I think you’re the type to appreciate this long ass comment hehe. Some updates for you because this is old 😂 Lay - left their parent agency (SM entertainment) in 2022 but has always said he will always be part of Exo and will always be there when his members need him. He is a massive superstar in China and might possibly be the most famous celeb in the mainland. He set up his own company, Chromosome, has trainees of his own, and does everything from writing, playing instruments, producing. He has a lot of solo albums and singles, his latest is Step an all English album. He is also a well known actor, his 2023 movie No More Bets was the highest grossing film around the world on its opening weekend, beating Barbie and Oppenheimer. That is how huge he is. He can promote in Korea and Japan again, he did a concert there and some of the exo members attended, even the founder of SM, Lee Sooman attended. Baekhyun - he established his own company in 2023 called INB100, and signed both Xiumin and Chen. Basically all their solo works and their sub-unit work (EXO-CBX) are done under this company, but they are still under contract with SM for all their EXO work. Baekhyun is currently THE BEST SELLING SOLOIST OF ALL TIME in South Korean history. He has 4 solo albums and each one is a huge commercial success. The latest one is Hello, World (Pineapple Slice title track) is his first album under his own company and broke his own record for fastest time of crossing 1 million copies sold. He just finished his solo concert Asian tour Lonsdaleite and sold out every show. Kyungsoo (D.O.) - he also established his own company in 2023 called Company SooSoo. He no longer has a contract under SM, but he is still part of the group and works with them almost like a freelancer. He has three solo albums, the most recent one Blossom, is the first album he has released under his own company. He is a very successful and well known serious actor in Korea. Top directors and veteran actors recognize him as not just the typical idol turned actor. He usually takes on unusual roles and steers away from stereotypical romcoms. He has won a lot of the most prestigious acting awards in Korea. He just finished his first solo fancon Bloom tour in Asia, and was so in demand, they added 2nd and even 3rd shows to most cities. He is currently filming for a new drama opposite Ji Chang Wook. Suho - he now has three solo albums and is currently finishing his solo concert tour in Asia. His solo albums are more rock/poprock and he recently learned to play guitar and is showcasing it during the concert tour… He has also been active as an actor recently, with a supporting role in Netflix Drama Behind Your Touch, and a lead role in Crown Prince Disappeared. He just came back from ANTARCTICA he filmed a reality show there!!! Xiumin - he has had one solo album and is currently working on his second album. His first album is very 90s dance/hiphop/synth. Check out Brand New, it’s got a fun choreo. He is also multitalented and has done a few dramas and hosted a reality idol show recently. He is going to be a mentor on a talent show Mr. trot 3. He also started vlogs on youtube where he tries interesting things like making kimchi, etc. it’s a lot of fun. Chen - he has four solo albums, the latest was Door, his first one under INB100. He has been going on fanmeetings and just recently released a couple of ballad singles. If you love emotional power ballads, Chen is the one. He is also an OST king, with many popular k drama OSTs to his name. He doesnt have social media and is a very private person, but recently opened a bubble account where fans can subscribe to get his messages. He has been very communicative there and it’s honestly so heartwarming and wholesome. Chanyeol - like Lay, he is practically a music prodigy he plays so many instruments and can write, produce, do everything in the studio. He has two albums with Sehun (their unit EXO-SC). He released his much anticipated solo album very recently Black Out - if you like 90s/2000s rock grunge you will love this! Please check it ouuuut. He is actually a really good singer, even though non fans only know him as a rapper. He is currently on his solo Asian concert tour. He was recently in the Netflix miniseries hit The Frog. He got a lot of praise for his acting in this role. Definitely unexpected from someone with such a bright, goofy personality. Kai - is currently enlisted in the military. He is serving as a public service officer, therefore he can go home daily and on weekends after work. He will be discharged hopefully by Feb 2025. He has three very successful solo albums. Please watch his videos and Film Kai are works of art, no matter if you are a fan or not… those are required viewing for any music lover. His dancing and love for fashion is insane. He also has a lot of interesting vlogs/ guestings on youtube that showcase his personality that seems opposite from his stage persona. Sehun - he is also currently enlisted as public service officer (together with Kai they are the last two to enlist). He is a huge influence in the fshion scene as Dior brand ambassador, and has a massive following in Asia, particularly in China. Literally any magazine he is on the cover of always breaks records of most sold in China. Hopefully he will be out safely in September… he is also an experienced actor, his latest work was All We Ever Loved and it really showcases his comedic and dramatic skills. 2024 is definitely a year for solo growth, but Suho has mentioned the possibility of winter album at end of the year (im a clown i still believe this will happen). Exo are one of the few kpop groups that actually do proper ballads and are known for their Christmas albums. In 2023, their 10-year old b-side track First Snow went #1 on all korean platforms, and even tiktok. It went viral all over again and was the only boy group song to even hit #1 on Melon 100 in 2023. And charting again this 2024 when winter came around. Their most recent full studio album Exist in 2023, despite very minimal promotion and incomplete members, still broke records left and right. It smashed the 24-hr pre order record on ktown4u (the largest overseas seller of kpop albums and merch), smashing record previously set by Jisoo and Seventeen… Exo may not be that well known to Westerners, but they have an insanely large and loyal (and rich 😂) fan base in Asia and particularly China. This is why to this date, they have the most number of streams of any artist on Melon Korea. Even in YT music Korea they still ranked 10th for most streams in 2024 when they didnt even release anything this year 😂 Everything they do goes number 1 on the largest Chinese platform QQ music (fyi qq has more users than ALL spotify users workdwide combined). You guys do the math 😂 they set so many insane records before kpop and kdrama really became mainstream around the world. They are the real idols’ idol. And to this day, they are still estimated as the kpop group with highest net worth est at US$1 billion. Nope, it’s not the groups you would think…

