room nor the power generators. That's the heart of the plant. Took a tour near the water towers decades ago. Wasn't a biggie, but that was prior to 9/11. Also, some roads nearby used to be open to the public.

The roughly 85000 metric tons of used nuclear fuel rods that have been safely stored could fit inside a football stadium and in 30 years lose half of the remnant radiation and in 100 it essential poses no danger they are stored in a dry cask that is triple lined and poses no impact to the environment really nuclear waste isn't like people imagine it in movies and shows

Clean and safe?... The problem is that at this time we just don't possess the technology to responsibly produce electrical power using Nuclear reactors. One of the biggest dilemmas people forget is the waste and by products left by nuclear reactors and atom splitting (fission). The whole operation of a nuclear facility is vast and complex. The % of error and miscalculated failures is a constant peril. While for the last 60+ years since the commercial use nuclear reactors have been considered safe.. 3 major accidents proves that all progress can simply be wiped out by an accident since it would be a catastrophe for any region affected by such event. Until a better generation of nuclear reactors comes. This form of power production is simply a ticking bomb. (literally)
@maxdavies99584 жыл бұрын
Less deaths than solar and wind. Clean, small amount of waste that is also reusable, stupid amount of safety systems to prevent anything from going wrong, Crap load of electricity, small area needed compared to other forms of clean electricity. Seems good to me.
@WNFlyer Жыл бұрын
@@maxdavies9958 Exactly. People always bring up these accidents and don't actually research them and don't realize how much safer it has been since these accidents. And just to get into statistics about how safe nuclear is, the death rate per TWh of electricity produced in lignite coal plants is somewhere around 32-33 and regular coal is around 25 while nuclear is at a chill .03. People can say whatever they want about how dangerous nuclear is but that wont change the actual numbers that prove more deaths have occurred because of problems at coal plants compared to nuclear. If we can have both nuclear and renewables mixed with each other then this will be the best way we can get by in energy production, for now at least.
