Shorter called it by mentioning Carlos Lopes as a dark horse! I remember watching the '84 Olympic Marathon as a kid, with Lopes putting everyone away with about 3 miles to go as the favorites (Deek, Seko, Salazar) folded in the L.A. heat.

we at Ima Sportsphile really appreciate when a viewer of one of the 1700 vintage videos we have posted on our site is so knowledgeable about the event featured in one of our videos....so thanks for your comment and knowledge....as our Bone Daddy was there in L A for the Games....and the L A heat was significant. FYI, our Bone Daddy set a fan record at the L A Games that can never be broken...just tied...as he saw a live event in all 26 sports competed at the '84 Olympics.

Yes, you could be forgiven for overlooking Carlos Lopes because he was quite new to the marathon, despite his 1976 silver medal in the 10000m and multiple cross-country titles, this was only his second marathon that he completed. Pratically only he and his coach knew just how in perfect form and well-prepared for the heat he was to win it. Nice to see that Frank Shorter was aware that Lopes could pull it.

WHAT DID HE MEAN OR IMPLY BY SAYING A BLACK HORSE?

@@Hever73 , the woman asked him if he could predict a “dark” horse to win. “Dark horse” is an English idiom for an unforeseen winner.

With this win Shorter not only jumpstarted the running boom but marathons started popping up all over the place.

Should be a two-time champion, but the East Germans doped it up.

I think so too. Don't think he was quite the same after that, as he was pretty much invincible before the '76 marathon. East German did cheat.

He is a 2 TIME champ ! It's known, documented FACT Cierpinski systematically doped. Don't need Olympic games, burying entire history of cheating & corruption in games, for their own money & power, to know dopers aren't the winners.

That might be why the East German girls won 12 of 14 Gold medals (I think) in swimming. Or I could be wrong.

Who was this guy actually running into the stadium long after Frank did?
@straycatttt2766
@straycatttt2766 2 жыл бұрын
Karel Lismont of Belgium ran into the stadium after Frank to win the silver medal. This video did not show Lismont. If you meant who ran into the stadium BEFORE Frank, West German student Norbert Sudhaus was the track imposter to enter from the crowd onto the race track fraudulently and enter the stadium before Frank arrived.

Prime Star, thanks for your comment....for regretfully there have been a large number of "dopers" in the universe of sports throughout the years....as I have written several "dog commentary" pieces on the subject of doping at www.imasportsphile.com ....cuz in this lil ole chiweenie Sportsphile's opinion, the finger of guilt has throughout history in sports been pointed at the athlete instead of at the MONEY behind the sport.....for these folks have a vested interest in the performance of their athletes.

Imasportsphile III It has not been unanimously accepted that Waldemar Cierpenski was truly a blood doper, but has been proven the East Germany and the Soviet Union participated in state sponsored blood doping.

McDonalds offered a game where you'd get a free Quarter Pounder With Cheese if the America athlete on your game piece won the Gold. But the USSR had boycotted the games that year, so USA athletes won all the Golds. While USA Olympians were celebrated as the top physical competitors in the world, American consumers were eating more fast food than ever in their lives.

After posting 2000 vintage videos like this one on our webpage at ImaSportsphile, we can honestly say that Shorter's prediction is just another in a long line of broadcaster predictions....that's why there are never any guarantees....especially at the Olympics.
