As someone who grew up in SW Missouri I can tell you, this character is just a combination of so many real life people. David is from MO too and you'll find guys like this in every diner, truck stop, auto garage, tavern, Wal Mart, etc...

My dad was born and raised in Missouri. This character is a dead ringer for him during my childhood in the late70s-early80s. Wardrobe, accent & hairline are all spot on. And you could indeed find him at the tavern. Man, I miss that dude.

It's awfully annoying that as the seasons progressed, more and more cast members were consistently corpsing. Sandler was bad, but Jimmy Fallen was the worst and I think he sorta normalized it.

I don't know why people bitch about this era of SNL ('95--'01); this was the new cast that included Will Ferrell, Darrell Hammond, Molly Shannon, Cheri Oteri, this guy (Bill Koechner), Tracy Morgan, Chris Kattan, Nancy Walls (Michael Scott's gf in The Office). There were many sketches as good as this, recurring characters. People just line up to sh*t on something because everyone else is doing it. Maybe look-before-you-sh*t next time, you'll find something of value.
