The Z8 stopped all my camera GAS. Other than open gate, better video IBIS and maybe an A7RV style screen I don’t think there is anything that would masher me consider upgrading.

@@amermeleitor no, it cannot. But using CF Express Type B cards it’s not so necessary, I have the Lumix S5IIx and I hate having to rig it up just to record to an SSD.

CFB cards offer speeds up to 3000 MB/s sustain read which is good for getting off the card. And for write, up to 1500 MB/s gen three is fast enough for all video resolutions, and fast enough for most cameras as they are yet to be able to take advantage of gen 4 cards.

Canon, Sony and Lumix (Panasonic) all have extensive cine camera systems that sit above the stills/hybrid mirrorless market. Nikon bought RED, so wants their two product ranges to work well in their respective markets. Global shutter is the current big thing in improving picture quality for action photographers and filmmakers. Sony were first in full-frame hybrid mirrorless to have it. RED recently made a lot of noise about the global shutter on their flagship movie camera, so it’s not a big surprise to see inventory shifting at the top of the Nikon ranges in anticipation of global shutter models from Nikon. I think one needs to view the hybrid mirrorless market in parallel with the movie camera systems - they know many people will use full-frame hybrids where a movie camera once was, but they also know they can upsell other customers from hybrid into the high-end cine products.

Global shutter is becoming the new thing, but for most, it isn't ready for all scenarios yet. I believe RED has the best all purpose sensor that solves issues with dynamic range. Sony has just started and Canon is still researching. Looking forward to what happens over the next four years.

Happy New Year Simon. Interesting speculation, but at the moment I don't need a third or new Z 9 or a successor to my Z 7 II. For me it would be much more important if Nikon finally brought a few high-speed wide-angle lenses onto the market, such as the long-awaited one NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.2 S and preferably a NIKKOR Z 24mm f/1.2 S. That would be a real enrichment for me and my work. In my opinion, there are already enough cameras that can do what I need. Kind regards from Bonn, Germany

I don't know. Canon doesn't have that weird color cast on the whites that sometimes Nikon do. Easy to fix with a white balance change, but Canon most of the times deliver the whites perfectly fine.

@ it’s the blues that Canon fails on. They tend to be purply. I shoot volume sports teams. Blue jerseys are a nightmare with Canon and have cost me dearly. It’s been that way for two decades too. Canon, why?

@@scottrogers2831 maybe IR pollution? Some sensors have weak IR filters, like old Canons (the original 5D) or most Fuji cameras. Try a good IR filter in front of your lens. But it's possible that the problem is on the processing side. You know, the blues are always the most difficult color to deliver correctly for digital cameras.

@@scottrogers2831 I thought it was just me thinking Canon blues were odd, especially the ‘default’ sky blue shade, but because of market share since the 5D the ‘Canon look’ is kind of normal. I can go through e.g. flickr playing guess the sensor and be above 80% accurate between Canon, Pentax, Leica, Sony, Nikon, Olympus and Lumix (in that order). Favourites on colour are Pentax and Leica, least favourite Canon.

The Sony A1 MK 1 came out 2001, has 50% higher top frame rate than z9, higher MP and better dynamic range. Even the Canon R5 MK II shoots at 30 fps now at full res raw. For me personally, i would love to see a global shutter added, so i dont have to worry about high speed sync issues with my flashes and having to mess around with ND filters. I think common sense would bring 30 fps in RAW, and better auto focus to match Canon R1. I also think 45mp is the sweet spot, if they could stick to that size but increase dynamic range a little that would be awesome, and i love the fold out LCDs on the current top end cannon.along with the other updates. Just my 2 cents. Im a portrait and wedding photographer, so obviously have different requirements than some. As an general Nikon note, would love them to let third party companies like Sigma make their top end glass available on nikon Z, so i dont have to mess around with Sony adapters.

If Nikon improves the auto focus and low light performance, they'll have a winner. Auto focus in particular has been a rather large thorn in Nikon's side for quite some time, most notably in the Z6 line. I like Nikon, here's hoping they nail the Z9II and future revisions.

The AF is fast and precise enough. I got everything I wanted and needed for my job after the latest Firmware upgrades my Z9 and even more. Low light performance is great and has less grain than many other cameras and no shutter mechanism which can be destroyed over time.

The only thing that this camera would do for me is lower the price of the current Z8, which I can use in crop mode as a D500 replacement. They clearly believe that staunchly stamping their feet and refusing to give people a Z80/Z90 is propping up sales of Z8/Z9. Even if that is true, I think a true crop sensor flagship would easily make up the sales and profits, as it would probably 'just' be 1k less, but uses about 1/3 the total sensor area, and uses less memory, less processing power. I've been waiting ever since mirrorless came out, and I will keep waiting if I have to, and I think there are plenty of people like me.

A Z80/Z90 should be at a much better price point than the Z8. $1900-2200 USD, especially if they use a stacked or partially stacked version of the 20.9mp sensor. The price of a Z8 as a D500 replacement does not make sense. But if Nikon is going to do that camera it needs to carve its own space in the DX\APS-C market with a new sensor.

I hope they do come out with a 7iii that's what I want. If the 7 becomes the low end of the high end (high MP) models and follows a release cycle of 9, 8, 7 then I'm fine with that. IMO that would mean the 5, 6, and Zf should have a similar release cycle on the low end models then with the 5 next on the list in that respect. BUT, if they are going to do a new z9 it's got to have some RED tech in it so maybe 7iii is next then 9 then 8...

Hi Simon, releasing the Z9ii before the Z8ii seems a no-brainer, as long as both keep being as closely related as today. Their most obvious upgrade shall be increasing raw fps from 20 to 30, which is today jpg only. And they're likely to add some form of AI based AF chip. both upgrades are more related to the processor rather than sensor. I don't expect them to go global shutter just yet. The wording referring to the mark ii versions to squarely aimed at sports and wildlife seems slightly odd to me though. It did apply to the R5ii to some extend, because it sacrificed a tiny bit of high ISO DR in its aim for speed. But the R5ii kept better DR at high iso than this Nikon duo. Because this duo already has a fast stacked sensor, I don't see Nikon reduce its IQ further to reach higher speeds .. But maybe they'll stick to the exact same sensor, and the source was only referring to the cost of upgrading rather than a tradeoff in between specifications.

Z9ii will come out after 5 years from the original, nikon invested too much in z9 so they will want to keep it going for longer. They will release a couple of big fw updates untill Z9ii. They need to release the z7iii before. I hope it does come out

I own a Z9 and shoot a lot of wildlife. I have the 800 Z and even with that amount of reach I nearly always crop my images so 45 mp is really important to me. I would buy an upgraded Z9 if it had even better autofocus but not at a lower pixel count. A 24 mp Z9 ii will not be of interest to me. The Z9 autofocus is still excellent and rarely misses and has the pixel count I need for my birds in flight shots. I would buy a 45 mp improved Z9. To Nikon’s credit, they continue to improve their software.

Nikon Z9 came out in Dec 2021 and Z8 in May 2023 and they are still great cameras. Don’t think you can say even with your sources what a New Nikon will be our provide as so many were wrong about the Z9 initially. All camera manufacturers are making great cameras these days.
