The Woman Who Joined the Taliban tells the story of Beverley Giesbrecht, a Canadian Muslim convert who saw herself as a bridge between two warring cultures. Giesbrecht was a successful Canadian publishing executive and devout Christian living near Vancouver, before the events of September 11th 2001 changed her life forever.
After converting to Islam, Beverley Giesbrecht (also known as Khadija Abdul Qahaar) launched a website with the intention of presenting an alternate view of militant Islam. As a journalist, she travelled to a very dangerous place, the Taliban-controlled mountains of Pakistan, to make a first-person documentary. Within seven months, Giesbrecht was on a path that would lead to her kidnapping and disappearance in the Taliban heartlands.
Produced by Vanessa Dylyn and Matter of Fact Media, this documentary sets out to investigate the strange circumstances surrounding Beverley Giesbrecht's kidnapping amidst Islamic fundamentalism, shifting allegiances and political intrigue in the lawless tribal territories on the border of Pakistan and Afghanistan.
With exclusive access to the video footage shot by Giesbrecht herself, this mesmerizing documentary follows her journey into the heart of the Taliban, and her transformation from an admirer and defender of jihadist Islamism to disillusionment, until her final betrayal by her Taliban protector.
