In this video I bring you along as I over come a crappy situation where an extractor broke off in a bolt. It is easy to lose our minds and flip out. I have learned over the years that as easy as it is to do just that, at the end of the day it does not solve any problems. Stay cool, refocus and work your plan. Life is a learning curve. -Enjoy!

That was a real pretty overcoat Mrs. O had today! Very festive looking like my favorite shirt I wear on Christmas day and Thanksgiving! About twenty five years ago I restored a 1965 John Deere 1010 crawler tractor (had to rebuild the transmission)! When I finished, I was an expert at removing broken bolts. Everything on those old tractors is made of carbon steel (super strong); don't see that now a days! Have you ever used POR (paint over rust). I got some rusty rims from the junk yard sanded them to remove the loose paint and coated them with this "paint". I mounted my studded snows and they only have a smidge of rust where the lugs go and it's been ten years!

By sheer coincidence I am literally in the middle of the same job on a Dodge Dakota. 4.7 ... it's so nice not to suffer alone. I did not break an easy out, I've just been welding nuts onto the cut studs and giving it the heat.

Yea, thats the Way to do it ! When u heat the Stud it Expands and contracts Breaking the Bond between Head & stud. sometimes u dont even need to weld nuts on , just heat stud with torch till it glows , let it cool for a bit , spray on wd-40 on threads & use stud removal tool on it.

At least the vehicle is floating at the right height and you are inside out of the elements. Those are 2 nice advantages diy’er does not usually get. Also having a torch and big nasty is a nice adder as well. Plenty of things to be happy about! Love the rusty manifold videos, probably my favorite.

I remember back in the day, that to change a radiator, it took 4 bolts and two clamps. Now you have to remove nearly the whole front end.

Took mine out of a 1976 Honda Civic with four bolts and two clamps. Took it to the radiator shop, they cleaned and fixed it, gave it back, put it back in. Took me longer I think to ride there and back then to remove and reinstall. RIP Orange Honda.

The "spray it with ____ and it will come right off" people puzzle me.. I live north enough that the only thing that happens with "spraying it" is now you have a flammable liquid sitting there that will ignite when you give up and torch it off. Use us anytime, Eric, for emotional support... we feel your pain. :D

Exactly. Occasionally if the fastener isn’t terrible I will wire wheel the stud first, then screw some penetrant on to get it moving. Otherwise, right to the torch

I think that depends on whether you're a pro working on stuff that needs to move the same day, or working at home on stuff that isn't an emergency. I've lived in the Northeast all my life, and I've gotten some really gnarly suspension bolts out when I have the time and foresight to spray them with Kroil 2-3 times over the *week* prior to when I want to do the job. But it needs time to work, and you can't do that on something that got dropped off at 8AM and needs to be done by 5PM. That's why pros use the torch.

Doing a brake flush turns into a frozen bleeder screw too caliper replacement then new new lines. I don't miss the rust belt and think that salt does more harm than good for vehicle / road safety and environment. It melts snow to water that will freeze and on a quiet night you can hear your vehicle rusting. . In the deep south they only use sand when the road and over passes freeze. I have been here almost 30 years and the bleeder screws come out no problem unless it is a vehicle from the rust belt. Lol. A fun fact if you break a brake bleeder screw on a caliper if it's your own. Put away the drill bits and eazy-outs and unbolt the caliper with the brake hose/ line. Put a block of wood in, hold the brake line bolt at the highest point and loosen the brake line bolt to remove the air, lather rinse and repeat. Easier with 2 people or a coat hanger/ wired up to something. You don't have to buys calipers and your brakes are bleed. Always re-lube the Pins. I lightly lubricated the riding contact points. If over lubricated sand and trash with stick to it. Heard it in a love song . . . can't be wrong. Haha. Merry Christmas and happy new year. 👍

I needed this video! My work does a ton of tires this time of year and its been extra brutal for some reason this season!! Tires are definitely not complicated but they are annoying and can be a pain! seriously today all 8 of my 1 hr appointments were all for tires and I was hating being a Mechanic! But this cheered me up made me realize it could always be a worse and got me through yet another day!

