I was one of those folks who have had ambivalent feelings about John Wayne as an actor, until The Cowboys. I still can't get over how fine and real he is in the movie. For me, it is his best performance. His performance is moving before he even leaves his ranch. I also became a life-long fan of A Martinez after this film. I'll watch him in anything. I was glad to see Robert Carradine and to find out he is quite funny and charming. I like him in cowboy movies and I wish there were more to watch. I especially appreciate how y'all honored David Carradine by speaking well of his talent and humor. I felt Robert's love and appreciation for his brother. Such a fine interview. Thank you for honoring one of my favorite films. A very real classic.

This movie was very special to me. Saw it with my dad and little brother in 72. Dad was a cattleman and a huge Duke fan. My brother and I were two of the hands. Dad even owned a grandson of Cochise the Alpaloosa that Duke rode in El Dorado I think it was.

If you haven't already I suggest an interview with Clay O'Brien. As a boy he was already a cowboy and starred in two John Wayne movies (Cahill and The Cowboys), was the boy Mark with James Garner in One Little Indian and several other westerns. He eventually quit movies to do rodeos full time and is a champion many times over in that sport.

Great getting these two together. Wonderful remembrances from both. Talking about Wayne and meeting him for the first time, Roger Ebert spoke of his experience meeting him on the set of The Green Berets for an interview, Wayne sticking his catchers mitt sized hand out in greeting saying, "Hi, I'm Duke Wayne". And Ebert totally awe struck and nearly speechless in his presence barely able to get it out, saying simply "I know".

The best "meeting John Wayne" story I ever read was from an actual Green Beret who met him at Ft Bragg when they came to film the movie, the guy had already done 2 tours with Special Forces in Vietnam and was back at Bragg as part of the training cadre there, this will be a bit paraphrased but it went like this; When I first heard that John Wayne was coming to Bragg to make a film about us I thought "Oh great, just what we need, a man who's never heard a shot fired in anger in his life and he's gonna make a movie about US? The Green Beret!?!?! Well he better hope I don't run across him cause I'll give him a piece of my mind he'll never forget". Several weeks later I heard a commotion in the hallway outside of my office and when I stepped out into it to see what it was I was standing face to face with none other than John Wayne himself, he stuck his hand out and said "HI, I'm John Wayne (as if he needed an introduction) it's a pleasure to meet you", after two weeks of sitting around thinking about all the things I was going to say to him to tell him off if I ever got the chance he was such an imposing figure standing there in front of me my mind was a total blank, all I could think to do was shake his hand and like a little kid stumble over my words saying "Yes Mr Wayne, of course Mr Wayne, it's a pleasure to meet you Mr Wayne". After shaking his hand and making a complete idiot out of myself stumbling all over my words the way I did I spun around and walked back into my office and sat down at my desk and said to myself "Anyone who ever thinks they're gonna tell John Wayne off is in for a real eye opener when they stand face to face with him".

Re Longmire: Durant was set in Las Vegas, NM. The Sheriff's office is just off the town square. The door is still marked as Absaroka County Sheriff, Durant, Wyoming.

Another great interview, Rob. Loved it because I liked the movie "The Cowboys." It had a great cast. Of course there was John Wayne, but also Roscoe Lee Brown and Bruce Dern. When I first saw it I was impressed with both Robert Carradine and A. Martinez and followed their careers afterwards. Both did good things. (A. Martinez was in a two-part "CSI" titled "A Bullet Runs Through It" which would have been a great movie. Then I followed him on "Longmire" too.) I enjoy your interviews so much.

I remember the furor over the violence in the movie and the censors wanted to cut it out: in fact they cut a lot of the violence when it first aired on TV. But wiser heads prevailed and it was intact in theaters. The violence showed why the cowboys were impelled to kill the rustlers, brutally at times. Fave scene was when the rustler was getting dragged and managed to pull the horse over, holding h down with a rein and saying don't let him up, he'll kill me, legs busted, then Cimarron cuts the rein, horse gets up and drags the guy off. Skillful writing/directing.

Bruce Dern said in a interview about 25 years ago that the famous fight scene he had with John Wayne was so physical that he got injured in the process. He said Duke was so much bigger and stronger than he was he ended up in a back brace for six weeks after the film. "He really thumped me" Dern said

I remember when COVID hit and Netflix gave a free month out to try it. I looked around and nothing interested me at all until I hit on "Longmire". That show was incredible and A. Martinez was one of the best characters on that show. Great writing and acting and I watched all six seasons within two weeks and cancelled Netflix. I would love to hear Robert Carradine talk about his father because seldom does anyone talk about him, and he was in so many great movies and bad ones too.

Fantastic interview, Rob! We went to the Drive-in theater to see the movie “ The Cowboys “, and I’m pretty sure us kids were in our Jammie’s too, lol. Mr. Word, your interviews are unparalleled. Would love to see your style and substance replicated in other areas of interest, but alas, one has but a single lifetime to hone one’s craft. Honestly, I’d written off “Hollywood” as a hopeless cesspool. I stopped watching new releases entirely because they were more often soul robbing than enriching. With the advent of streaming, I’ve experimented more, but I hit the stop button on 90% of the content within 15 minutes. But, your talks are always excellent and have me wanting to dig deeper into the filmography of your guests. You have a knack for shutting out the deafening roar of Hollywood’s incessant pandering and letting thoughtfulness and sweet insights come to the fore. Your guests trust you and you honor them with your deep knowledge of their contributions. And they respond by opening up their hearts and sharing memories that would be otherwise lost to time. By virtue of their open and gracious personalities they honored the Duke’s memory superbly. Not a snarky note to be heard - how touching… and rare.

What a wonderful interview reflection and remembrance of John Wayne and how he presented himself and the example of strength, kindness and leadership. Humanity that is missing today where the mode is transhumanism and digital characters. Both actors humility and love of their craft and growth. Thanks for another good one, Rob! I'm reminded that I started watching the soap opera that A was in because Harry Blackstone (Jr.) was in it for a week or two. We didn't know each other well, but I guess you could loosely call us "friends." I just knew I had seen this guy, A, before. It was right near the beginning of the whole VHS thing. A buddy told me that A was one of "The Cowboys," and made a bootleg copy of the film for me. Sure enough, that WAS the guy! Really good movie. I mean, REALLY good. Those kids sure pulled off their scenes. Even the non-actors. I'm not sure that Duke's death was a great idea, but it sure worked.

I was neighbors with the Rydell family and attended the Wrap Party for The Cowboys. I was about 13. I distinctly remember that before the party started, they filmed the famous scene where Dern shoots the Duke. This was shot on a sound stage in the corner of the building. It sounds like this might've been an extra take or maybe something for the trailer, as I don't remember multiple takes. I was a good 50 yards away but don't recall any real loud noises from the guns, just little pops. Mr. Rydell did introduce me the the Duke, and I remember that in order to shake his hand I stuck it straight up in the air.

"Summers over" "Just about" This movie... these lines and the musical score. John Williams knew how to cast the French Horn - unbelievable emotion. I want that piece of music played at my funeral.

And that great Wil Anderson eulogy Mr. Knightlinger says could be said about John Wayne also..."This must be a lonely place to leave him, but he is not alone. Because, many of his kind rest here with him. The prarie was like a mother to Wil Anderson. She cared for him while he lived and (gruff voice on the 'and' to keep from crying), she is nursing him while he sleeps".

Loved this interview...I never like the movie Cowboys because the Duke died, but after watching this I think I'll have to watch the Cowboys again!!
