This was an emergency service call on an exhaust fan not working. It had an electrical short,a bad motor starter and a bad motor. Unfortionately I was not able to replace the motor so we changed the whole fan and got them back up and running by 12:30 the next day.

On some motors the rear of the case can be removed exposing a retainer clip, then pull shaft out of motor instead of fan. Reverse install and done. Some large pool pumps are that way. It took me a LONG time first time, then an old guy told me about it

For a while now we and our clients have preferred direct-drive fans (for general non-grease exhaust) because hey, no belts to break! For grease exhaust fans it's about 50/50 belt vs. direct for the projects I design. This is definitely good feedback from the field to inform future decisions for us engineers. Thank you!

When I was younger, I worked in some restaurants that if there was a power failure they made you keep cooking with no exhaust at all. I walked out on one job and said it's not safe, Ansul could go off, and the combusted gas fumes are toxic. I loved when you said there seems to be problems with every restaurant. Man... no more true words ever spoken. How lucky were they you "Just Happened" to have another Captive Air unit. Another amazing repair.

You handled it perfectly. I drill 2 quarter inch holes, bolt a short length of chain across the center of the wheel hub and slide hammer until the wheel breaks its bond. Then work it off with wooden wedges and a 5 LB sledge. My boss would frown upon changing the fan unfortunately, because I'd swap it for a practical design. Enjoyed the vid my man.

What a dumb design! I'm not a hvac guy so i'm not sure how this would affect balance, but my inclination would be to drill and tap two holes in the hub to allow use of a puller.. but if that would throw the balance off, that's a non-starter. The customer is lucky that you had a spare assembly....

All it would need is 3 or 4 threaded holes in the hub for a screw on hub puller. Also I am amazed why it is allowed to use single insulated wires for environments it cannot handle (I live in Europe). I do not say that those conduits are not there for protection but this is not the first time I see this failure mode on this channel.

Hey, I work for captiveaire and cover the Northern California region. Whenever I run into one of these I order the blower wheel and the motor, cut the old shaft and start from scratch. Those blower wheels are designed to be tough to get off. With all the grease and gunk I guess the had problems years ago with blower wheels falling off so they made it so that wheel is HARD to remove. Not great for techs but it definitely won’t fall off. When I do have to remove the wheel, because it’s a emergency situation, I do exactly what you said in the end of the video, I’ve got 4 of the pump up shims and I use an alligator multi socket & extension to get the set screws off

Since this is a recurring PITA, ahead of time, make up a flat version of a pickle fork out of the thickest material that would fit where you wanted to put the pickle fork (making the fork wide enough to spread the force out on the upper housing). Then, to remove the fan cage, install the pickle fork, unbolt motor, spray motor shaft with penetrant, and use a zip gun (air chisel) with either hammer or pointed bit (since motor shaft has indentation) to impact the motor shaft. I'd guess it's really a 2-person job since you'd need at least 3 hands... one pulling on the motor (ready to grab it when it comes free), one using the zip gun, and one ready to catch the fan cage when it breaks free.

That's pretty rare to see the wiring inside the conduit go bad. I had it happen once with a fan motor on a medium temp box. It took a full day to find because i had to check everything else. I wonder if the insulation gets damaged when they're pulling wire. The only way i could think to remove that fan would be to have some special kind Jack. the Simplex fire panel i work with daily, has an internal bypass mode that won't sound the alarms or shut down equipment or elevators, you still need to call the provider to take offline, but could do that work with customers in the restaurant and they wouldn't even know it went off. at my building i turned off an exhaust fan in the boiler room to work on stuck louvers, and the fire alarm went off when i cut the power to the fan, so you never know who wired what into the fire system

If the motor is thrashed, I use a sawzall to cut the shaft off. Then pound the shaft out of the blade with a brass drift after gently heating/oiling it. Worst case, you could have a machine shop press it out, but I like to go Neanderthal on it. That is how I do it for the big conveyor pizza ovens. I can usually do it with two blades on most shafts, sometimes three. Finding a 480 volt motor locally is another story.

