Honestly, it’s really sad to hear Mr. Sergey Lavrov say that the Russian language is banned in Ukraine. Russian literature has been such a big part of my life-it’s literally shaped who I am. I still remember reading Patriotism-Ilya Ehrenburg and My First Teacher-Chinghiz Aitmatov in my Vietnamese literature textbooks as a kid. You're America? - what are you doing writing then if you're a large continent? Pardon the stupid messing about, but if you'll forgive me for saying so, but it's always a good idea to check what you've written before posting. There are so many people who don't on this platform - and every other one, I'll be bound. However there are an awful lot of people on this site - you don't appear to be one of them, but your comment appears below many of them (some of whom I can't get to as replies have been closed off up at the top - so I thought I'd post this where some of them might see my comment) who appear not to know how this conflict started and who is to blame. That, for your information and, perhaps, education, is America, or one or more of its' presidents and top brass, perhaps, who wanted to put military bases on Ukrainian soil and so to have ballistic missiles (including, it is said, nuclear missiles) 5 minutes flight time from Moscow. What has happened is that the American Gov.t - or it's supposed servants - put Putin in a position where he would have to take action, having ordered the CIA, probably, to blow up the nordstream pipeline, which Biden, in his early Alzheimic manner had already hinted they would do - but which he still thought would never be blamed on the obvious perpetrator of the crime - how maladroit can you get? And the powers that were thought they could weaken Putin and Russia with this war - the opposite of which has happened in reality. After nearly 30 years of breaking promises made to Gorbachev himself in 1990 when James Baker the 3rd (the secretary of state)of the US said that if he allowed German Unification ( thus ending WW2 legally) Nato would not move one inch to the East. Gorbachev did, and dissolved the warsaw Pact following that. In 1994 Bill Clinton reneged on that promise. Five years later, Hungary, Poland and Csechoslovakia joined Nato etc. etc. Thirty years later, after Nato had continually broken its' promise (which your Professor Jeffrey Sachs had been in the room to hear, btw - if you seek confirmation of this and more I suggest you watch a video - js: understanding the ukraine conflict {minidoc}) and had, several times, enlarged Nato by the addition of a number in the large teens of countries - the Gov.t of the US (perhaps Barak Obama and / or Joe Biden) had, in the meantime, decided that it wished to put deadly weapons within minutes of flight time of the political heart of Russia - having, incidentally, arranged the overthrow of President Yanukovych of Ukraine in 2014 (which America was, allegedly plotting for up to six years previously) and which began an undeclared civil war costing about 14,000 lives, almost entirely of Russian speaking Ukrainians I understand, between 2014 and 2022. The US had, allegedly, briefed France and Germany to sign the Minsk Accords, not because Nato intended to observe them, but merely to buy time whilst Ukrainian soldiers were trained in various Nato countries, and the US and various European countries (including my own - Britain) sold them weapons - some new, and some outdated, which our/your governments / military were glad to get off their hands, the only winner in all this being the Industrial military complexes of the west. As I said previously, an undeclared civil war had been going on in Ukraine since 2014 - Crimea, and Donetsk & Lughansk all asked for help from Putin, and for a while he responsibly refused their requests - waiting till matters got so bad that he had to act to protect them - first in Crimea, then in 2022 , a 'special military operation' - which was an honest description at the time - Ukrainians had a long, intertwined history with Russia, and all the peoples involved were Slavs, so Putin was not being economical with the truth when he described it in those terms- at their start they were taking every precaution to kill as few Ukrainians as possible - and they have been much more restrained in their conduct of this war altogether - unlike their opposition or, for instance, being much more restrained than Israel has been in any part of the Middle East / Western Asia where it has waged wars, ever. However, in 2022 in Donetsk and Lughansk, this became a war - widening, as a result of US intervention, i.e. sending Boris Johnson to be Biden's messenger to stop peace negotiations in Istanbul in March /April 2022 and re-start this ill-conceived conlict. As a result, what has also happened is that Ukraine, which has probably, in reality, cost the lives of at least about half a million soldiers and civilians and possibly more, with a million or more emigrating, it is thought, never to return; and Biden, and his also sick advisors, have got themselves a proxy war which they can't win. When will America learn? - your governments have been doing this since at least Vietnam - if not Korea - and although there have been some governmental overthrows and coups of various sorts, many of them are unwinnable wars, from which your military have to withdraw, tail between legs - and then the government tries to never speak about it again - pretend it hasn't happened. 'Remember Afghanistan?. This is just one more proxy war, which Nato (& your country in particular) can't win - we''ve already lost it - Biden's advisors are just trying to hold out till Trump is inaugurated - then they'll try and blame him for ending the war, if they can. The events of the past few weeks, and in particular the last twenty four hours in Syria only serve to make me more supicious of what the US, under the aegis of Biden's advisors, may have been, and is, up to. This is nothing new - this is what failing empires do. We (in Britain) - or, rather, our ancestors, - did it, stupidly, to get ourselves, arrogantly, into WW1, and because of the failure of our (Tory) politicians to prevent WW2. The Roman empire also got into wars it couldn't win, and picked the wrong fights, when it was in decline. Wake up America !!! - you are losing your hegemonic power.Your politicians are mostly corrupt and venal; bought and paid for by foreign powers. They, as have ours in imitation, in the last 4 or 5 decades, wound down your manufacturing industries and outsourced it to countries, one in particular which you now consider to be your competitor(s) - and your politicians mendaciously try to demonise as mortal enemies, which is nonsense - they just don't like fair competition. And, for that reason, as well as others, countries are joining BRICS, because there they get treated with more respect and consideration, not with threats, or tariffs, or sanctions being used illicitly, or, even worse, and appallingly cynically, being used to fight your proxy wars for you, as Ukraine is reallising it has been, and how little a country that pretended to have its' back actually cares about them, to the country's possibly mortal, cost; it could welll end up a rump state. That is something for which large parts of the US government should be held to account, imo, and a number of people should be appropriately punished. But I doubt they will - they have unaccountability! Whilst talking about that, I think that the ability of the US President to be able to pardon cronies, colleagues, or even family members is also something that I find appalling. When Gerald Ford pardoned President Nixon I thought it a travesty of justice; I also find it so when Biden is allowed to pardon his son; just think what message that sends to all sorts of people - especially poor people of colour who may have got mixed up in the same nonsense that Hunter found himself in, but who are paying a far greater price than that privileged .... person will do. To return, briefly to the international topic however: As Kissinger said, decades ago, " To be an enemy of the united States is dangerous - To be an ally is lethal"!. Even Zelensky seems to be waking up to the fact now - having enriched himself greatly by selling his country down the river; if he can escape the ire of the Azov neo-nazis I expect he'll be off to his Florida mansion shortly. What a wonderful world we live in - Merry Xmas everybody! Santa has arrived - at least for the Hunters (or something like that) of this world. However, for a modicum of hope I would refer anyone who hasn't watched it to Scott Ritter's panel of six speakers at the No Nuclear war: a call for reason [live Event] at the National Press Club that was live streamed yesterday (7th December '24) on this platform).
