Chess may have originated as a war game when there were fewer players. It should be updated for civilians by representing more types of weapons or units. This may be done by keeping the existing board and rolling dice before moving, with a roll upgrading a player. Example: rolling 3 dice and getting the same number on each die would upgrade a pawn to two moves. This adds uncertainty. Or, expand the board and add more players. UK's Hassabis, who kickstarted AI, said a new game should be invented that's easy to learn but takes long to master. He might help with an upgraded chess game that helps civilians to understand the complexities of war, but easy to learn.

chess is fine as it is. After five moves there are 69,352,859,712,417 possible games. An army intelligence exercise is another type of game. The prussian army trained with kriegspiel though. Two chess boards and you can only see your own pieces.
