I'm glad you did this one. My favorites are creepy/ghost/horror/mysteries. - The history of Japan and Korea is one with PTSD that still resounds from the Imjin War (late 1500s, an extremely brutal Japanese invasion), and of course, the Japanese Occupation/WWII. The General was probably a Japanese general in the Imjin War, and the character says he died in Japan at the Battle of Sekigahara (a civil war battle), and was dug up and brought back to Korea by the "monk" (fox). - The character says this when he's talking to Hwa-rim as the Mountain God/Tree. - This movie is about cultural trauma. You can see this clearly in Mr. Park's reaction to his grandfather and (so well acted) in Hwa-rim, as well as Mr. Kim's, reaction to the monster.

The movie has so many hidden messages about the Korean-Japanese conflict. And the best scene for me was the scene where the Japanese general face to face with the ghost grandma. It’s actually a metaphor between the Japanese soldier and Korean comfort women (sex slaves) during the war. So this movies was actually intended to shade the Japanese violence towards Korea during the occupation time.

boguk(boguk temple)'s mean is "protect the country". Korea has Chinese characters culture(East asia culture), We use words in Chinese characters, but we only write them in Korean, not in Chinese characters. why boguk's mean isn't explained subtitles. boguk, car number(0815 etc), and etc ... mean korea's history that had to protect from Japan. Gisunae is not common name for monk. They got the name when they became monk, but the name is chinese character means buddha's will. so movie's characters thought the name was strange. Gisunae's real mean is Kitsune, It's mean fox in Japanese. Gisueae changed the Japanese pronunciation of Kitsune to sound like Korean. It's a small part, but if you know it, I think it'll help you understand the movie a little more.

I love your reaction lol For the shaman’s ritual scene, it’s called Daesal-gut, a typical ritual from the northern part of Korea where the shamans perform to exorcist strong evil sprits and send them into the pig’s body instead of human’s. Normally they summon the general’s spirit and when the spirit enters the shaman’s body, they stab themselves with blades or sometimes dance on top of the sharp blades to show people the guardian spirit has entered the shaman’s body so “everything is under control” also when she devours the animals intestine / blood, it’s the spirit consuming them not the shaman they prepare them as a sacrifice. In the ancient times, they used the live animals to sacrifice but now it’s illegal obviously so use the dead ones. You don’t really get to see them in big cities like Seoul but when you go to small towns in Korea you still see them time to time.

this Movie It is based onJapanese archipelago, which had been dormant and isolated from civilization until the 1500s, awakened with reforms and openness from the West, and how Koreans, who had considered themselves culturally and militarily superior, suffered great hardships at the hands of Japan until the early 1900s.The background of this great war(Imjin War, Seven years War , The Bunroku Keicho War) that took place in 1592 is that the carelessness and arrogance of Joseon (Korea), which enjoyed only peace and culture for 200 years, treated Yamato (Japan) as a barbaric pirate group rather than a country. However, Yamato had a high level of tactics through clan battles for 100 years, and the 170,000 troops of Toyotomi, who unified the whole country, armed with Portuguese matchlocks and attacked Joseon.Historically, Japan has waged a surprise war without a declaration of war.The 16,000 Elite heavy cavalry that Joseon was proud of, which had suppressed the cruel northern peoples, was defeated by the Yamato Matchlock unit, and 70, 000 Joseon Main Forces was pushed back all the way to Pyongyang. Yamato, which was a medieval feudal lord era, gained land and people if it won a war, but in Joseon, which was a centralized country, the king fled to the north, but the people and monks formed a militia and fought to the end , the Japanese army was embarrassed by the existence of the Militia.Admiral Yi Sun-sin of Joseon defeated the Japanese navy by winning all 33 naval battles despite overwhelming odds. The basic weapons of the Joseon army were bows, spears, and swords, as well as gunpowder bombs and various cannons of different sizes..The Ming Dynasty (China) sent reinforcements to help Joseon, but instead harassed Joseon by plundering and engaging in internal communication with Japan, but helped Yi Sun sin in the final naval battle.Yamato, who did not have the technology to make pottery, Taken in hundreds of Joseon pottery craftsmen to make pottery and exported the pottery to Europe, where it received favorable reviews. This Great war lasted for seven years and ended with Toyotomi's death.A quarter of Koreans were sacrificed in this terrible war, and in Japan, there is a grave of head, ears, nose, a Korean civilian, as a record of the war. This Great War was a symbolic event in which the international status of the Korean Peninsula with 4,800 years of history was reversed by the Japanese archipelago with 1,800 years of history. Two years after the end of the Imjin War, the famous Battle of Sekihara, which appears in movies, took place in Japan. Joseon was unable to recover from the devastation of this terrible war for 300 years, and was invaded by the Manchus of the Qing Dynasty. It also suffered the humiliation of being brutally ruled for 35 years by Japan, which was armed with Western civilization while maintaining a policy of political strife and isolation..300 years later, Joseon became a reclusive country with a policy of isolation, and Japan defeated the Russian fleet through the strategy of Yi Sun-sin(T tactic, a modification of A cran's wing formation), the great naval admiral of the country it invaded 400 years ago, and later joined the ranks of the great powers.Yi Sun sin's the world's top 3 naval admiral and the turtle ship is an invincible Korean Item in the Age of Empires PC Games

Hello! As a Korean, I loved your reaction. I was very happy that you found some information about the movie :) This movie is hard to understand without knowing the historical context and the hatred that Korea has towards Japan. Japan has caused a lot of damage to Korea in the past. They never admitted or apologized for the oppression they waged :( Anger about it is often expressed in movies and media like this. (Japan often portrays themselves as the biggest war victims in the media. From the point of view of Koreans... It's very funny :D They don't learn the historical fact that they've damaged the world.)

For the ritual scene, real shaman had to be present because they were doing the actual ritual. Apparently the real shaman had to intervene during the filming because they actually almost called out a demon and some people on set started to pass out.

I haven't gotten around to watching this one yet, but I absolutely adore Korean horror. I Saw the Devil, A Tale of Two Sisters, and The Wailing are three of the best. I have no doubt this one is just as fantastic.

Thank you for reacting this movie. In Korea, the place with a lot of foxes usually considered as a bad place for graves. Since foxes tend to dig holes on the ground, and the habit can ruin the grave and/or buried body.

The hidden fun of this film is that the story of the entire film is divided into two with the appearance of the Japanese general, a monster of the Fox, as the saying goes, 'The fox severed the tiger's waist.'