Take a close look at the face of the hub - they do make a style of hub that can be removed with a grease gun - it will have a plug in it - there is a hole drilled into the middle of the shaft then the shaft is cross drilled to supply the high pressure grease from the grease gun to the outside of the hub - a grease gun will put out about 10000 pounds of pressure... the pressure will streatch the hub and it will pop off - odds are the wheel is mounted on a tapered shaft. And if that is not the case I'd call the manufacture and ask them how did they plan on changing the motor... I have seen these types of hubs on heavy duty stuff where it would take 100,000 lbs of hydraulic pressure to release the hub. If that is the type of hub it has be carefully because when the wheel releases it will do it all at once and could injure someone.

Two options for pulling that fan wheel off that I can think of: 1. Buy an automotive pickle fork with long enough handle, it might fit in that gap and allow whacking the thing off. Not a big fan of this solution as hitting things usually ends up in more damage or sudden unexpected happenings. 2. On the inside of the fan where you see the motor shaft, drill & tap two screw holes on opposite sides of the shaft to the hub of the fan blade, as it looked quite thick. Then screw in a piece of flat bar to these new holes that has a threaded hole in the middle (I'm pretty sure a ready made puller like this exists) and torque a bolt in the middle hole, so it pushes against the shaft end. Pro tip for drilling a hole, especially in steel: start off with a 2.5 or 3 mm (1/8" or a tad smaller) drill at full speed, drill the depth you need. These small drills have a non-existant chisel point, so they are very easy to push in to the metal. Then follow up with a larger drill, like 5 or 6 mm (1/4") and then your tap size drill. Makes it super easy and you don't have to use force to get the drill in to steel. Just in case the situation comes that you don't have a backup fan sitting in your shop ;)
@everydaythings4991

One idea I have is if you can flip the thing upside down so the motor is hanging. Take some wood shims and shim the wheel in like six places against the frame. Loosen the motor mount and use a punch to drive the shaft through the wheel. This would spread the load on the wheel and shock it, versus trying to pry on it. Sometimes one swift hit will loosen it up enough to work it off the shaft. If you can apply a little heat without catching it on fire, I'd do that as well!
@tyhuffman5447
@tyhuffman5447 4 жыл бұрын
Try some of those pneumatic wedges to “pull” the fans. It’ll probably take several but it will/should work. The force will be much more spread out so little chance of damage and the total amount of force will be much greater. You can use smallish inter tubes, the little square are used to lift refrigerators so the wheels can be extended easily.

Just a thought. If you used one of those pickle forks that they use to separate a ball joint or tie rod end on cars, it may allow you to force the turbine down. The hub on top is stout enough to handle it and the housing above should. The one I have is about 18 inches long but, you could easily weld an extension if needed. Worse case, I have made my own tools for weird or quirky jobs.🤔😊
@mysock351C
@mysock351C 4 жыл бұрын
They do make forks wide enough to clear the hub but theres only sheet metal on both sides of it to push on. Youd probably also have to stack two of them on top of each other as well. It probably could be fixed by drilling two holes in the fan and making some threaded plates to accept a puller, but probably too much work to do on a roof.
@coolezum
@coolezum 4 жыл бұрын
mysock351C you would push on the hub, there is some room above the hub if you look at his vid but, ya I thought same thing on drilling and tapping bottom of turbine fan. The wheel should not be on very tight as no rust just grease on shaft from kitchen.

@mysock351C 4 жыл бұрын
@@coolezum My concern was the sheet metal above the hub but if he could have moved the motor down far enough it would probably work. Posted the same thing above about tapping the hub plate. Dont know what its made of, tho. If the fan and motor is available as a module by itself maybe thats what they expect you to do. Still would see that costing about 500-700 dollars on its own. Seems kinda steep to leave out two threaded holes or some other provision to remove it.

Instead of levering down on the outside edge of the fan (risking bending it), how about using a steel rod, with the end ground down into a screwdriver blade section about 1/2 inch wide, thin enough to put or hammer into the narrow gap. Machine the outside end of the rod to 1/2 inch square to fit a standard socket handpiece and use that to twist the blade. If needs be, add an extension to the socket handpiece to provide additional twisting moment. In other words, twist to exert downwards pressure right at the centre, where it cannot cause damage?? Once it has been budged even a little, it would presumably come off the rest of the way fairly easily -- you just have to break its "lock".

