This is gonna be a long comment, but it is needed after the drivel of Carlson, and the ignorance festering in the comment section. 1) The reason NATO got involved: In 1998, the Kosovo war started between the UÇK (Albanian army of Kosovo) and Serb paramilitary forces. For about a year and a half, the Albanian population of Kosovo (which at the time was already over 80% albanian) suffered a brutal repression. During the course of the war, around 9,000 albanian civilians lost their lives, and 850,000 albanians were forcefully expelled from Kosovo. As a result of this humanitarian crisis, NATO carried out a bombing campaign targeting military and media infrastructure. Unfortunately, civilians lost their lives, including many albanians. The NATO bombings were carried out after a year long conflict, where the majority of all casualties were on civilians, and 90% of the civilian losses were on Albanian civilians. 2) The Kosovo war was NOT a religious war. Tucker Carlson mentuomed the bombing of Christians to sensationalise the issue and use islamaphobia to turn the people against Albanians. Historically, Albanians are a people who place religion of secondary importance. During the Ottoman period, many Albanians converted to Islam due to oppression, however many also did not. To stick to the modern history, the UÇK had many Christian and also female soldiers, and contrary to what Serbs or other anti-Albanian people say, there was no Al-Quaeda in Kosovo. Muhjahadeen were a tiny minority of the KLA, let alone terrorist groups, in which no evidence of their presence in Kosovo is found. Once again i reiterate that the war in Kosovo war not a religious war but an ethnic one. Albanian culture is very unique and is always put above religion. 3) Historical context of Kosovo Many people in the comments have mentioned Kosovo is Serbia and an integral part of Serbia. But lets dive in to the status of Kosovo throughout history. 21st century- Kosovo newly independent from Serbia 20th century - Kosovo conquered during the Balkan Wars by Serbia from the Ottomans (a campaign seeing a huge ethnic cleansing campaign against Albanians) 19th to 15th century - Ottoman empire 14th and 13th century - Serbian empire 12th and 11th century - Byzantine empire 10th and 9th century - Bulgarian empire 8th and 7th century - Slavic migration to the balkans 7th to 1st century - Part of the Roman/Byzantine empires Before the birth of Christ Kosovo was under Illyrian control, specifically in the Kingdom of Dardania. Dardania is an Albanian name meaning 'land of pears' and the name Kosovo was applied when Slavs consolidated control over the region. Albanians as a people represent the continuation of Illyrian culture and language, with Albanian being one of the few Indo-European language isolates and one of two surviving Paleo-Balkanic (amcient Balkan) languages, alongside Greek. It is not a coincidence, that a people who are closely linked to ancient settlers of the land of Kosovo are genetically, linguistically and culturally similar to each other. Serbs are a slavic ethnic group and therefore cannot be the true natives to Kosovo. Piers Morgan did a poor job at defending the argument for Kosovo. However, we should not treat Kosovo as just another pro-America viewpoint. Each country has a different history, and the history of Kosovo is a tumultuous one. Every significant empire during the ages has had control over it, even Soviets and Germans, Italians etc. However, the land belongs to the people living there, and today 95% of the population is Albanian. Albanians had historically been persecuted by the Serbian state and army. In 1877 around 200,000 Albanians were expelled from the Nish sandjak of the Ottoman empire by Serb forces. In 1912, tens of thousands of Albanians were massacred by Serbs in the Balkan wars. From this point until the 50s there was a colonisation of Kosovo, settling Serbs into the region and expelling Albanians from Yugoslav territories (large reason why there are millions of Turkish people with Albanian origins from Kosovo and North Macedonia). Then in the 90s another attempted genocide arose after Albanians rebelled against a government that removed their autonomy, banned their language and fired Albanians from many important jobs in Kosovo. What Tucker Carlson has done to such a complicated discussion is turn into a black and white 'Christian vs Muslim' and 'NATO vs Russia' debate. In which his narrative is to make the aggressor state seem like a victim state. If you look into the historical context of Kosovo and its history, Albanians were simply defending their homes from Serbs throughout, and this narrative Carlson pushes goes against the true story. Carlson is right about lots of things, but Kosovo is not one of them. NATO never forced Kosovo to become independent but placed under UN control. It was Albanians who declared independence, in which the UN International Court of Justice declared the independence not illegal. The topic is a political one, not a legal one. If anyone wants to have discussions feel free to reply. I am willing to engage in conversation with anyone curious and unprejudiced towards Kosovo