@ the thing is Yg groups don’t feed into fans delusions coz their artists are free . They have interactions with female dancers and so on. Sm is one of those companies that capitalize on obsessive fans that’s why we hear a lot of saesangs from them . Even hybe is on that route. The thing is I’m not defending one company it’s just from observations.

Chen was the first member to have a baby and got married. Back then when Chen revealed that news, the fandom got fvcked up and some insane fans cancelled him, throw hates on him and worst… even petition for his removal from the group. But what I really admired for that man is he stand still, faced his responsibility and decision with bravery. I am beyond happy that he gotta find someone whom he can share the rest of his life. I hope for the other members too when the right time comes to them. Also, Chen paved the way for this prejudices of idols. They started to faced their reality, and had also announced their marriage and weddings, like BOBBY of Ikon and many more

EXO-CBX was created because -- in 2016 when the group was formed -- Chen, Baekhyun and Xiumin were the only EXO members who didn't have any side projects at the time. They were all in the gym working out together discussing what they should do while everyone else was working on other things, and their trainer suggested they form a sub-unit. So, they took the idea to the company and SM agreed that they would make a good unit. Plus, this sub-unit allowed EXO to have an even bigger Japanese presence because SM had them release Japanese songs and they even had a Japanese concert tour with just their unit. Also, Chen and Xiumin are really good friends because they were the only Korean members in EXO-M, and because Chen and Baekhyun are both main vocalists they are often paired together for projects, so it makes sense they would want to create a sub-unit together. All three of them are very close. When Baekhyun decided to create his own company and become a independent solo artist in 2023, Chen and Xiumin went with him and now Baekhyun's company represents Chen and Xiumin as solo artists, as well as EXO-CBX activities.

EXO actually are first ever kpop group to do a continuous storyline in kpop. So SM after debuting Aespa, they assigned older groups some story as well, TVXQ,Girl Generation, Shinee, they didn’t had continues storyline before. So EXO's storyline is kinda the base of SMCU but story wise, EXO's storyline is totally different, like different universe. There is a hint of crossover in EXO or other groups' newest content, and they did with SuperM as well Suho originally selected to debut with Shinee, but just before their debut Suho had an accident, he actually gave up because he couldn’t practice for months but then again join in and selected as EXO's line up( Shinee, half of EXO and Nct's Johnny all trained together)

