Nicola always comes across as a lovely human being. Love her as Peri on screen and in the audios. Very underrated companion.

Nicola was the prettiest of all companions and still is! And as stated below, her English accent is far better than American. But true, I thought she was American.

In a Dr Who magazine interview she did way back then, she revealed she had two accents. I was floored!

Every American who saw it knew that she wasn't American - or at least suspected it - about half an hour into Planet of Fire.

Such a lovely woman. I fell in love with her the first time I saw her oh so many days ago watching reruns of "Dr. Who" on one of the new OTA stations (Retro) available now. She is the kind of woman I'd love to spend the rest of my life with --- and especially that accent would be the clincher.

I really enjoyed the interview, Nicola was the first assistant I remember watching as a 5/6-year-old, as Colin Baker is my Doctor.

With all due respect to Nicola Byrant, I love her English accent far better than her American one. But being a yank myself, I have a thing for girls with British accents.

Before Karen Gillan, Nicola Bryant was my favourite Who companion. I was born in 84 when she made her debut in Doctor Who as Peri.

What's odd to me is that they had her use a mock-American accent in public. When Peri first showed up, it was clear to everyone I knew that the actress (Ms. Bryant) wasn't really an American. We used to laugh at how she acted, dressed, and talked. I remember one friend saying to me, "This is what they really think American women are like!" It was a laugh...rather like Bruce Boa (a Canadian) playing the rude American in Fawlty Towers. The following season, with Colin Baker, we heard complaints about how the Doctor was becoming "too American." He was rude, violent, nasty, and dressed like a clown. They were even annoyed with the theme song at that point. Nicola Bryant did a fantastic job playing a partner to Baker's Doctor, but no one I knew ever thought she was an American. Peri was supposed to be American, and that was fine. As Brandon said (earlier in this thread), there were "mistakes." Someone who knew the different American accents would recognize that she wasn't from any place in the US. I wonder why the BBC wanted Nicola to pretend all the time. Maybe they thought the American audience would go away. Never! We loved the Doctor. We loved the companions. We were not going anywhere. We were debating whether Peri was stronger (as a character) than Tegan, and why Adric was ever on the show. Never would we have stopped watching unless they utterly ruined the Doctor. And most of us adored Peri. PS: I think Simon Baker played a fantastic American character on the Mentalist.

The problem was that the producers of the show had intended to hire an American actress and had mistakenly believed that Bryant was American. Bryant had been spotted playing an American character in a stage show, and was invited to audition on the basis that they thought that she was American. It's unclear at what point that they found out that she wasn't, but whenever it was it was too late to undo all the publicity so they thought it a better idea to keep the pretence up. I'm from Australia, and when I first heard her I thought it was a Brit doing an American accent, but when they said she was American I thought I must have been wrong. It all seemed bizarre and annoying at the time. Not helped by Colin Baker's performance.

I had no idea Peri was not American when I was a kid. It still puzzles me why they didn't hire an American to play her part. Nicola looks great. Good interview sir. I also enjoyed your John Levine interview a few months ago. I'm looking forward to meeting Peter Davison in May here in Texas.

The story I heard was they wanted an American actress to play the role and Nicola tricked them at her audition. They thought she was American and perfect for the role.

How could a Nu-hu production improve those classics? With generic orchestral tracks? Pedestrian directing? Ancient Egyptian-esque monster designs? video game graphics? Catchphrases? Please.

I always thought she was American until I got older and started listening for her mistakes. Overall she did just fine. Then I start listening to her British accent and think she’s faking it. It’s bizarre
