Also, The Grand Tour doesn't only have the three presenters, a lot of the producers came with them as well. Ferrari wasn't always the company that we see it as today. They were winning, yes. But they were also the underdog when you consider the limited resources they had to work with. I know the real story behind the race in '66 and the development of the GT40, and just saw 'Ford v, Ferrari' this weekend. Superb film. As a cinema fan I appreciate the needs of condensing the story and making clearly defined characters so the film is cohesive. But even knowing where it was wrong and the technical failures such as tracks not looking right and glowing hot metal being handled bare handed five minutes later, I found the film very well done and enjoyable. All that being said I'd prefer a 12 hour long film about it written and dircted by James May.

Always a pleasure to hear James. I'm not sure if he intentionally abbreviated the Ford/Ferrari initial meeting(s) story or is unaware of the actual history. I met Roy Lund mere days before his relatively recent death. We discussed the meetings with Enzo. There were actual two meetings. The first meeting was the technical team that went over with he as their engineering head. All went well in that initial meeting and Ford then sent over the accountants and so-called "suits". That, of course, was the end of the deal.

let's not forget that ford only "won" 66 and 67 ;-) the 68 and 69 winning "GT40"s were not really Ford (except the now smaller Ford 4.9L engine core of course) they were made from "John Wyer Automotive Engineering Ltd." in Slough, England , search for: GT40P/1075 (Mk I) John Wyer Automotive Engineering Ltd was the original maker of the GT40 mkI and at 1966 he took over the Ford Advanced Vehicles facility at Slough and made some derivatives of that mkI model now named "Mirage M1" they bought the rights to racing the "GT40" in 1968 , they made 2 new cars and rebuild a Mirage as GT40/1074 to go and race at le mans. so there you have it...only the first 2 wins had any REAL ford involvement ,wait what?? you actually believe that? actually carol Shelby re-build the british made mkI and went on to win le mans 2 times, ford was just...a name....

Considering Ford's treatment of Aston Martin I think Ferrari dodged a bullet there. I don't even like Ferrari but would still be on their side. Ford's approach is a bit like a billionaire owning a football team and just throwing loads of money at it until they win the championship. And yet, when Ford entered the GT40s the first time, the writing was on the wall at Modena: 'They're coming for us'. Even worse for them, was losing the GT category that year, to Ford powered Cobras. A sign of what was to come. After the '66 through '69 dominance of Ford, and then two years of Porsche 917 kicking their asses, Ferrari abandoned the prototype sports car racing forever, to focus solely on F1. It was the end of little companies being a dominant force in sports car racing, with McLaren giving way to Porsche, too, in the Can-Am challenge racing cup in America.

Ferrari did win over and over again thereafter including in 2019 with the 488 GTE and they never mention that right after Ford won at Le Mans Ferrari paid back at Ford's home in Daytona by taking the top three positions in the race!

Ford won at Le Mans 2 more times after their first 1,2,3 victory at Le Mans. It didn't matter after. They beat Ferrari at his game, even with Ferrari bringing the GT38 with for that year. Ford simply didn't care about Daytona. They just wanted to beat Ferrari at Le Mans.

Regardless if Ford won, Ferrari wonbthe constructors championship and on top of that best Ford on home soil, Daytona. In a 1,2,3. But at tge end, tbh, the true winner us always Ferrari, a small little company in North Italy naking the biggest car manufacturer spend millions just to beat them on track. They needed the help if English engineers, who I always going amazing never had a brand to beat a small Italian company in Ferrari, considering Itsly was destroyed in the war and England not! And ofcourse they cared about Daytona, the whole grid was full of Ford's, so stop finding excuses😂😂😂 and on American soil.

@@Happy-wb8gi Then there was this little American company called Shelby American who went over to Europe and was beating Ferrari's rear end, in fact in 1964 Enzo Ferrari begged the FIA to cancel the last race of the season because Shelby's cars were beating the Ferraris so bad that if the last race had been run Shelby American would have likely become the champion they were so much better than the Ferraris but due to Enzo Ferrari getting the last race canceled that gave Ferrari a very hollow championship. Shelby American via Alan Mann racing went on to kick Ferraris rear ends in 1965 with the Daytona Coupes, so you can park your little tiny Ferrari BS, Ferrari was like the giant company compared to Shelby American.

Ah the classic underdog tale of the owner of a massive American corporation being slighted by the owner of a small, financially failing Italian company and then sinking millions upon millions of dollars into a slapdash racing program to get revenge. It warms the heart. Also, the movie was amazing, I love James May and the GT40 is my favorite car of all time (don’t @ me bro). But sometimes you just gotta sit back and realize how ridiculous the whole situation is, ya know?

Although Ferrari was obviously an arrogant SOB. Ford was worse by a long way. So pleased they did not merge. Ferrari will always be Ferrari and the worlds Sports Car. Ford will always be "Fix Or Repair Daily"