Yes, you will discover that all the members of EXO -- and most idols in general -- are actors, and all of them have starred in K-dramas and movies and/or are stage actors. Promoting as a group only takes up a few weeks a year -- on average, Kpop Idols only promote their latest music release on music shows and attend variety shows or do interviews, etc. to promote their newest album or single for about 2 weeks -- so in order to fill their time and continue to make money, all Idols have side projects, which means most idols also spend time as TV and movie actors, musical stage actors, models, Radio DJs, podcast hosts, authors, music producers, songwriters, regular/main cast members on variety shows, etc. Their side projects also are part of their cross promotions as idols. Someone who doesn't know them may watch them in a drama or movie or see them promoting their favorite brand or product, etc., which leads to them discovering their group and music, or the person may be a fan of them as a singer and this makes them want to watch their movie or drama, etc. It's all about getting their name and face out there in as many ways as possible in order to drive sales and viewership of everything they are involved in. The clip where you saw Xiumin cleaning the bathroom because it was so messy was during a reality TV show called "Dangerous Outside the Blanket," which was a Korean TV show where several idols who are known for being introverts were cast on the show together and they essentially spent a few days vacationing together while a film crew followed there every move. Xiumin was the only EXO member on the show, but there were several other Korean celebrities and idols who "lived with him" as part of the cast for the program. For example, the other guy you saw sneaking out of the room was Kung Daniel who is a Kpop solo artist and was a former member of the temporary Kpop boy group Wanna One (formed as part of a survival trainee competition TV show, that was only active from 2017-2019). "Dangerous Outside the Blanket" is just one example of the "side projects" idols and celebrities in Korea participate in as part of the Korean entertainment industry as a way to promote themselves and their groups, etc. It allows the general public who may not follow Kpop groups or the dramas or movies these members are in, to get to know them -- these programs often air on TV during primetime viewing as programs you would watch after coming home from work or school, etc -- which could potentially then make that person want to get to know them more, which could then cause them to become a fan and get them to watch their dramas or movies or get them to listen to their music, etc.

One of the reasons why you haven't heard a whole lot of Xiumin singing or rapping yet is because all you have watched is EXO-K versions of their songs and only a few of their concert performances, etc. In the beginning when EXO was split up into the separate groups, if we wanted to hear the EXO-M members sing or rap we had to watch the EXO-M MVs. Therefore, if you check out some of EXO-M's MVs and content, you will discover that as a member of EXO-M, Xiumin was a lead rapper and he covered most of the same lines and parts as EXO-K's lead/main rapper Sehun. For every EXO-K member, EXO-M had an equal member that covered the same role in each group. That's why EXO-K had 6 members and EXO-M had 6 members. As one of the two Korean members of EXO-M, EXO's Mandarin Chinese sub-unit, Kim Minseok was given the stage name Xiumin because it helps him fit in as a member of EXO-M and it makes him more relatable to their Chinese fans. Kim Minseok is also a very common name in Korea. Therefore, having a stage name also helps distinguish him from all the other Kim Minseoks in the entertainment industry. He was even on a reality show once where they cast several celebrity Kim MinSeoks together, so he asked them to call him Xiumin in order to make it less confusing when they were talking about each other. LOL I actually knew a well-known actor named Kim Minseok and a musician with that name before I knew Xiumin.

