The song is written and produced by Lay, Chen and Chanyeol. Chanyeol wrote the rap part, Chen for the Korean lyrics and Lay for the Chinese lyrics. 2014 is considered to be the black year of EXO as there were many issues at that time Baekhyun dating and "fans" demanding him to leave the group, Kris leaving the group a week before their concert. Then, Luhan was unable to join overseas concerts due to health reasons and on October 2014, he also left EXO. Tao then left on 2015 because his father wishes him to do so due to "SM's lacked of support" and Tao being frequently injured. Lay said on his speech when they won Daesang award on MAMA 2014, "also want to dedicate this award to 2014. A lot of people thought 2014 was the colour black for EXO, but from today, MAMA's stage onwards, this colour will be re-defined. Do you know? I believe we have the brilliance of 2015." After EXO released this song as an apology to all of the things that happened in 2014, EXO-ls replied by a song entitled " Dear, You"

Promise is incredibly heartbreaking because the members wrote it as an apology to exols as a direct result of their members leaving (actually I don’t think Tao had even fully left before it was released, so it hit even harder after he left), at least one of them (especially Kai) cried almost every single time they performed it, and you would always see members doing their best to hold back the tears because they felt so sorry for putting exols through all this pain. Also, if you think this was emotional, wait until you hear Chanyeol’s solo song, Hand.

I have been an EXOL since the very start, and tbh it was truly hard for me to go forward when my chinese boys left the group with reasons. I tried to move on but it got me hurt everytime and it wasn't stopping at all. Then EXO released this song, and I was like getting slapped to get to the reality that I still had my 9 boys, our beautiful memories, our amazing time together since the start. Promise is such a sacred song that I love it so much but tried to avoid it as much as possible. I can never listen to this without being emotional. The memories and the pain from OT12 keeps flashing back. "Don't Go" is another EXO + EXO-L song for me. And yes, Chanyeol's melodic part and Suho's bridge are just thr best. It is just so sad that many antis criticise Chanyeol's rapping in this one when they don't know anything. Pls react next to MADE IN YOU by Suho. It is part of his Solo Album Self-Portrait.
