You captured why I like Poppy. You never know what she will do, but she does it well. And she is well aware that she is weird. By the way, Poppy is a hologram who predates AI deepfakes. She is also the real thing, whatever that means. She's also a deity in certain obscure religions.

There's lot of people she worked with behind the scenes. Two big ones with the first one being the most relevant to your question but the second one needing to be acknowledged because baggage needs to be unpacked for the devil to get his due. Chris Greatti is the best answer to your question on who the mastermind of the instrumental sound is on this album. He's been around since the very beginning and only recently hasn't been working on new stuff. Concrete musically is mostly him, as anything track on the I Disagree album. Usually he has writer, producer credits but on this song it specifically lists him on all the instruments except drums and backing vocals too. He made an instagram post suggesting he did most everything but Poppy's vocals and drums on that album, which is not disputed. As a quick aside, Don't Go Outside is almost seemed prophetic since that album dropped right before crap went south in January 2020. He is supposedly still a close friend of Poppy and there are other artists he worked with of note like YUNGBLOOD and WILLOW. His band Blame Candy were the backing band for Poppy for a while until you hit the I Disagree tour. All of those guys can be credited too. He also worked on Flux which was 2021 after I Disagree. He is a very good guitarist and musician in general. The most publically controversial and hated one is Titanic Sinclair from the prior Mars Argo project with Brittany Sheets who just more recently a couple tracks after years of lawsuit drama. Poppy got caught up in that and ditched the guy for similar fallout reasons as Brittany Sheets. While not metal, Mars Argo has some really interesting music too. I Can Only Be Me is the latest with a childhood VHS tape music video that reminded me of Mockingbird by Eminem. I'd actually recommend that to you as something different because it oozes with style. A lot of that weird, kinda creepy atmosphere Poppy has is Titanic Sinclair repeating a a style motive from the past and Poppy's interpretation being the filter that makes it different. The weird videos(not music related) with white backgrounds are very noticeably Titanic Sinclair's style. You can even see that on Blame Candy's videos. While most Poppy/Mars Argo fans view the guy as scum, he was an influence on Poppy's direction and musical tastes. He has song credits on Poppy's work from very early on(Lowlife) to the I Disagree album released right before the virus and reaction to it ruined everyone's lives. And he directed the music videos for 4 years. Poppy tends to write the lyrics to all her songs but you'll see writer, director, and producer for him on a lot of stuff. Most of his influence is stylistic rather than substance when it comes to his contributions to Poppy. It's not to say he doesn't have music writing talent but that stuff is mostly showcased on his own albums where as he is more a support role elsewhere. She was probably bouncing ideas off him a lot because Mars Argo was a success and he had more experience with what worked and how to market in a quirky way. Lowlife which is one of Poppy's early successes has all that weird Illuminati crap in the video that was definitely his idea. Say what you will. The guy knows how to get attention and keep interest for the people he works with and he knows how to pick talent.

As someone already mentioned: You: "What genre is this, specifically?" Poppy: "Yes." If you're looking for what to check out next from her, "I Disagree" is probably her more straight forward song, and is incredibly catchy. I also dig "Fill the Crown" for more weirdness.

I loved this era of Poppy. I'm not so into what she's done more recently, but she is still very interesting. Not Bjork interesting, but still pretty interesting. Calling it avant-garde might be a bit pretentious, but I'm not sure what else to say about it? It's wild stuff, no matter how you slice it!

Poppy is a delightfully quirky artist. Very creative, and explorative. I like just not being sure what's going to happen next. Her latest album isn't as schizophrenic, she leaned more into her dance background. Check out the lead single, "Church Outfit".

Listen to the whole album and this song will make more sense to you. This song is like an unfinished picture just before it is obvious what the final picture will look like. It's almost like a Rorschach test. It is preview of where the album is going in genre changes and in themes even its not clear. This is the album opener. Then on the second song its like the picture is started over from point one and ultimately becomes blatantl by Sick of the Sun what the picture is. Then the last track is revealing how its all connected so that's perfectly coherent. Of course, if you are observant you get it early on. Once you see the whole thing, you start the album from the start and see this song for what it is. Brilliant, obscured foreshadowing of everything the album will go into and the lyrics of this song make perfect sense once you have the context to understand them.

Love bands like this that combine a heavy riff filling with a sugary pop icing. The Birthday Massacre and Baby Metal are other bands that I love that do this (same initials). Poppy has a kind of produced vibe similar to Baby Metal with the band pushed back to the background and wearing masks.

Some of it i feel is there are potentially more groups/artists that want to stand out and do their own thing instead of kinda just falling into "oh they're this genre", they become their own, i say it for bands like Jiner, Spiritbox, Twelve Foot Ninja, they dont fall into any genre but their own. Spiritbox makes Spiritbox, Poppy makes Poppy, etc lol

Im a fan of conflict and contrast in art. I like when it blends to either make something distinct or both elements stay distinct but elevate each other wifh the way they interplay. This, this is a patchwork quilt. And im not a fan of patchwork to begin with. So this doesnt appeal to me. Even when it comes to DJs, i prefer the dancing blends and layering over shifts. Even if its sewn together nice and small with skilled stitches.

While I appreciate the talent it requires to be able to succeed in multiple genres, for me personally, this song is an example of "just because you can, doesn't mean you should." It lacks cohesiveness, and the transitions between the genres are pretty much non-existent. It left me feeling like I just flipped through 20 channels on the TV.

It makes so much more sense on the album. Concrete is the first song and it previews every genre on the album and the entire journey the album takes. It is foreshadowing an entire album's rollercoaster ride in a single song. It's easy to miss the song's meaning with all the chaotic change up. The picture it paints is incomplete. The last song Don't Go Outside ends with musical callbacks to all of the songs released as singles on the album. Concrete sets your expectation to this isn't an album of one genre but an album that explores many while giving you the themes in an unclear form. Don't Go Outside is the recap bringing it all together and making it all make sense. When you start it over on the loop its like the unfinished picture in the first song has extra lines that you can no longer unsee because you've seen the finished picture and know order comes to the chaos. The middle songs might mix two genres or stick to one for the song, but their only similarity is lyrical theme and the torrent of ups and downs. The feeling of being trapped and controlled by other people, down on yourself, and the realization of why through moments of self discovery and clarity like Nothing I Need. The last two tracks are where the album's build up shines. Sick of the Sun explains everything before as a blatant theme reveal in case you didn't understand the album was about anxiety and depression and Don't Go Outside shows you the dots connecting so you understand the entire album is all related to the same thing even as it sounds completely different.