Kim JongIn was given the stage name Kai because Kai means opening, as in a door or gateway, in Chinese. As the center of the group, it's his job to be the one who travels across history, time and demotions to connect all the EXO members together. That is also why he was given the superpower of teleportation. He has a Chinese name, even though he is a member of EXO-K, because he is supposed to be the one that brings EXO-K and EXO-M together. It's also why he is often the first member to be shown in their MV teasers or storyline because he is the "opening" of the story. Not only is Kai the main dancer of EXO, but he is literally one of the top two BEST dancers of all dancers in the Kpop industry. (Taemin from SHINee, who happens to be Kai's best friend since trainee days and a fellow member of SuperM, is the other top dancer.) And that's not just a fans opinion, but it's a title given to him by his peers and industry experts. That's also one of the many reasons why he is a member of SuperM. Although Kai has made crop tops famous and was one of the first male idols to wear them, he actually doesn't LOVE to be shirtless or show off his abs as much as people might think. Kai is often shirtless because he is known for his abs and it's become part of his brand. These days it's almost expected of him that he will show off his abs. It has even sort of became part of EXO's storyline. He has literally been on a strict diet and workout regimen for most of his career in order to maintain his abs. If you check that episode of "I live Alone" where Kai was on the show, he shows off his super chic condo and talks a little about his diet. However, in an episode of the variety show Knowing Bros. he talked about how on stage he doesn't mind being shirtless because it is part of the character he embodies, but the minute he steps off stage he becomes extremely self-conscious. During "Tempo" and "Obsession" era when he was wearing crop tops all over the place to perform during music shows and events, etc. he said it caused him to have really bad posture, because the minute he stepped off stage he would slouch to try and cover his stomach. Even though he knows he looks good, as you just saw, Kim JongIn is really shy. Therefore, I think if it hadn't become such a big part of who he is as an idol and model, he probably wouldn't be shirtless very often. Just so you know, the other members of the Padding squad are also idols. Ravi is a former member of the Kpop group VIXX, Timoteo is a former SM trainee when Kai and Taemin were trainees and later left SM and became a member of the Kpop boy group HotShot, Sungwoon is from the Kpop boy group Wanna One, and they didn't include him, but there is one non-celebrity founding member Jung KwonHo, who is a high school friend of Taemin, Kai and Timoteo. All the members of the Padding Squad -- which is so named because of the matching padded jackets (winter jackets) they all got as members of the group -- are all around the same age.

The yellow gloves and white outfit that Sehun is wearing is actually part of his outfit from EXO-SC's MV "What A Life." Sehun's yellow gloves are Louis Vuitton brand. As you just discovered, he was a Louis Vuitton model. Those gloves cost more than most people's entire outfit. LOL And as a testament to Sehun's and EXO's trending power, those gloves sold out really fast after their MV was released.

As you saw, EXO's fan color is "Cosmic Latte" (like the color of a latte coffee) -- Cosmic Latte is said to be the color that is created when you combine all the colors of the stars together. (As otherworldly beings, even EXO's official color is linked to the group's concept.) EXO was one of the first Kpop artists to have a lightstick with bluetooth technology. (Although a lot of newer versions of other groups' lightsticks now also have bluetooth.) At events and concerts, this allows the lighting technicians to have control of the fans lightsticks in order to make it flash and pulse to the music however and whenever they want. In EXO concerts, the lighting technicians will set up whole light shows using the fans lightsticks that corresponds with the performances on stage, which makes fans even more a part of the show. Yes, EXO's lightstick has EXO's official hexagon symbol on top and it's made up of the letters E X O -- the E on the left edge of the hexagon with the X in the center and the shape🛑makes the O -- which is close to EXO's original logo for their debut "Mama" MV. Each of the 9 EXO members also have their own official color, as you will see introduced in EXO's "Power" MV. Most lightsticks are primarily one color -- whatever color represents the group. For example, BigBang's lightstick is yellow and it has a crown on top because BigBang are known as The Kings of Kpop. SHINee's official lightstick is shaped like a diamond, and if you hold it up to a solid surface and look at the reflection the diamond makes, you will see a 5 point star to represent the 5 members of SHINee. SHINee's symbol is a diamond because they SHINe(e) like diamonds and it lights up an aqua blue/teal color because pearl aqua is SHINee's fan color. NCT's lightstick has a big square block on top, which is supposed to look like a building because NCT and their fans are part of the Neo City, and it lights up Pearl Neo Champaign (neon lime green). Red Velvet's lightstick has the letters RV inside a cupcake shaped dome that lights up red. Mamamoo's lightstick is shaped like a green and white radish because moo sounds like the Korean word for radish. BTS' lightstick is the ARMY bomb so it looks like a TNT-type bomb and it lights up purple. BlackPink has a pink hammer. Stray Kids' lightstick has a red and silver compass symbol on top and it glows red because their official color is red, etc. However, what makes EXO's lightstick extra special is that it's multi-colored to represent each of the member's individual colors. And, depending on which member of EXO is on stage at the moment, the lighting technicians often change the color of the lightsticks to the color that represents that member, or goes along with the theme of the stage, etc. (When attending a concert fans now use an app to sink their seat number with your lightstick, so that the lighting technicians can have control of their lightstick.) Although, some group's lightsticks aren't even sticks, but they are bracelets or watch-style lights that you can wear. It all depends on the group concept. And some groups that have been around a long time, or whose company likes to continuously come out with new merchandise, have multiple versions of lightsticks. Each are very unique and specific to the group. Although, in some older Kpop group's performances, from their older concerts or live performances -- such as any EXO live performance that took place before 2015, which was when EXO's official lightstick was released -- you might see that the audience only has plain stick lights or even just glow sticks, because before there were lightsticks, fans brought or were given glow sticks in the group's color. And even before glow sticks were a thing, fans would all wave a balloon that was the color of their group. The disadvantage to waving balloons was that the artists on stage couldn't see the balloons when the lights were off, which is one of the reasons why they now have lightsticks. Fun fact: G-Dragon, BigBang's leader, was the one who came up with the idea for the first lightsticks, because he wanted to be able to see and identify all of the VIPs (BigBang's fans) in the audience. G-Dragon was the one who designed the very first lightsticks and they were so popular among VIPs that other groups started to come up with their own versions of fan lights, which has now become a standard part of the Kpop industry. During award shows and events where multiple groups are present, the group's lightsticks and balloons are, and were, an important way for fans to show their support for their group and to tell everyone around them who they are there to see, etc.

