Old gundam, Umineko, Magika Madoka, Ytp Mario, the giant orange cat from Azumanga Diaoh, the OVA Jojo, and other memes were all really popular around that time.

I was just thinking the same thing. Most tournaments now are broadcast around the world and have a ton of standards and they try to be sterile. I miss seeing a bunch of people get together for some good ole speedrunning races, but now they're all sponsored and they all have a big in-person crowd that has to be entertained. It's like everything is an extension of Twitch chat now

Even if there was something like a "fun only speedrun event" it'd become directly controversial to go there because they don't have an HR/PR department to constantly hassle them over pronouns and microaggressions.
