UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell is delivering a major speech this Friday (2 Feb) in Baku, Azerbaijan, previewing the key issues and actions needed in the crucial periods ahead, building on progress at COP28 in Dubai.

The UNFCCC secretariat (UN Climate Change) is the United Nations entity tasked with supporting the global response to the threat of climate change. UNFCCC stands for United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The Convention has near universal membership (198 Parties) and is the parent treaty of the 2015 Paris Agreement. The main aim of the Paris Agreement is to keep the global average temperature rise this century as close as possible to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The UNFCCC is also the parent treaty of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. The ultimate objective of all three agreements under the UNFCCC is to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that will prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system, in a time frame which allows ecosystems to adapt naturally and enables sustainable development.

I noticed a very interesting difference in attitude between participants from COP28 and DAVOS 2024. At the climate COPs it's about stalling climate action & making oil deals. DAVOS is about acknowleging the devastating impact the climate crisis (linked to the ecological & biodiversity crisis) will have on the economy and quality of life! Please hold all climate COPs AFTER DAVOS, not before! Also very little focus on the climate crisis & cities. The UN estimatef that around 80% of people will live in cities by 2050'ish - many climate & other solutions MUST come from within cities. Many mega-cities will be located in Africa & Asia. You want migration to the West to be sustainable? Then help ensure that these cities become sustainable, compact, integrated, inclusive, safe, green, gender- sensitive, child- friendly, climate- ready & resilient. Modern clean tech can also help rural communities live a good quality of life. Make sure they get access to it. All our fortunes are tied together. Want a safe & secure future? Give it to everyone!

Very interesting, go after the people with no criminal record, nor a footprint of hazard. I wish I knew before I worked hard as a brown skin single mom of 4 to raise my children under the law "best interest for the children" by obeying the International laws and hand making for our home what we could not afford.
