Lay had composed the song and he really wanted to have it be an EXO song; Chen helped him write the lyrics, Chanyeol wrote the rap for the Korean version, and all the other members offered their suggestions/opinion. Lay said SM actually didn't wanna release the song, though; I don't know if this was before or after it had lyrics, but SM kept telling Lay it needed work/didn't work. EXO actually performed this on stage several times, including what you watched, before it was even released on an album or had a Chinese/Mandarin version (which all EXO songs used to have a Chinese/Mandarin version & Korean version). The song was added to the next album EXO released, when fans' response to it was so positive and there was a huge demand^.^ The song was written as an apology and a new promise from EXO to EXO-Ls, after two members left. From day one, EXO's motto has been "We Are One"; they say it as part of their greeting and again at the end of some of their performances. So, they felt as if they broke an unspoken promise to fans to remained unified (& also a bunch of other horrible things happened that year in 2014), and so Promise was written. Sadly, before the song was officially released on EXO's album and the Chinese version was written, another member filed a lawsuit against SM and left EXO. Lay later had to translate the lyrics into a Chinese/Mandarin version & write the rap for that version by himself; a lot of fans believe you can feel an even heavier mood in the Chinese/Mandarin version.

7:50 Xiumin (also part of CBX, with Chen and Baekhyun) can actually hit the highest notes out of all the members! Lay can go very high as well, but has a very different voice; still soft, but more closed off. He sings at the beginning, right after Chen. Chanyeol has quite a nice singing voice-- one of my favorites-- and he is extraordinarily gifted musically (raps, sings, writes, produces, plays electric/acoustic guitar, piano, drums) His live covers of Creep and All Of Me are spectacular.

"Promise" was wrote and composed by EXO's remaining Chinese member, Lay with the Korean lyrics wrote by Chen (an EXO-M member) and rap by Chanyeol. It was created in 2014 after 2 of the Chinese members (Kris and Luhan) left and was released in 2015 after the third Chinese member (Tao) left. The song was meant to explain everything that happened to them in 2014 with the members leaving the company and "breaking their promise" to EXO-L to always be one. Its an apology to the fans saying they are sorry for causing the fans pain and for making EXO L sad. They all had a really hard time during this time period because all the members felt really blindsided by everything that happened and by the members that left because no one ever said anything to them before they decided to leave. Lay, in particular, as the only Chinese member left, had a really hard time because he not only was the only foreign member left, but he had an immense burden with the fact that he had to straddle the line between his loyalty to his country and his loyalty to EXO and SM Entertainment. Lay has always been very grateful for all the opportunities that SM has given him in terms of his life and career so he always wants to be loyal to EXO and the company, but he is constantly having to defend his loyalty and reassure fans that he has no intention of betraying them the same way they felt the rest of the Chinese members did. As the song says, EXO promises that they will always protect EXO-L and make them smile. And now that the rift between Korea and China has happened, Lay has an even harder road to navigate because now he is no longer allowed to participate in activities with EXO because they are a Korean group. So he has been away from the group for more than 3 years now. However, he is still working really hard to make sure that EXO-L's know that his separation is not by choice. The only reason he is keeping his distance from the rest of the EXO members is because of the rules of the Chinese government, and, yet many still see Lay's absence as a betrayal of his loyalty as an EXO member. So he is constantly struggling to prove people wrong, while also following the rules of the Chinese government which discourage him from even mentioning his relationship with anything to do with Korea. To navigate these roadblocks SM has found ways around them, for instance with Lay's solo promotions. Because Lay is not allowed to promote in Korea right now, SM found a way to promote Lay as part of EXO's storyline by partnering with Lay to release an English album and to tie his MVs in with EXO's story. Everything EXO does, including several of Lay's solo releases (but not all of them), tie into the fact that he is a member of EXO -- its SM's way of making sure that even though he might not be able to work with the members right now, that they still make sure to show fans that his storyline and presence as part of EXO is still really important to both Lay and SM. Lay is one of the most famous celebrities in China right now, so everyone wants to work with him. He owns his own record label in China and he produces his own music, as well as music for other artists. Plus, he is, or was, a youth ambassador to China appointed by the government, which means he has a lot of obligations in China. He is considered China's national producer. He is also an actor and he is a spokesperson for a lot of Chinese products and causes -- he is the EXO member with the most endorsement deals. He is also a host of reality programs and is appearing on numerous variety shows in China, so this all keeps him very busy. He is one of the most sought after celebrities in China so he spends a lot of time living in China and away from the other EXO members. Because of his super busy schedule and because of some issues between the Chinese and Korean government, Lay has not been a part of EXO activities for a very long time. Now I am no where near an expert on the topic, and I admit that I only understand a very minor part of what is going on between the Chinese and Korean government, but as I understand it, part of the reason for the ban on Chinese and Korean workers between the two countries is that China is refusing to align itself with the U.S. or South Korea to protect themselves with deployment of the THAAD missile defense system in South Korea. North Korea and China want to get rid of the rocket system that is meant to shoot down a nuclear missile if North Korea were to launch one at South Korea or the U.S. Another reason why China doesn't like the THAAD system is because China and the U.S. don't have the best relationship, so if the U.S. and China become on even worse terms China is afraid the U.S. could also use THAAD against them. China says the THAAD system is just provoking them to actually start a nuclear war, and until they remove it or at least move it back from the South Korean boarder, they will continue their ban on Korean products, workers and the Hallyu wave from working in China and for its native Chinese citizens from working with Korean companies. China feels like the Korean government is taking away its native commodities by allowing Chinese people to work in Korea. The issue is even more complicated than this, but that is one part of it.

Thank you for reaction to this song. It's a very emotional song for EXO and for EXO-L (their fandom name), because this was around the time when 3 of their members officially left the group. It's kind of an open letter to their fans to express their love and gratitude towards them, and to apologize that they're not able to stay as one as they had promised. Lay composed the song, Chanyeol wrote the rap part & Chen wrote the rest of the lyrics with the other members' input as well. Lay wrote the Chinese lyrics, a bit different than the original, but just as good. My bias is Chen, but I know every one of them can sing well. They have different voice colors or tones? The maknae, Sehun (very last one who sang) whom we don't hear often, together with Chanyeol will actually be launched as a subunit in July, so we'll be able to hear more of Sehun's singing or rapping maybe? I hope you react to them as well. The one you thought was lay was actually Xiumin. I think he's the one who can hit the highest note in EXO, higher than Chen & Baekhyun. You were confusing Xiuman(pronounced Shoeman) for Lay. Suho(Exo's leader) is the one singing that you mistook for Chanyeol(the rapper in this song). This song is very emotional and dear to ExoLs. Exo wrote and composed this song to promise ExoLs that they will continue on after losing three of their beloved brothers(Kris Wu, Luhan, and Tao) due to health and treatment issues. This performance is the difference in emotion when performing your own lyrics and composition. Yet another layer and accomplishment to add to Exo's ability that places them above simply being performers and entertainers. Great reaction as always!