So Exo was the first group to have a story line in kpop (I believe) so SM I guess saw how good it did and decided to incorporate it into all the groups of the company. Exo’s storyline is super in depth, their powers are even incorporated into their choreo. Every MV that comes out brings out the detective fans to figure out more of the storyline Update: Chen has 2 kids now Exo-CBX sued SM for contract violation and for better treatment of kpop groups and I believe even won 3 members of Exo have their own company Lay, Baekhyun (Chen and Xiumin are a part of it too but still in SM as well I believe) and now D.O.

Lay was in all of EXO's MVs until the end of 2016, and he would have been participating in ALL of EXO's activities still today if it wasn't for the political issues between the Korean and Chinese government, which prevents him from doing so. He did leave SM Entertainment in 2022 -- when his contract was up after 10 years -- but he is always the first to tell people that if EXO ever wants or needs him for anything he will always be there for them. Again, you have seen almost nothing of Lay in any of EXO's content so far because you have only checked out EXO-K content and you haven't watched the videos with EXO-M that would highlight Lay's role in the group. Plus, Lay has participated in very little to do with EXO for almost 8 years, so unless you are checking out the hundreds of things he is involved in as a solo artist in China, you won't really even know that Lay even exists. Unfortunately, the political climate between Korea and China was only a little better for a short time. However, since this guide was made, China's Idol culture has become even more restrictive after the election of their new president. Case in point, with Lay's recent solo comeback with his song "Psychic" this was the first time we saw him promoting in Korea in a very long time. He has even promoted a Korean version of the song on music shows in Korea and he also just was in Korea for his concert tour. In order to avoid any conflict between China and Korea, his new album is an All-English album, just like most of his solo releases when he was under SM. Although there are still several obstacles in his way to being able to work with EXO, I have seen rumors that next year when all the members have finished their military service that EXO will have a comeback with all 9 members and Lay said he was looking forward to promoting with EXO again. Lay is a megastar in China, literally one of the biggest celebrities in China today. The reason why he is so big in China now, I think is essentially a product of the fact that he could no longer promote with EXO. He first started to do some solo work in China while he was still participating in EXO activities, but at that time he was mostly famous in China because of EXO. When the political tensions between Korea and China ramped up, he decided that if he wanted to continue his career, he needed to really focus everything he had in China. That's when he started to establish himself as a solo artist in China and to begin to build his career as a producer, singer, dancer, actor, model and all-around entertainer. You should check out Lay's official lyric video for his song "Jiu," a song on his East album, which was released after he announced his departure from SM. This song is evidence that he has not left EXO and that he still considers himself part of the group, as every word of the song is a tribute to EXO. I have also read that on Webo (the Chinese internet server) he mentioned how he was working out a deal with SM that could possibly allow him to still continue to do projects with EXO in the future. (I mean it's possible, afterall that's essentially the deal that Baekhyun, Xiumin, Chen and D.O. have. They have moved their solo promotions to other companies, but they still participate in things with EXO, which is under SM. Lay probably just has a few more stipulations than the other member.) I mean, SM has been supporting Lay in everything he has been doing so far, including endorsing him when he started his idol trainee company Chromosome in China. And I don't think there is any bad blood or uneasy feelings between Lay and SM, so anything is possible. As mentioned, Lay's hiatus from EXO is not something he has chosen, but it's something that has sort of been forced upon him by the government. When China first began cracking down on their citizens working in Korea around 2016 -- as a political protest over South Korea's alignment with the U.S. and China's support of North Korea, etc. -- there were rumors that the Chinese government was threatening to revoke the citizenship