The mission of the San Diego Model Railroad Museum is to research, collect, preserve, and present the heritage of American railroading using educational programs, displays, toy trains, and scale models of California railroads. Spanning over 27,000 square feet of trains, trestles, and tracks we are in the heart of natural beauty framed by the majestic backdrop of Balboa Park. At every twist, turn, and tunnel we spark curiosity with developing educational programming that includes education milestones like critical thinking, creativity, and problem solving.

This is such a great video! What would I give to run my Lightning Express Excursion Train across this layout. This was such a treat to watch. Someday I hope to visit and see this fantastic layout in person.

Just a little note: the green baggage/passenger combine shown on the short train at the start of the video was never in regular service on the SD&A. It is in the collection of the PSRM at Campo as part of their African American History exhibit. The car and another one similar to it came from Texas and were segregated cars known as "Jim Crow" cars. The actual cars, made mostly from wood, are displayed in one of the museum buildings to protect them from the weather. Also, the layout, in order to accommodate more trains, has several double track sections that do not actually exist in the Gorge or west of there. Tecate is 6 miles from the border tunnel, Tunnel 4.

Awesome layout - been to the Museum and railroad many times. But first time really seeing "behind the scenes" and the many incredible hidden gems. Great video - very impressive.

Since my new layout is my first crack at passenger and mixed freight and passenger ops, I’ll truly for the first time enjoy running passenger baggage and mail to each depot, one of my main priority trains was known as the Wells Fargo express of the GULF COAST LINES. Another known as “old salty” as engineers said that running that train to the coast the train would be covered in salt on its return trip. I also have a daily doodlebug commuter as well as a occasionally rerouted Santa Fe chief. Awesome layout all of these are inspirational!

It may not be the largest layout in the US, but it definitely has some of the longest straight runs of any HO scale model RR in the world!
