Every comeback, EXO gains new fans! But I have to say, Obsession is SUCH a confusing place for new fans to start lol. So much to explain! Short version: EXO is designated by the Korean government as the official group of South Korea and serve in an ambassadorial capacity sometimes. Originally 12 members. Half did songs in Korean; the other half did the same songs in Mandarin. Funny you said the production in Korea is "otherworldly because EXO debuted with concept as aliens with 12 superpowers. Three of the 4 Chinese members left the group so there are 9 members left. You only see 6 here. Two members are serving in the military. The remaining Chinese member (Lay Zhang) promotes as a solo artist in China until some Chinese/Korean politics get worked out. In Obsession, 6 of the 9 members have been cloned by an evil enemy, which is why they appear to be fighting themselves.

Here is some information about EXO that I hope will help answer most of your questions. EXO's concept and storyline is kind of complicated, so in order to understand what is happening in their MVs you need to understand their origin story. As you might have noticed, EXO is known for their vocals and for their dancing. As an SM Entertainment group its really no surprise that the members are all amazing singers and dancers because that's just a fact about the type of people that SM selects to be a part of its company. SM has become known for its amazing vocalists and dancers and that is why its one of the big 3 entertainment companies in Korea and around the world. EXO currently has 9 members (originally 12) and all of them are amazing vocalists, however, 2 are considered the group's main/lead rappers (Chanyeol and Sehun), but there are several other members that are sub-rappers as well. If you follow SM Entertainment groups, you will soon discover that all of SM's rappers were actually chosen to become trainees for their vocal and/or dancing skills. All of SM's rappers learned to rap, or at least became good at it, after they joined the company. Therefore, all of SM's rappers are amazing singers, as well as really good rappers. SM is known for having some of the best vocalists and dancers in the industry and the members of EXO are proof of that. EXO's MVs are kind of like a movie -- its a movie that has been going on for the past 7 years and it has no sign of coming to an end any time soon. But at this point its going to be kind of hard for you to fully understand what is happening in the storyline of EXO's MVs unless you really spend some time getting to know them and their story. Because all of EXO's MVs and storylines from everything EXO has ever been involved in are connected and it all tells a little more of EXO's story. And not only that, but EXO aren't even human, so that throws an even more complicated concept into the mix. LOL But to help you begin to understand why we say its hard to explain things to you ... here is some information about EXO. To truly understand EXO you need to understand that EXO debuted in 2012. "Mama" is EXO's debut song and MV and It is how EXO was introduced to the world and it explains the group's concept. So to really understand EXO you need to start from the very beginning and watch both of their "Mama" MVs. From day one, EXO's concept is that they are aliens from planet EXO and they came to Earth with superpowers to protect the Tree of Life from the Red Forces. (Red in EXO's MVs represents the Red Force.) Each of the members has a superpower that is unique to them and almost every MV will have at least one, if not all of them, using their powers. Exo, as in exoskeleton, means "outer," so as a member of EXO they are outside the ordinary.The group's concept comes from the real term exoplanet, which is a term that is used for a planet that is outside our solar system, so their name was chosen to represent the fact that they are stars that are "out of this world" when it comes to their talents. EXO's concept is also connected to real life planetary and solar events so all of EXO's comebacks and new song releases for the main group of EXO are all connected to when eclipses and other planetary phenomenons take place. For example, their comeback for their "War" album and "Power" album coincided with when we had a solar eclipse, etc. SM Entertainment, and its founder, Lee SooMan, has all of EXO's release dates and concepts planned out for years in advance, and it all has something to do with real celestial events that are predicted to take place. So what you saw in the "Obsession" MV was that EXO's doppelgangers were actually their alter ego clones and they were using their superpowers, such as Chanyeoul with his fire power, Sehun uses his wind power to deflect the arrows and Suho controls water in the room with all the pictures of water, etc. to fight their other selves. You see the planet on fire in the end of the MV because its supposed to show how the world is coming to an end as EXO (the good guys in all black) and X-EXO (the evil ones in the colorful outfits with crazy hair and makeup) battle for control, etc. Now you also need to know that In the beginning there was 12 members and they were split up into 2 groups EXO-K and EXO-M. EXO-K sang and performed their songs in Korean and EXO-M sang and performed those same songs in Mandarin Chinese. EXO-K had 6 Korean members and EXO-M had 4 Chinese members and 2 Korean members. So to