Exercise 5: "Rolling" two measures into one.

This video is about Extending 2 measures (with a pinch at the beginning of each measure) into 2 measures (with just a pinch at the beginning of the first measure. This is just another way to vary how you play the measure (anything to break up the monotony).
As with all these exercises, get your guitar and tune it to standard tuning and sit across from me as we work on this at 80, 100 and 120 beats per minute (the 120 bpm may be too much at this stage, but you can give it a try).
As with all my exercises, I'll have charts and diagrams to help you along the way. Each Lesson now has a corresponding Exercise. Stay tuned for future Lessons and Exercises as we endeavor to learn how to Travis pick.

My cousin’s a bass player. Yeah, I love Tom Waits, especially this little gem. Sorry for not responding sooner Jeremy; I’ve been pretty sick with bronchitis. Thanks for noticing Wayne. The past few months have been fraught with health issues: acute bronchitis, a fall, a kidney stone, root canal, to name a few. But the thing that killed me was the trigger finger on my left (fretting) hand. It kept me from playing for nearly three months. I finally saw a hand doctor and I ha d a cortisone injection a couple weeks ago and I hope to back soon. Cheers my friend.

Dennis, I have truly enjoyed and learned from your tutorials. My favorite covers are your John Prine covers, but I enjoy them all. I have a question. Lately, a couple of my friends have got into the Delta Blues, especially Mississippi John Hurt and Blind Boy Fuller. I looked at their styles on KZbin, and found their style is very similar to the Travis picking style you teach. Could your pattern be adapted for the Blues, and if so, a cover of a Blues tune or even a lesson on the Blues would be helpful and greatly appreciated.

My pattern can definitely be incorporated into blues, especially 12 bar blues. Maybe this could be a future lesson, when I’m back in the saddle are my hand surgery.
