In another tweet he said that manufacturing humanoids at scale will be like manufacturing consumer electronics than cars, which means the price might eventually be closer to0 that. So exciting to see the technology and economics coming together so rapidly. Great job, Harbert and Dr. Walter!

Will be interesting to see who is right about robot tendons. I tend to agree with Brett that in an industrial environment, tendons may be more trouble than they are worth. They can stretch, jam, generate friction, fall off a pulley, etc., and they prevent you from easily swapping on a new hand when one breaks. I'll be curious to see Tesla's tendon driven hand to see why they went in that direction. Only big advantage is it makes the hand less bulky, but not sure that's very important. Figure's direct drive hand looks pretty compact.

the interview in a nutshell... 1. we need to get Figure doing the job that humans currently do 2.We need to learn how to scale, but we haven't started that learning yet 3. Scaling manufacturing is hard, we need to learn how to do that, the sooner we start learning that the better 4. Figure2 is so much better than Figure1 5. we need to learn how to remove cost, this can only be achieved with large scale manufacturing, see point 3 above 6. we need to learn how to remove complexity, which is a complex issue 7. We need to work out this inference chip issue as our current solution requires internet connection to NN/LLM Servers 8. We've got Microsoft and OpenAI working on our NN/LLM/Training stuff, we're focused on the hardware 9. We currently have one human operator per Figure robot at BMW, there's a lot of work to be done to get this commercially viable 10. We're moving into flash office space, I wanted to lease this space in my last startup but couldn't afford it, now we can, tick 11. We dont know how to engineer hands like Tesla, if we used tendons our hands wouldn't be reliable 12. Figure wont be as capable as Optimus as we cannot engineer hands to their level of capability 13. Our robots need to walk faster, as fast as a human, but thats really hard, we'll eventually get there or close to there 14. We need data, we dont have enough data 15. I think we have the best team in robotics and I think we can manufacture a commercial product, we want to make a lot of them, we want to win, we want to be the best. I can sum it up it one sentence...."I'm in over my head, Help!!!"

It’s pretty hard to imagine someone lapping Tesla with less than a Cortex on their side. First to reach scale? It’s pretty hard to imagine someone coming up with the needed resources to beat Tesla’s behemoth. But I suppose you do need to talk shade and morale boost your team before entering the arena. Only the actual results will tell, but it is all pretty obvious to me that when Tesla sets their sights on something, get out of their way. They’ll let you play in the same pond but stay in your end ha!

Since nothing is perfect, my only suggestion is: Please, don't do many of those videos (at least not so often) with Jeff Lutz, Larry Goldbert, and Nelson Hans, because they just “guess” or to say it more euphemistically, they provide “informed speculation” which in the end doesn’t help much, since I can also guess myself.