I cut a slit into a 5/8 plywood with 2 sawhorses on it upside down with the weight of the motor pulling down. strike the shaft sicking up with a drift and hammer this displaces the load over the entire wheel. put something down to catch the motor usually i use ratchet straps with about 2 inches of play in them attached to the ends of the plywood. this method would have required 3 guys on a fan that size.

8:05 I think you could get a couple pieces of steel plate between the hub and the hole to hold the wheel down, then pull on the motor...

you need a couple cam-sticks, they're rods with dual spiraling out surfaces, when you use those airbags you want to put them inside "tacos" of fairly good gauge sheet metal, you can just put a cloth over that to keep it from sliding and you'll be good to go.

Just to let you all know the manufacturer has heard your comments and is adding threaded holes to the hub so you can use a standard pulley puller to remove these wheels.

On second look seeing the clean one the hub disk is thick enough to drill holes into and tap to accept a small puller like a steering wheel puller, assuming its not something cheap like cast aluminum or zinc. Using some 1/4-28 bolts would probably do it. Dont know if its worth it given it can be replaced as a module, but it looks doable, for what its worth.

If It were my job,and had the replacement in my truck,I would not waist a micro second trying to remove the wheel. Time is money,and the time that may be saved can be travel time to your next service call.And because these exhaust fans are so crucial to the restaurant, I would try and sell them a new set up for the other exhaust fan,that is IF .....that fan looks to be the same age,and original motor. They maynot go for it but I would try. Future work right ? I do not want to offend you by being a should of,would of person. You are wayyyyyyyy more mechanical/ intelligent then I will ever be. I am just thinking of how my boss would handle it, especially if they were a regular customer. Anyways,as always ......👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍!

He said the system had small ductwork and high static pressure, a normal upblast probably wouldn’t have worked there. Utility set was most likely the only option and using one like this that sits on the curb actually reduced the complexity.

maybe there's duct/hood temperature sensors and it still too hot inside or the equipment still throwing off too much heat so it set the alarm off on power failure and high temps. hard to say what new fang-dangled junk they have in place and forced to install

another possible method of removal could entail the use of a pair of wood wedges being driven together on opposite sides of the fan. this is still not ideal but it would at least create a more distributed force.

Could you of possibly drilled out the motor shaft a bit, to release some of the stress on the hub ? Then try to pull it off. Using a lesser diameter bit of course than the shaft. To then pull the fan off.

Chris, I agree, bad design, the engineers who design that fan assembly. should have stayed home that day. If there was more clearance by design, you could have a special slim locking wrench made, ( long handle vise-grips) to hold motor shaft, and then you could work spinning the impeller off. Something to think about for future disasters. But in short, you did the right thing, since you had a spare, swap out fan assembly, and deal with rebuilding the old one. Another idea, since you were replacing motor, take off top end cap, and jam something between armature and field, and then try to spin the impeller off. these are things to try, if only you had the time, certainly more difficult when high volume restaurant needs to operate The key thing, is to minimize downtime, and keep customer happy. You did the right, Great job Chris

Just started up a system in new restaurant that has two kitchens on two separate floors, anyways both kitchens are networked together, so if one ansil system pops they all go!!! Same company you are working on. Over engineered to say the least. Same issues that the electricians did not hook it up correctly.

If they are on seperate floors, it sounds like they may be on a common duct. in that case, all would need to shut down, if they all fire is dependent on the AHJ.

One idea how about one of those giant arm pulley pullers like the kind that removes 24 inch wheel pulleys not sure if the arms would open up enough to grasp the whole wheel but a thought , also mb zip screw a sacrificial hub under the wheel to get it to start pulling idk I guess anyway would possibly thru the wheel outta balance mb call the mfg and see if they have a specialty tool to remove that wheel assembly sorry for your headache brother but that’s what keeps the job interesting lol
