I daily drove an 01' Z3 2.5i for about 3 years. Ended up selling the car for another 4th gen Camaro. Long story short, it was a great little car, good 5 speed manual, good seats, great sound. Had some issues but what E36 car doesn't have issues... I'd certainly buy one again if the price was right.

I own this car in Imola red with the red and black interior.Before that I had a 97 Z3 which was fun but the M roadster is a lot faster and a blast to drive.I don't really care for the Z4s including the new model that came out in 2019 its too big and no manual shift.I use this a weekend driver or spring and fall car with the top down it is not that comfortable as a daily driver .I am in a national club for these roadsters we have our 25th anniversary of the Z3 in Greer SC where the plant is the week of July 4th we should have 140 cars Z3s and 4s M roadsters and Z4m roadsters and coupes and the Z3 and M clownshoes.Enjoyed watching your review.

Great review Kevin, usually I agree with your observations. I have driven the BMW and Boxster of that vintage. I don't think anything is in the class of the 986 for the analog experience. If you get to Southwest Fla. you would be welcome to evaluate my 01 Boxster. They are probably one of the most under rated cars ever produced. Keep it up, even if I don't agree with you on everything in lockstep, your reviews are really great, and your candor is very much enjoyed.

The base 986 2.7 and Z3 2.8 were so close and yet so different I couldn't make up my mind and had both. As you go to S and M models the Boxster outclassed the Z. And by 2005 the 987 was the sports car and the Z4 more of a comfy sporty GT. I love'm all!

So after having 3 miatas, would you recommend I buy one of these? The miatas in my area are $6,000-$8,000. And there's Z3s selling for $4k.

Depends on what you want, affected by your age. The Miata allows excessive heat and noise into the passenger compartment. I had an NA and a couple of Z3's at the same time. The Miata is more balanced in the twisties. The Z3 pulls out of the corners and powers up the mountain better. I have driven the NA, NB, and NC. The first two are similar, the NC quite the upgrade and better car, but loses the gocart feel. The Z3 has wonderful noise and heat insulation. And had creature comforts and safety features like heated seats and traction control early on. I'm more of a Z3 fan, am on my fifth one. Drove the '00 M, but chose to keep two 3.0L, one manual, one automatic. The early 986 and Z3 had flipped HP and Torque numbers, the former having more HP, and the latter more Torque. The Z3 is the most fun to drive or cruise in, the 986 is a slot car, and the MX5. Miata is not always the answer, but it is if you're at either end: new to roadsters or want to race affordably.

The clown shoe coupe is what I'd prefer but this is definitely one of the last true analog BMW sports cars. I think this would be an awesome weekend toy.

My friend paid About$8500- $9,000 for his Reg Z3 ,W/ Way Under 100,000 mls.,About 3 years ago & Drove the Crap Out of it first 2 years W/ No Major Mech Issues,But like the M,Susp.is Weak for the Power.

Yea that's good value I think even non M Z3s can be a lot of fun although 3 years prices were...different to say the least. Pandemic drove the prices on used cars to the stratosphere 😅

The z3 M commands more money because it’s an entirely different car. Faster motor, upgraded suspension, different body width, different wheels, upgraded braking system, upgraded interior, and it’s an M. That alone commands more money. I will be selling mine a 2000 silver Z3 M with 134,000 miles for 10.5k. It’s a clean title, but it’s not cosmetically perfect. Maybe two years ago the car would be worth 7k, but not right now.

Something of this age and without a solid maintenance history would be a nightmare to drive that distance. The car itself also like he stated is not comfortable for long driving either and is more geared towards short trips and tracks

True sports cars are not about hp or electric seats but lighter weight for nimbleness. I think the Miata with weight reduction on every possible little things is more genuine of it being a sports car imo. Weight is sports cars enemy.