of any mainland native Chinese person who continued to do business with a Korean company and lived outside of China. This rule would have prevented Idols, such as Lay, from visiting family and doing business in China, etc. The only way for them to avoid this from happening was for them to come back to China right away and stop doing business with their Korean companies. I don't know if this was really true or if it was just a rumor, but that is what I heard. Which would explain why some Chinese Idols don't feel any pressure to stop working in Korea because they have nothing to lose if they don't have family or a life in China or they aren't mainland Chinese citizens, etc. Yes, there are lots of Chinese Idols still working in Korea. However, these idols don't have the connections to the Chinese government the way Lay and other idols do. Many of those Chinese idols' careers don't depend on being able to promote or live in China and many Chinese idols don't have close family living in mainland China or they are not from mainland China, which is why they have more immunity from the restrictions placed on Chinese citizens. For example, SM Entertainment group NCT-Dream's Chinese members don't work very much in China and most of WayV's members are not from mainland China. That is also why SM has created Label V in order to make it possible for WayV to release music in China and its why WayV distances themselves from NCT whenever they promote in China. Lay's whole career is tied to being able to work and live in China and he is closely connected to the Chinese government as an ambassador of youth, so he has to tread lightly when it comes to how he conducts himself and who he chooses to associate with, etc. He can't afford to be blacklisted in the Chinese entertainment industry. For a long time, Lay was even discouraged from mentioning EXO by name in TV shows and interviews, but he always finds subtle ways to make it clear that being a member of EXO, and his EXO brothers, are always very important to him. We finally got to see Lay in an EXO project in 2021 -- the first time since 2016 (besides his brief solo appearance in EXO's "Tempo" MVs in 2018) -- with EXO's "Don't Fight The Feeling" MV, but he really didn't get to work with EXO because of the pandemic, etc. Everything he did for that MV was done remotely and independently and inserted into the song and MV. Lay started out learning how to dance as a trainee when he signed with SM at the age of about 17. According to him, at that time he wasn't a very good dancer and it took him a lot of hard work and time to get to the level that he's at today. Now he has become one of the BEST dancers in China that EVERYONE looks up to. Currently his favorite style of dance that he has been focusing a lot of his training on is Krump. Lay is regarded as an industry expert that pretty much all other dancers and musicians look up to -- he has even been credited with making Krump a mainstream dance style in China, and he is one of China's leading experts when it comes to Krump. However, he started out by learning popping and locking as a trainee with SM. Because of Lay's drive to constantly be learning new things, he is always striving to learn as much as possible and to be as diverse as possible about all styles of dance and cultures. Lay is such a good dancer because he literally is in the dance studio practicing for 6 hours EVERYDAY. (In an episode of Street Dance of China 4 in 2021, he specifically said "I practice for 6 hours every day." And he meant he does it regardless, no matter how busy he is or what he has going on. He even finds time to practice during filming for reality shows that have nothing to do with dance.) I have seen in a documentary where he starts his day around 4 a.m., he gets done with his schedule of events around 9 p.m. and then he spends from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. in the dance studio with his dance mentor dancing. That's also why he was given the title of the nation's producer by the Chinese government, and why he has been a mentor/dance instructor and main PD for several Idol trainee survival competition shows in China. (These are programs similar to American Idol, where trainees compete to be chosen to become members of a new idol group.) He is pretty much considered an expert when it comes to dance and performance, and he is beginning to gain the respect of songwriters, composers and music producers from all over the world. He is who everyone, especially in China, looks to as an example of what it takes to be an Idol. He is literally considered one of the most successful celebrities in China.

