Making movies with John Wayne, Lee Marvin, Tom Selleck, my Father & brothers! Robert Carradine AWOW

Working with legends like John Wayne, Lee Marvin, Tom Selleck and his famous actor father, John, the youngest Carradine son has lots of memories and stories to share. Young Carradine made his feature film debut as one of THE COWBOYS with John Wayne in 1972, co-starred with his brothers David and Keith, along with the Keach brothers, the Quaid brothers and the Guest brothers in THE LONG RIDERS, later portrayed director Sam Fuller with Marine veteran Lee Marvin in the WWII classic, THE BIG RED ONE, and was on hand to witness western film lover, icon, and producer star Tom Selleck make a necessarily quick decision during the making of MONTE WALSH.
In this special episode of A WORD ON WESTERNS, combining interviews done with Rob Word at The Autry Museum in May 2016 and May 2019, Robert Carradine shares behind the scenes stories of working with these legends and more. It doesn't get any better than this!
John Wayne revisited classic movie RED RIVER territory in 1972 with another cattle drive movie, THE COWBOYS. Duke’s character is about to start moving the herd when his drovers quit to go hunt for gold and he’s left with a group of very young boys for the drive. The film veers from adolescent pranks to a violent rite of passage for the boys.
For the young actors, many of them Jr Rodeo champions, the film was a wonderful opportunity to see and learn from the talented cast and crew. Find out how Bobby was cast, why he took the role, and what he learned on location and how emotional the death of John Wayne’s character was for them.
Robert Carradine may be best known for his starring role as Lewis in REVENGE OF THE NERDS (and its sequels and TV series spinoff) and the father in Disney's LIZZIE McGUIRE franchise, but his western film credits are amazing.

I agree about John Carradine; what an actor! Prolific, versatile, inspiring, and evocative! Hollywood Royalty! All of The Carradines share these same, superlative skills! I have been a big fan of them all. Being just 5 years younger than Robert, I grew up enjoying David's "Kung Fu" show and performances, as did everyone else in the world. And, this year, I acquired David's "Shane" television show on DVD (great, all around). I again watched The Carradine's "blind father" episode of "Kung Fu," which I bought as a KZbin download (I now own the entire first season). I introduced a 30 year-old, family friend to the series, using that episode as my introduction/presentation. If you're reading this, Robert, let me just say, "I was in tears watching the three of you onscreen together! And what performances you gave! Wow! And what a powerful story/script! Thanks for the caliber of work you do, on our behalf! It's the best, and I wish more actors were like you and your family!" And "The Cowboys" has to be the in the top 10 Westerns of every 1950-60-born male. My guess is that The Duke, his stature and his affection, and the other, fine, older professionals onset, helped bring out the best in all of you "cowboys." Each one of you "Will Anderson Sons" delivered moving, memorable performances. So, that's for that, too, and share my remarks, with them, please, as a favor to me.

The LongRiders has long been my favorite western - the historical accuracy was a focus of the Keach Bros - James had this story in mind for several years before it all came together - Great stunts - great dialogue - Underappreciated work of art - I make my living with horses - I know a thing or two about what's the proper way and what you usually see in these productions - this is why Yellowstone is so highly regarded - Great video - thank you

Because of this interview, I went out and bought copies of "BILL TILGHMAN & THE OUTLAWS" and even though I saw "THE LONG RIDERS" before, I also bought a copy of it. I loved the "BILL TIGHMAN" movie. Johnny Crawford was a welcome sight as were Darby Hinton, Don Collier & others. It was well done and very enjoyable. Thanks again!

THE COWBOYS... They certainly don't make westerns like that anymore with great script, casting and directing! Robert Carradine was in the very best company any young actor starting out could ever wish for, with all that and cinematography by the great Academy Award winning Robert Surtees (BEN HUR, MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY, THE GRADUATE, THE STING), and music by the legandary John Williams who has won more awards than anyone in the business. Robert's best work was when he was young when the opportunities were there it seems. It's all about timing and that is determined by sheer luck usually. He has a good common sense attitude and I'm sure he was grateful for how it all turned out with some great memories of those days... and memories is what WOW is all about, right!

For all of Robert's comments about being star struck and shy during auditions and on set he has left that all in the rear view mirror. His calm demeanor and strong recall made this interview excellent. The punch line: "do you know your lines?" was great. Would love to see the updated The Big Red One. Needless to say his father John would be extremely proud of the Carradine family legacy overall.

We taped our last show there last month, Ms. Sorry you missed our 10 year tenure there. With an on stage cast of 19 and a packed theater, we did a tribute to writer/director Burt Kennedy with an exclusive staging of his recently discovered (by Kirk Ellis) western script, THE LADIES FROM LONESOME. We are editing it now for a 3-part presentation on A WORD ON WESTERNS beginning next Sunday. It was getting more and more difficult to book guests to appear during our 2-hour bi-monthly window at the Autry so I plan to continue doing interviews for the series but will be doing them on location or via zoom. I'm going to miss the audience!

Revenge of the nerds: The real Skolnik wrote the RADAR Handbook, and it is an excellent reference book on microwave RF systems. I have the first edition, and I used it to design replacement parts for satellite dishes. I would have loved to had it, when I did some RADAR work while I was in the US Army, 50 years ago.

Friends called John Wayne "Duke" (he was called Duke Morrison since a young boy) and those that were not friends incorrectly referred to him as "The Duke," often sarcastically. Notice how Robert Carradine referred to him as Duke except when he first met him or quoting Mark Rydell (no friend of John Wayne on or off movies).
