Forest Farming

10 жыл бұрын

From seed to seed-bearing plant, the life cycle of ginseng is discussed in detail in this video. Ginseng expert, Bob Beyfuss, exposes a $2-3,000 ginseng root which is preserved to collect the plant's seeds in order to preserve the genetic strain. We look at two different seeds, one whose embryo has developed and is ready to germinate next spring and one which still needs two cold treatments before it can break dormancy.

Why is there a difference in that wild plant and one you grow right next to it with the seeds produced by that plant? How is cultivated grown in the woods consided less valuable? I'm confused, I finally bought a house in the smokey mountains with 30 acres of woods and am going to buy a pound of sang seeds next month to plant in the woods, if I wait ten years, how can the buyer tell it's not wild?

i cut the root below the next year plant and replant it and it comes back up the next year to make more berries but to harvest again is a bout 7 to 8 years i don't see a point in killing the plant off if i can get it to come back the next year seeds take 7 to 8 years to start making lots of seeds again

I have found some massive roots with only 7-9 rings. One of them weighed over 11ozs wet. But only in one area of the south mountains in burke county nc. In other areas the plant itself will be huge, with small roots. I think it's because of the soil nutrients and the right amount of sun and shade. Who knows, I never heard of catskills sang . Only harvest the old,

Thanks for the great video. I'm looking to buy land this summer to start a maple syrup business in Northern Michigan. I would love to integrate ginseng (and probably ramps as well) in the under-story. Do you see any problems with this combination? Do you sometimes need to remove mature trees and create clearings in the forest for the ginseng to grow, or is it fine in the full shade of larger trees (as long as smaller plants and seedlings are removed). Do you recommend American ginseng over Korean in terms of ease of growth and marketability? Thanks again for sharing

Not sure where he got his info on 1-2 thousand. I buy Shang in Minnesota which is slightly lower in price than Wisconsin or New York Shang. If you’ve got a direct buyer, you could get 1500 per pound. Most diggers will sell for much less depending on the year. I paid 925 tops in Minnesota last year

Wile most ginseng does have five leaves it can have seven. I have a wild sang patch that has a big four in it and it always has seven leafs per prong on it and has forthe last 15 years i also have one that this year one prong has seven one has six and the other to have five a friend of mine also has one that came up this year in the same configuration so it can and will add leafs with age. Its just like they add prongs with age to all though i have never found one with more than five prongs on any one plant i have dug roots with two tops coming out of one root so you never know with ginseng.

People sell ginseng seeds and i assumed i can eat the leaves like any vegetable. Am i right? Also, in Korea, some people claim they dug up 400 year old wild ginseng. But it doesn't sound true if i listen to you.

so looking at this life cycle, you'd really want to keep it in the ground for 18-20 years while harvesting seeds and aim to have plants growing each year... then sell the old ones each year after the first 18 years, would that be a typical enterprise?
@exforestfarming
@exforestfarming 9 жыл бұрын
A root doesn't need to be 18 years in order to sell. Typically a root is grown for 4 - 6 years before a real profit can be made on it.

My grandma and I used to dig ginseng back in the 70s. I’m 54 years old. Last time I dug it was about $600 a pound. I’m thinking it may have been in a 90s. A friend of mineAnd I are thinking about growing Ginseng here in Ohio. We’re looking for some land right now. After watching some of your videos, I’m thinking our best route in order to pay for the property or at least make the property work for us would be to start out growing it in a greenhouse situation. We will be going into this with the understanding that it Is something that doesn’t happen overnight. And that it will take a few years. Do you have any comments that may help?

I just received a few 2 year old ginseng plants and some seeds. I saw where it's not a good idea to plant them under oak trees- unfortunately they are they only trees around that will offer the shade the ginseng needs; plus it's the end of January and I'm in New Jersey; what can I do to best ensure these plants grow? They are in my refrigerator right now.

are there any other plants that have bright red berry clusters that could be mistaken for ginseng? I found some plants that are like this and the root looks like a round bulb and very shallow like almost sitting on top of the ground, the weight of the berries nearly make the plant fall over, more like an onion, the berries are red and have 2-3 seeds per berry. I live in ohio and cannot find any look alike plants on the internet. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