I live in Tennessee and I chuckle at the rust infested upper Midwest cars when they move here. Almost every one has rust holes in the rocker panels, and the trucks have rust holes around the fender wells. Thanks for paying higher taxes for living up north though, we appreciate it.

Glad we were all available for the moral support. I been doing rustbelt repairs for around 25 years, besides the occasional swear word, I never got pissed off doing mechanical repairs. Working with wrench throwers always amazes me as to why they keep doing it. If ya hate what you do, do something different for a job. Regardless of the content, I always watch your videos. This video was perfect timing, was having a bad day where no car I had come in was willing to work with me and me becoming more and more irritated was just making things worse. You are right, because by the end of the day final car I had to finally just walk away for 5 minutes and the moment I came back, I had a cooler mind and everything began cooperating. Had it not been for me being stubborn and refusing to take a step back hours earlier, today may have turned out on a much more positive way. I am electrician and on a house was putting in new panel and got done turned things on and had 220 to a bunch of plugs, we had been at it for about 10 hours. Wore out mentally and physically, walked away and about 2am I got an ephany, because I knew that I did the wiring right. But the circuit to the barn was the only one that I hadn’t done, the next day I turned that breaker off and turned the rest back on and everything was perfect!! But what it says just walking away from a problem give s new insight into a problem.

Exhaust works from the engine manifold all the way to the exhaust tip, IMHO is the most frustrating part of auto repairs. From nuts that shrink due to rust to studs that corrode so much that the nuts freeze on them and turn the stud and nut out together. Mrs O's cameo appearances are great. Keep on keeping on, SMA.

Your comment on this episode is right on. I have enjoyed your channel for over a year (maybe more) and it is always good. If I don't learn something at least I can identify. You are a perfect example of someone who probably skipped the "higher education" route and are doing something you love, don't have huge college debt, aren't asking customers if you would like to have fries with that, and are making money and are happier more than 80% of them. You are the poster child of the American dream. Love your channel. BTW I spent over 40 years in a small machine job shop in Montana where we did everything from jet engine repair to fixing some poor old farmers antique farm tractor - Loved it. Took me 3 months to get my car inspected. After inspecting it Subaru wanted $1200 to replace all my brake lines. I had been greasing all my lines except for the one under the rear plastic that I did not see. I had my muffler shop do half of it for $100 and I did the other half. Then I bring it back to Subaru for my free inspection and my recalled steering wrack they tell me that the other shop crushed a frame support and it would need a Certified welder. $700 dollar weld and now it is inspected. Keep up the good work Mr. O We need people like you.

Interesting side note. The channel Rich Rebuilds is in the salt belt( Taxachussesett). He built a Tesla, dropped a LS in it and took it to SEMA. Ice-Tea (that's its build name)was one of the most amazing thing there. There is a video of when they took it to a full service gas station. Lmao.

I've done my share of exhaust manifolds here in the Common Wealth of Caintuck and have dealt with a broken bolt or 300, but that rust. Wow. We have our own but you'all have a special breed of it. Oh and I liked that new fangled torque wrench you had there. The home grown type.

Thanks for taking us along on a job that could go really far south. It took me years to calm down and just get on with it. I was never a real hot head but sometimes when the work gets difficult and things aren't going your way -- you just gotta take a deep breath and realize that getting pissed off isn't helping. You have to pass on the hard earned wisdom and let the young ones know that this is not a "Orange County Choppers" episode. Great work Eric.

This was a good reminder to keep calm, and it will keep you moving on vs. giving up and throwing tools. Being from Michigan, I'm used to all the rust, and HEAT definitely makes it much easier !

These words of wisdom, goes for most crappy jobs. Dont get mad, just plan and work and get it done. As a builder I find myself having bad days like this, and I tell myself the same thing, settle down and get it done. I also do alot of my own wrenching in the evenings after my day job on my old work trucks. Ran into old rusty bolts on rear brakes and ended up welding nuts onto the old bolts to have something for the wrench to grab onto. That sure makes for a long evening getting new brakes on a truck for work the next day. I always tell the wife, "somebody has to do it as it aint doin itself". But boy i wish it was somebody else once in awhile.
