exid debuted during the transition period between 2nd and 3rd gen but they are mostly considered 3rd gen because they didn't actually become popular until 2014 with up&down and i can't quite understand why. this song is SO 2nd gen kpop, it literally screams t-ara, kara and 2ne1, and it's a BOP, just like the rest of their earlier albums. how did people sleep on exid for a whole 2 years when they were putting out songs like this...

The market is and was back then over saturated. Sadly talent alone wasn't enough to stand out, so you either popped out because of sheer luck of landing an overnight bop, hard work, a chance or by standing out by any means good or bad. Many groups will despite quality work go under just because there is only so many groups a person can healthily follow. So the ones with less advertising/exposure tend to just get drowned.

You don't understand why they only became popular later on or why they are considered 3rd generation? I assume the later because of the other 2nd gen girl group mentions and the other reply talking about their late success but, as far as music goes, 3rd generation sounded the exact same as 2nd generation up to 2015 so that's not really something that makes EXID 2nd gen (although they are pretty gen 2.5 as other 2011/12 groups are). It was only around 2016/17 that the 3rd gen sound came around and is the norm up to now. The same can be said about 2nd generation, it sounded like 1st generation up to 2006/07.

@@vinnie7070 i disagree with that actually, to me the clear cut (musically) between 2nd and 3rd gen came around 2013. the beginning of 3rd gen is generally considered to be exo's debut in 2012 and exo's very early releases do sound very 2nd-gen-like, but by 2013/14 their music and the music of newer groups like bts and got7 was already much different than 2nd gen. there are even people who consider nct to be a 4th gen group, and they debuted in 2016. i guess what i was wondering is why, in 2012, when 2nd gen groups were still going strong and the first 3rd gen groups were having success with similar music, exid wasn't.

@@_jeon_ggukie Really? I think BTS and GOT7 in 2013 and 2014 sounded exactly the same as 2011-12 releases by other boy groups. Stop stop it, No More Dream, Girls Girls Girls, Boy In Love, A, the list goes on. Same for girl groups. For EXO the same, the first modern sounding song they put out was Love Me Right and it's aging incredibly (even though I don't like it). Call Me Baby has a pretty clear inspiration so it just sounds like 1st gen/old western music. I mean NCT would be 4th gen if generations were defined by musicality which they really aren't. 2nd gen wasn't born because they were putting different music from 1st gen, it was still the same sound for half a decade. I guess they just blended in too well and you couldn't distinguished EXID from others.
