12 years old and watching you bound through the wet streets of Munich started my less than noteable 25 year running career Frank. Running in the cold, rain, snow and heat taught me so much about me. Thank you for being a Great example Frank. Truly something to be proud of.

Many years ago Shorter was in Hawaii doing promotional work for the Honolulu Marathon. As part of his duties he participated (not ran) in the race. There is a picture of my friend John 10 feet behind Shorter very close to the finishing line. John being a man of character did not even attempt to pass him, so he could say I beat Frank Shorter in a marathon. I'm Canadian but I still remember the excitement of seeing him win the GOLD. Rumor has it he had two litres of German beer the night before the race.

That’s no rumour. He did drink beer the night before. I’m sure it was no spur-of-the-minute decision. I’m sure that was a planned part of Frank’s preparation and that he had tried it out in training and other races before doing it at the Olympics.
