@@FlipsidebyLanaDelRey *[Tl;dr We fans are biased, not the announcers.]* I’m a Mets fan, but I’m sorry, I have to be blunt: these “omg -their- there so biaised!!1!” takes-from both Mets and Phillies fans, who similarly believe that the broadcast was in the tank for the Mets-are whiny, petulant, and wrong. News Flash: we fans are the ones who are biased, not the announcers. AJ Pierzynski has been saying that they’re probably doing a good job, because both fan bases hate them, and he has a great point. Fans of all teams are so used to hearing their own local broadcasts, which actually ARE biased (maybe more so than ever), so they have no perspective about what a truly unbiased broadcast actually sounds like. And it’s only gotten worse in recent years, because a) there are more postseason series for people to whine about, and b) we all increasingly live in our own media bubbles, where we hear and see only what we want to, and we perceive anything else as “bias.” There’s also our own cognitive bias: Phillies fans get riled up by anything that sounds “pro-Mets,” and ignore anything that’s “pro-Phillies,” and we do the inverse-getting mad when they talk about what the Phillies need to do in a given situation, and completely ignoring when they talk about what the Mets need to do. It’s just human psychology. They weren’t biased toward the Phillies or the Mets; they were “biased” toward having an exciting series that went the distance. They’re not trying to cater to Mets or Phillies fans, because we were all going to watch no matter what. They’re trying to capture the interest of people who don’t have a rooting interest, a group that includes casual fans, some of whom only watch baseball during the postseason. (I can already picture the crying “Noooooo!!!” meme as I type this. 🤦🏽♂️)
@FlipsidebyLanaDelRey3 ай бұрын
@@IdliAmin_TheLastKingofSambar In every single game, they were getting extremely excited about any play in favor of the Phillies, being extremely less talkative for the Mets. I’m not even that salty about it, it’s just annoying to me that the National broadcast, which is what I had to watch, only ever talked about the Phillies and their plays and what they had to do, etc. They talked more about a single for the Phillies than Lindor’s grand slam.
@IdliAmin_TheLastKingofSambar3 ай бұрын
@@FlipsidebyLanaDelRey How are you gauging how “excited” they sounded for the Phillies versus the Mets? What’s your measuring stick? What do you think about the perception of Phillies fans? This seems to be a pretty classic case of fan cognitive bias: we tend to latch on to all the times they talk about the other team as evidence of bias, while unconsciously ignoring the times they talked about our team, and we have skewed perceptions about how enthusiastic they are about the other team versus our team. Phillies fans are doing the same thing, just the other way around. In Game 1, how did you feel about how they addressed the ball/strike calls that went against the Mets? Did you notice? If so, was it too little, too much, or just right? Were they being fair or unfair to one team? Phillies fans perceived extreme Mets bias, and were LIVID. What do you think about that? Also, remember that the Mets were never down in the series. That’s important context, because as I said before, these national broadcasts are “biased” toward close, exciting series that go the distance. Mets and Phillies fans each wanted a short series dominated by their team. That is NOT what these national broadcasts want. They want drama. They’re trying to hold the attention of people who don’t have a rooting interest, because the people who DO have a rooting interest aren’t going anywhere. If the Phillies had won Games 1 and 3, I PROMISE you, if there were any differences in their level of excitement for Phillies plays versus Mets plays, those differences would have flipped the other way. But fans of both teams would still claim bias toward the other team, thanks to cognitive bias, and because they’re so accustomed to their own team’s broadcasts that they lack perspective about what an unbiased broadcast sounds like. It doesn’t even make sense that they’d actually be biased toward the Phillies (or the Mets, for that matter). New York is a bigger market. Adam Amin is from Chicago. Pierzynski is most associated with the White Sox. Wainwright was a career Cardinal. Again, it’s the fans who are biased, not the broadcast. This is entirely about human psychology. (Here’s another question: how biased/unbiased do you feel Gary, Keith, and Ron are? Have they been the same over the years, or have they changed?)

The commentators were literally praising the phillies nonstop lmao. Look at their reactions towards a phillies player making a play vs their monotone voice when the mets make a play. I remember them literally going dead silent when a phillies player struck out to end the inning. Also mets fans know what it's like to hear unbiased (and actually good) announcers as Gary Keith and Ron always criticize the mets when they do bad and will get excited towards anything. These guys just sucked, especially Adam amin or whatever the fuck the midgets name is, he sucks in everything he announces

@@billybaggins1443 Thank you, seriously. I appreciate knowing that I’m not alone here, because I feel like I’m shouting into the void (which, I guess I sort of am). Between media echo chambers, the relationship between social media and dopamine, etc., you can see how people’s psychology has gotten so messed up. Everyone is so needy and desperate for attention and praise, that any attention/praise offered to someone else is perceived as a slight. And that phenomenon has spilled over into sports, since one’s fandom is a part of one’s identity. It was always there to some extent, but social media has made it a zillion times worse. “[Team A] is really good!” “Omg why do you hate [Team B] so much?” The whole thing is so weird.
