A first look at the new 4K restoration of Terry Gilliam’s first film as solo director, Jabberwocky, a beautifully crazed landmark in British cinema. Gilliam, Michael Palin and Annette Badland will be in attendance for the 40th anniversary screening of the film at the BFI London Film Festival on Thursday 5 October.

Jabberwocky has been fully restored to 4K by the BFI National Archive and The Film Foundation 4K, supervised by Gilliam himself, with funding provided by the George Lucas Family Foundation. The Criterion Collection UK/SONY Pictures Home Entertainment are releasing a special director’s edition on Blu-ray and DVD.

The cinematography is glorious with emphasis on film grain, natural light, open aperture, and color saturation. Any given frame could be a painting by a renaissance master.

Been watching this since it was first issued on VHS. Absolute work of art. Perhaps the most realistic portrayal of a medieval city.

Its by no means realistic. The medieval wasnt as grimy and dull (colorless) as the stereotype says. But still a great movie

If this piece of junk is a work of art I've been going to the wrong museums all my life I just hated it senseless nonsense. Thank God it wasn't the wonderful Monty Python group that put their name to this

Fantastic film. Terry Gilliam is a genius. Because he was he had to deal with the bastards in Hollywood who were insanely jealous of it.

Terry Gilliam adding that potato is the anachronismsI can think of in this film. I feel it’s a knod to his home country in the U.S.

Looks like the bottom part of the screen is cut off. I remember in the original, the little girl in line sticks her tongue out at Dennis and in this version, you can barely see her doing that.

I thought the same thing. In fact, Jabberwocky inspired GW a lot. I think it is a reference for the 1st Edition Fantasy RPG.

I assume it's an expression of authority. "How far can we go in humiliating this poor b*stard?"

I agree with what Gilliam later said half jokingly: this film's audio should have been entirely replaced with period music, presumably choirs, and, also presumably, text card inserts should have been utilized, like a silent movie.

for god's sake, why do you people still removing the noise!!!!!!!!!!! THE NOIIIIIIIISE IIIIIIIIISSSS GOOOOOOOOOOOD!!!! You can't see it? You make the picture lifeless, the crispyness has gone!!!!!! OMG ... whyyyyyyyyyy again. This is so stupid to apply the denoise plugin. Make tonal corrections, make scratches disappear, but this bloody denoising is killing the picture!