really understand their full origin story you have to watch both the K and the M version of "Mama." However, since then 3 of the 4 Chinese members have left the group (short answer, to focus on their solo work back in China) but there is still one Chinese member left, Lay. (Any performances or MVs you watch that took place prior to May 2014 you will see all 12 of the members. Kris and Luhan left in 2014 and Tao left in 2015.) However, now, because they no longer have enough Chinese members they no longer do separate promotions, but they still produce most of their MVs and main songs in both Korean and Mandarin, they just now promote all as one big group, EXO with 9 members. However, in the "Obsession" MV there are only 6 members because 2 of the members are on hiatus right now as they serve in the military; and due to some political issues between the Korean and Chinese government, Lay -- their Chinese member -- is unable to participate in activities with the group because of the company's Korean affiliation. Not only does EXO have amazing MVs, but its almost always double because most of the time when they have a Korean version they also will have a Mandarin version, so it means they have to shoot two separate videos.Their fandom name is EXO-L because L falls right between K and M and it stands for Love. 😍Get it? EXO-K, EXO-L, EXO-M (K-L-M in the alphabet) Once you have seen "Mama" and start to understand EXO's backstory, if you watch any of their other MVs, such as their "Power" MV, it should make more sense to you if you keep in mind all the details about them being aliens with superpowers and how they are on a mission, etc. For example, we originally thought their "Power" MV was all about how the Red Forces stole EXO's powers and they had to fight the robot, which was under the Red Forces control, to get their powers back. And once they got their powers back they were then sent to Earth. However, now that we have "Obsession's" piece of the story, we think "Power" is about how X-EXO are being trained by the Red Force and they have been sent to Earth to infiltrate humanity and spread their evil agenda. EXO has been sent to try and stop them. The one thing you have to keep in mind with all of EXO's MVs, and I really mean all of them -- including EXO-CBX MVs, and several of Lay's solo MVs, as well as Baekhyun's recent solo debut MV for "UN Village" and his album "City Lights"; and probably even EXO-SC and Chen's solo work as well. And because Baekhyun and Kai are involved, even SuperM's storyline -- is that they are all connected and they all tell a little more of EXO's story and why they are on Earth, etc. Unfortunately, to make it even more difficult to understand, each part of the story is not necessarily in chronological order, so we as EXO-L have to become detectives and analyze every aspect of all of their teasers, MVs, song lyrics, albums, choreography, concert VCRs and even live performances and piece it all together to understand the story behind it all. To help you pinpoint the powers being used in their MVs and live performances here is a list of the members and what their special power is. EXO-K 💦 Suho (Kim JunMyeo) is the leader of the group and he is a lead vocalist -- his power is the ability to control water (Fun fact: Suho in Korean means guardian, as in the guardian of EXO. That's why as the leader of EXO, his stage name is Suho) 💡Baekhyun is a main vocalist and his superpower is the ability to control light 🔥Chanyeol is the main rapper and lead vocalist -- his power is the ability to control fire and his spirit animal is the phoenix. 🌏D.O. (Do KyungSoo) is a main vocalist and his power is the ability to control earth (dirt) which gives him strength/force ☄Kai (Kim JongIn) is a main dancer, lead vocalist and sub-rapper and his power is teleportation. (Kai means door or gateway in Korean so his stage name symbolizes his role within EXO's storyline. ) 🌪Sehun is the youngest member of the group and he is a lead rapper, lead dancer and a vocalist -- his power is the ability to control wind EXO-M ❄Xiumin (Kim MinSeok) is the oldest member of the group and he is a lead vocalist and lead rapper and his power is the ability to control snow/ice (frost) 🦄 Lay (Zhang Yixing) is the Chinese member of the group, he is a main dancer, lead vocalist and rapper -- his power is the ability to heal anything. 🌩 Chen (Kim JongDae) is a main vocalist and his power is the ability to control thunder/lightning/electricity (As you can see, Xiumin and Chen were given stage names that sounded more Chinese so they would fit in better in EXO-M because they are the Korean members of the Chinese group) The Chinese members who have now left the group: 🐉 Kris was the leader of EXO-M and he was a main rapper and vocalist -- his power was the ability to fly and his spirit animal was a dragon 💭 Luhan was a main vocalist and his power was telekinesis (The ability to control things with his mind) ⏰Tao (Z.Tao) was a lead rapper and vocalist and the martial artist of the group, so he did the flips and stunts in the group's routines. EXO is more on a vocal group. They have 3 powerful vocals in kpop. Though other members are really good too, even the main rapper can sing, some are currently lead actors in musical. Jennie's ex, Kai is a Gucci ambassador and is voted as best dancer in kpop through years. EXO is known for their amazing live performances.