Suho in Korean means guardian, so Kim JunMyeon was given the stage name Suho because he is supposed to be the guardian of EXO. Yes, just because Suho is one of the weakest dancers among a group of very good dancers, does not make him a bad dancer, it just means the other members' dance skills are that much more impressive. SM Entertainment as a whole is known for having some of the top dancers in the entire industry, including EXO's Kai and SHINee's Taemin, who are literally considered the top two best dancers in all of Kpop. Therefore, even SM's worst dancers are better dancers than most dancers. One of the main reasons why Suho was a trainee for 7 years was because he originally started out training to be a member of SHINee. (SHINee is a legendary 2nd generation 5-member group under SM, who everyone in the Kpop industry now looks up to and respects. They have been in the industry for more than 16 years and are still going strong today both as a group and as solo artists.) However, right before SHINee was to debut in 2008, Kim JunMyeon (Suho) injured his knee and he couldn't train for their debut showcase, so SM decided to debut SHINee without him. He ended up having to wait 4 more years, while SM worked on creating EXO and preparing the group for debut, before he debuted as the leader of EXO. (He was the first member to be chosen to become a part of EXO, which is another reason why he was made the leader of the group.) But, by all accounts, this worked out for the best because he became the leader, and as the other EXO members say, he was born to be a leader. If he had stayed a member of SHINee he never would have become a leader, because Onew -- who is the leader of SHINee -- is 2 years older than Suho, and at the time of SHINee's debut it was pretty much a given that the oldest member would automatically be the leader. However, 4 years later when EXO debuted, the rules within the industry had kind of changed and it was no longer a hard and fast rule that the oldest would be the leader. Case in point, Xiumin is the oldest EXO member and, yet, Suho became the leader. Being a trainee for 7 years isn't that uncommon. If you start to really look into it, you will find a lot of Idols who have trained for a very long time before they debuted. However, it all depends on how talented someone is or how much experience they have had before becoming a trainee as to how long they train. Some idols only train for a few weeks or a few months, whereas others could take years and they may be on the verge of giving up when the company finally decides they are ready to debut. And some trainees may never debut and end up leaving the company or industry. Unfortunately, just because you are a trainee doesn't guarantee you will debut. A lot of it is pure talent and luck combined with sheer dedication. For example, Kai tained for 6 years before he debuted and Johnny from NCT trained for 9 years. Although, Johnny -- who is Korean-American, from Chicago -- trained for 9 years because he was only a trainee part time. Johnny's parents only allowed him to spend summers in Korea, so he could only train for about 3 months when he was on summer break from school. Therefore, although Johnny was a trainee for 9 years, his trainee period, compared to other idols who trained full-time, was actually only about 3 years. Yes, in Suho's musical "The Man Who Laughs," he is actually portraying the literary character that The Joker from Batman is based off from. The character he is playing is supposed to be slightly mad, so if you think he looked crazy in that clip, that's because he was. Suho got many accolades for his character in this play.

3:54 There's a rumored 7 year curse; most groups don't make it past 7 years, cause that's when lots of contracts end, and the group disbands when members decide to leave/the company just decides to disband. SM has this nasty habit of not disbanding groups, BUT they instead stick them in the basement and never promote them as a group, only as solo artists if ever~ Another facet of the 7 year curse, particular to boy groups, is the mandatory enlistment; fanbases were known to take a massive hit when the bulk of a boy group enlisted and group promotions died down. These enlistments also often sync up with contracts ending because of average ages of these idols when they debut versus when they have to absolutely enlist.

