This is the best Z8 and R5ii comparison I’ve seen on KZbin. Thanks for mentioning up front what you use, this was very objective and pointed out the strength’s and weaknesses of each. I think we’re all curious about the subject recognition improvements on the R5ii and how they compare but I’m not sure it’s possible to standardize a test of something like that as each will have different subjects it recognizes better so it’s tough to compare them without some massive test of many subjects which isn’t really feasible. I use a DJI mini and test all my cameras on a standardized flight path in Litchi app and that works well to test the regular AF-C hit rates as you can repeat the exact flight path and speed each time. The hit rate on the Z8 is quite high. Once again thanks for the work putting this together and I’ll definitely be back for your future reviews! Great work!

Thank you ~! I will say , I didnt want to make the video too long. We did the test live last week . One of the test was very basic, just me and a plain t shirt, no glasses or cap, Nikon was just a hair better on the AF. Once I wore my normal outfit, cap and glasses, Canon just don't recognize me as much. Just gives up. In fact it focus a lot on my mannequin. It was quite interesting. It just dont like folks who wear too much additional clothing that alters the face. Hopefully an update overhaul is near.

@@theCameraVille This is what people have noticed on the wildlife forums like Backcountry gallery where they're all using the flagships from the big three. It seems like depending on the dataset and training of the algorithm some are better at certain subjects than others but nobody has an overall advantage on everything. They'll probably just keep going back and forth with updates as they expand the subject detection datasets for each brand. When it works it's amazing but they still fail on certain things like you have found. Fortunately at least for my Z8 the non subject detect works really well, so as photographers we still have a job to do in learning our system and when to intervene. I noticed you use the Sigma 150-600 C and I still do as well, the lens is so much bang for the buck still amongst all the options.

The key reason to choose Nikon is lenses: - the native Z mount lenses are overall of higher quality, Nikon offers many long lenses not available in RF mount, in particular for high end shooters and the gap is likely to extend further if rumors are to be believed. The only 2 RF significant lenses not available at the moment in Z mount are the 28-70mm f2.0 (but this is an awkward zoom range) and 28-105mm f2.8 if you don't mind a 1.5kg normal zoom lens, - there are many more 3rd party lenses available for Z mount - it is possible to adapt any Sony FE mount lens to Z mount with excellent AF, meaning that all Sony lenses can be considered as Nikon lenses as well. This is tremendous value and will never be possible for Canon RF mount. Canon locks you in a narrow system with no significant advantage.

I shot a documentary on my Z8 where we sat people down for usually 2+ hours. One day it was 95 degrees in this room and I shot the whole interview without the red temp warning coming on. It only did the yellow temp warning. People think Canon's cooling accessories are a bonus when its actually a bandaid for their bad passive cooling design. The Nikon doesnt need menu options for fan speed or a cooling grip attachment cause the Z8 doesnt have bad cooling. Also, that exact same Tascam unit you showed has a Nikon version. Canon requires R5II shooters to buy new expensive batteries just to unlock 8K recording. Nikon allows 8K recording on batteries from 2014. The newer EN-EL15C have higher capacity than the regular EL15 or 15B but it just changes your maximum record time. I got 1h15m with a 10 year old battery and around 1h45 with the 15c that came with the camera. But that doesnt matter, cause I can power the camera via USB-C from any power bank, a wall charger, or v-mount indefinitely.
@theCameraVille3 ай бұрын
Your basically proving my point. Its all cabled to do the same things vs the Canon which you dont need much cabling to do a run and gun setup. Your referring to a fully rigged setup which most system will do fine in. As for the overheating, we had done several test already proving that Z8 overheats faster than Canon. Its not good to let your system run hot and it will introduce noise artifact down the road. A cooling unit should be involved with the Z8. This is why R5c is still in my setup because the Z8 needs to be overly rigged to just perform. R5c, turn it on and forget it. New Battery extends the usage and XLR needs no cable . Plug and play. Again, Nikon needs to get their accessories in line. Sony also have fan units built in the system and Xlr with no cable. My old 2018 GH5, same thing, no cable for xlr, just hot shoe. Its the simplicity where Nikon fails behind.

Yes but like new used z9 can be had for just a few hundred more than z8 from reputable after market sellers with 6 month warranty. So if one wants to buy into Nikon or just update to a z8/z9 level camera,there is almost no cost difference to obtain the benefits in the z9, assuming drawbacks don’t outweigh them for any given buyer. Always a new camera on the horizon so “new model coming soon” is questionable reason for choosing a camera. Particularly with steep discount on used z9, probably notably less loss of value than z8 if one wants to upgrade to z9 II whenever is actually does come out.

