Any car that is a partial car (for locked down camera operation) or any car that crashes has to be a "kit car" made of fiberglass castings. If they appear to be legit metal (such as debris in a crash) then that's likely just a touch of CGI added in. And that's the way you SHOULD do effects. Get as much "in-camera" as you can and use computer graphics only as needed. But I LOVE the fact that it appears (though I could be wrong) that they used as many of the actual real cars as possible whenever possible. Such as at the start of the Le Mans race. Those engine sounds straight off the camera pick-up wasn't faked in the studio!

That's a Tub rig, (Or that's what I think they call it). They attach the back half of the car to this super fast semi truck and tow it around the track. The reason why, is the camera equipment is so heavy, the car probably couldn't safely travel at the speeds needed to make the shot look legit. (Plus a GT40 is slow low, he probably couldn't see either) HD cameras, and the robotic stuff needed for some of these shots are extremely hard to do without weighing the car down with shit.
