Best ever stretch for clavicular band of scm! This stretch is for the clavicular band of the scm. It is much easier to stretch the sternal band-just turn your head toward the side you want to stretch, breathe in and hold breath for 6 seconds, breathe out, wait 3 seconds, then rotate the turn a little farther. I tried many videos on how to stretch the clavicular band of the scm, and this one actually feels like it works. There are a lot of steps and you need to make sure you are getting everything correct. Watch his chin as he shows the steps, and see where it points and how close it is to the ground at the various steps. That helped me. When doing the tapping, don’t just rotate closer to the ground, but also, at the same time you rotate more, extend the neck back more. Once you are in the maximal stretch, push your feet into the ground and you can enhance the stretch. Also, if stretching right scm, make sure right shoulder is on the floor and push right hand, palm up, along the floor toward your right foot. That maxes out the stretch. Stick with it. This is a quality video and I am extremely grateful for it. I am dealing with scm syndrome with symptoms of throat pain while swallowing, left eyelid twitch, and tenderness above left eye. One publication said that it is the trigger points in the clavicular band that cause the throat pain, and another said that is was the trigger points in the sternal band. The picture shown at the 6 second point of this video is extremely valuable if you are trying to figure out how to massage the trigger points in the clavicular band. It’s easy to find the rope-like sternal band, and many videos just focus on that. Look at the picture mentioned and you can see the clavicular band behind the sternal band. To massage the clavicular band of the scm on your right side, turn your head to the left to make the right sternal band pop out. Then take the index and middle finger of your right hand and push the pads of the fingers along the edge of the rope like sternal band. Turn your head back to point straight ahead. Your two fingertips will then be pressing into the clavicular band. Hope that helps. Thanks for a great video. If you are suffering from overactive scm, do like he says and fix your posture, avoid looking down at your phone, especially to one side, and avoid engaging the scm while sleeping. Stomach sleepers are prone to scm problems due to the turning of the head. Bob and Brad have some good KZbin videos on sleep positions that may be helpful.

Great video. Matthew, my symptoms are the same as yours, ie ear, eye and throat problems. How are you now? I’ve been suffering with this for 2 years due to incorrect diagnosis several times. It is truly horrible. I have also watched other specialists who say that tightness/pain is due to weakness of the clavicular portion of the SCM (most commonly) and so strengthening is recommended - not stretching or massage (which can make it worse). So I’m a bit confused about whether to stretch or strengthen or both. A physio has tested all my neck muscles and said my strength is ok. My posture is also pretty good but I have been doing a lot of posture work anyway, but my problem persists. Any insight into this would be appreciated!

@richardthydeartist Жыл бұрын
Hi Oliver, your explanation is very logical. I’ve suffered with left SCM issues (not right) for over 2 years and this really hits the spot. I think it’s the clavicular head that is the problem. How many times a week should you do this stretch? It exacerbates my symptoms which I presume is to be expected? But should I do it maybe every 2 or 3 days then move to every day? I just hope the pain symptoms will eventually lessen! I’m an athlete (runner, cyclist, weight training) so I can’t believe my SCMs are weak, as you say, they are just being asked to do too much. My posture is not too bad but I have been working on it. Thank you for providing this video. This condition has been the hardest thing I’ve ever had to deal with and I hope this will give me a way to get my fitness back.
@OlivierGirard Жыл бұрын
Hey Richard! If the exercise exacerbates your condition, I wouldn't necessarily start with that. The reason is that SCM pain is the consequence of a long chain of events. Hence, my advice is that you take the long but authentic road and fix the causes rather than the symptoms. Here is how to keep yourself busy for the next 8 weeks: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b5KYqJ6Co8loaqs 😅

Hi Olivier Thanks for posting this. I'm a Carpenter to trade and have suffered with a tight SCM for over 9 years.. I've tried all different types of stretches but can't shift it.. I always feel like I need to pop my ear as the muscle tightens and puts pressure on my ear ..Its a horrible feeling.. I'm going to try this fir a few days and see how I get on. Many thanks Andrew
@d.devries48072 жыл бұрын
Sir, i would recommend you to not try it for a few days. But rather a few months or even years to really see the difference! Not only this stretch but every other one as well. As you said "Carpenter for over 9 years", so you cant expect 9 years to be gone in just a few days. Wish you the best!

How many times a day can this be done
@OlivierGirard2 жыл бұрын
I often say: if you need to do this more than twice per day, it surely means that there's something you feed with your habits. If so, you should work on forward head posture; my full 8-week protocol is here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b5KYqJ6Co8loaqs