Wow, some of those results were quite surprising for me. I was expecting that the Nikon has a better sensor in terms of dynamic range than the Canon. However most people seem to praise Canons AF and say that it is maybe THE BEST. Since a few days I am an owner of an R5 II myself and have yet to do some testing myself. But it was interesting to me that you mentioned that Canon has issues to track someone that wears more than a shirt. I noticed that when I took pictures of my daughter with my old R5. When she was wearing a hat or cap the AF would recognize her eye but the focus really was on the front of the cap. The R5 was still the best experience I ever had with a camera and I assume the Mark II will be an improvement. As someone who only does photography as a hobby switching brands would not make any sense for me and even though others might be better the R5 II is a solid camera.

Hey~! I am so glad you also did this test. I also did this with my R5c and R6 . Yes, when it came to like caps ,hoodie, glasses and certain logos I was wearing, it threw the AF off. When I removed my hat and glasses in this test, the AF on the Canon was very neck to neck with Nikon. Once I put everything back on, I was shocked and now its in this video. So I dig a big deeper and I read this : www.usa.canon.com/newsroom/2024/20240515-dev-announcement?srsltid=AfmBOopRp6cDz9F6Plmd0fRShDYe1WE2DNs8T7Nsi8IhOcJ0DBhul78A The new generation AF for Canon starts with the R1. We might be still using more or less slightly better AF from the the first generation ( R5/R6 ). The new one should be more smarter. I am still keeping my R5II. Several years down the road I want to get into documentary film making. By that time I expect to see the full bloom on the rose in the Nikon-Red merger, so I see that as a form of future proofing for buying Nikon gear. Any 8K video I shoot in the meantime probably won't need the heat dissipation required for long recordings. I shot weddings way back in the analogue era. The actual ceremony itself was the longest the video was ever running at one time...they're over in much less time than the Z8 will take to heat up, especially in a climate controlled environment, & almost all of them are likely going to be shot in 4K anyway. The real estate market is my initial interest for now. Which of these two do you see as being a better option there? From what I saw, color accuracy & dynamic range probably come into play more for me, which means the Z8 is where I'm leaning. Would like your thoughts...

I would add that in my experience, we can't rely only on the back screen/EVF to be sure that the focus is right on spot. I've got several images there the focus point on the images is definitely not there the focus was. And even the latest firmware, the Nikon sometimes miss the eye and go to the eye lashes. On a static spec, you can see that Nikon has far less Focus Point than Canon, and Canon cover 100% of the sensor.

I assume you are comparing Raw files? You don't say what program you are using to process the Raws. I have tested Adobe vs Capture One and DPP, and at this time Adobe is significantly worse. I'm sure they will improve this like they did with the R5 files, but for now they look worse so I'd be interesting in knowing how they were processed. Also, for tracking I have found it too jumpy unless you change the tracking to a stickier setting. You said something about changing settings but didn't say which settings you changed to and to what for your test.

Many thanks for a very interesting and informative video. As a Canon shooter (5D IV) about to finally go mirrorless and get the R5 MkII, I’m quite shocked! Especially on the AF front after so many have raved about the R5 Mk II’s new AF. The shadow and highlight recovery is also disappointing. Photons to Photos report that the R5 Mk II, allegedly, has slightly better dynamic range than the Z8 (in both electronic and mechanical shutter). I’m certainly not disputing your results though. After watching your video I downloaded the sample (underexposed) RAW files from DPReview, and I do agree that in Lightroom the R5 Mk II does exhibit significantly more colour noise when exposure is raised by 4 stops and shadows + blacks are each raised by 100%. (Obviously a very aggressive push but it certainly demonstrated the point). I wonder though whether Adobe’s profiles for the Mk II might be a bit suspect. When I pushed the same image in Canon’s own RAW processor (DPP) they were markedly cleaner (albeit you can’t exactly replicate Adobe’s shadow and blacks adjustment in DPP).
@theCameraVille2 ай бұрын
You have to also read the triangle on photons to photons. People forget about that part. If its circle , its pure raw. If its triangle, its baked, not true raw anymore. Once you bake a file, always they tend to lose the dynamic range. It is also label above the chart and its small text. 2 years ago, the plan was to move full Canon from Nikon. Made a video on it. To keep pipeline for the channel more streamline. Then Nikon buys RED and seeing R5ii like this, Im a bit concern as to what I paid for exactly. Time will tell when firmware comes out. Untill then most folks are loving the precapture in raw when it comes to wildlife and clog2.

Your comparison videos are great. I especially like your buffer test method but the photo autofocus section for this and your other videos are incomplete without taking sequence of photos and checking the actual photos because the EVF/LCD tracking overlay and camera/lens autofocus are two separate processes. My Fuji's eye tracking overlay lags behind the actual camera focus so it would look like all the photos would be off-focus but most are in-focus after reviewing the photos.

Canon does a lot of things right with the R5 mark ii. It has most things wildlife photographers need. High 30fps, precapture Raw. Those two features alone also at the price is already unmatched but like every other camera, no one is perfect. The downfall for Canon for wildlife photography is their lens lineup. After 6 years of the RF mount, there are still no mid range telephoto primes. Nikon released at least three 400,600,800 all in a span of two years. Canon still only nothing in between. It is either the best primes or the low end primes or zooms.

Yup I mentioned the first part of your claim in the video. If you need the first burst of 30fps , then canon. If you need to shoot longer duration over 5 seconds, Nikon would be the better choice. @@jonassekondi931 Yea, its wild. So you need to won a R1 to hit 95% hit rate. Everything else was 45% he said. Ouch. www.canonrumors.com/canon-eos-r5-mark-ii-jerky-af-frame-issue-confirmed-by-canon/ Wild, no other youtuber even bother but my live show did catch this. Cheers

Nice video. The nikon has better image quality, low light, iso, dynamic range, and video. Canon does have better focusing on faster action shooting. But for most use cases they are equal. I have 8-9/10 images in focus. Which is great. The r52 just seems like a firmware update on the first r5. It's a bit weird honestly. More expensive, but not as good Happy z8 user ☺️

Yup, sort of my summary at the end. For most use cases in good lighting all perform more or less the same yup.

It's disappointing that after 4 years Canon got slightly worse photo quality.Ill keep my R5.

Yes, people said the DR is worse than previous on the R5ii. I do have a R5c to test this claim.

Is this a real test, or is the Nikon channel bashing Canon? This is one useless test. How can any normal person claim that Z8 tracks better than R5II? Please don't take this guy seriously. By the way, I shoot with Z8, R5, and Z6III.

I dont think anyone took you seriously after listing your camera gear list😂. Plus sad you dont keep up with the news. Canon already confirm AF issue. New Firmware update end of October. Where my apology fool.

@@theCameraVille It's common for camera makers to release firmware updates. I mentioned the cameras I've used to demonstrate that I'm not biased or fanboy to any camera maker. Your comparison seemed one-sided, so I couldn't continue listening to you. Even though my R5 has better auto-focus performance than the Z8, the Z8's auto-focus is so good that it doesn't matter anymore. With all the minor issues on Canon R5II af, it still outperforms Z8. Anything contrary to that is BS. I appreciate your effort, but next, try your best not to show your bias.

@@nigerian-nightmare How am I biased to Nikon when I have more Canons than yourself lol. Sounds like you dont understand your own thinking. No one should take you seriously because you just went wishy washy on your own Z8 and R5 from 2020? Sounds to me you have no clue on your stance. Maybe you dont know how to operate your camera. No worry. Here is an advice, go to school and take some classes kid. Someday you will grow up to be something . Thank me later

@@KreatorStudios No, you didnt leave a simple comment. You left a half baked comment. I was there to help you clarified your statement. So folks that read this know your intentions. You took it sour because I called you out on your studio which you failed to mentioned, which mind you, at the end of the video, I suggested your exact situation being in an AC control studio. Be specific because what you did was trying to make it look as if there is no issue. Not everyone is fortunate to have a studio like yours. Get it?

@@theCameraVille I shoot real estate in Florida. Run and Gun. 2-3 homes a day. The Z8 has replaced my Sony a7 iv as my main camera. Florida, is hot. That said, I don't run it for long periods of time when shooting video. A few minutes, maybe maxing at 10 min of nonstop recording for a given clip. I've don't need a cooler. Maybe I would if I was running it longer or was working 120f/s more. I appreciated the video because I've owned many Canon's and would have loved to have the r5 mk ii. But at this point I'm really happy with the Nikon. Truth be told, I like all of them and just wish I had the cash for it all. Good luck.