5:57 Just some perspective about how serious China was/is about this Hallyu ban: Almost no South Koreans singers or actors were allowed to promote in China for years~ And lots of Chinese idols (except those from Hong Kong) were pretty much forbidden from even flying to South Korea. [That's clearly let up~] EXO was one of the few South Korean groups to maintain a positive association with the general Chinese population, despite not stepping foot in China for promotions; this is largely to do with how beloved Lay became in China. Lots of film projects were affected by the ban. A few EXO members had their projects' releases shelved for years because they were Chinese/South Korean co-productions. We only got Suho's How Are You Bread and Sehun's Catman after years when tensions started to lessen. Sehun's Dear Archimedes has never been released!~~~ [How Are You Bread filmed in 2016 but wasn't released until 2020; it had been so long that Suho requested to redo the OST because he didn't want to release a song he recorded that long ago cause he had improved as a singer since then~] An entire character was edited out of Luhan's drama in China called Fighter of the Destiny, because the actor portraying him was South Korean.

I think listening to their music videos chronologically would be better as you get to see their music evolution ❤ However, if ever do start from their pre-debut songs which are What is Love and History, then debut which is MAMA. Also, take note that they have the EXO-K and M versions, too! If you have the time, i think it's worth checking out the EXO-M version after the EXO-K MV of MAMA and What is Love specifically (and only) because in these K version, only the 6 korean members sing, but in the M ver, you'll get to hear the other korean members with Chen and Luhan (the Chinese member who left, he used to be a main vocal in EXO-M, his skills are on par with Suho in EXO-K :))

Unfortunately, the fact that Chen is married with children -- he has 2 little girls now -- and still a member of an idol group doesn't sit well with a lot of fringe fans.* When it comes to the Korean public there are different standards for what it means to be an idol. Therefore, he and his family have gotten a lot of backlash from anti-fans in the past. The group has been boycotted and some people have even demanded that he be kicked out of EXO. That's why you hardly ever see anything about his private life mentioned anywhere. However, being married as an idol is generally looked at favorably by most international fans. *Notice how Chen got married the same year that his first daughter was born, which means his girlfriend was pregnant before they were married. I'm not saying the pregnancy was an accident, I believe they just chose to start a family before getting married. I think they had already planned on getting married, life just happened in the meantime. (Why I mention this, is because this may be why Chen gets a little more backlash from the Korean public as an idol, because he didn't follow the "proper" order of things.) There are actually more Kpop idols who are married with kids than you think. Changmin from the SM Entertainment group TVXQ got married in 2020 and his son was born in 2022 and he's still an active group member. Taeyang from the former YG Entertainment group BigBang got married in 2018 and his son was born in 2021. That's not to say it hasn't also caused them controversy, but if you're strong enough to fight it, it's possible to have a family and still be an idol. Although, it's not that common. It's just an unfortunate part of the Kpop industry and idol culture. Because they are called "Idols" the industry is designed to make it so fans idolize them and they are held to an almost impossible standard. As part of that, idols are meant to be pure and perfect and they are only supposed to be devoted to their fans, etc. EXO is the group that started 3rd generation (2012-2019), and, unfortunately, third generation began the era where the Kpop industry sort of insulated them and made it appear as if they never interact with anyone of the opposite sex. If you notice, most of the time whenever pretty much any third generation or younger group or artist, is around someone of the opposite sex, we hardly ever see the other person's face or see them interacting together. Third generation was when the Kpop industry decided to take the Idol image up to the next level and make it appear as if the idols were solely devoted to their fans and that they never have any outside distractions. To see the difference, take a look at some of the second generation (2000-2011) idol groups. (For reference first gen. is anyone who debuted from 1996-1999/2000.) Second gen. is way different from all the other generations. Which is why second gen. feels so much more open and free. This was when the Kpop industry really hit its stride and this era was a lot more about the interactions between the groups and how it was just one big happy family. With second generation they were all just groups and artists, it didn't matter what company they were from or what their music style was or whether they were a girl group or a boy group, they were just all part of the same industry and everyone got along. We very rarely even talked about what company a group was from back then, because it didn't matter. Second generation has always been the era where it was/is common practice for male groups to have girls in their MVs and as their backup dancers, etc. Second generation fans are used to the fact that they interact with girls and women all the time, so we have no problem with them having girls in their MVs or them dating (to a certain extent), etc. After all, during second gen. era, they had reality TV shows like "We got Married" where idols and celebrities would be paired up with an idol or celebrity of the opposite sex and they would spend several weeks filming content as a married couple. The whole point of the show was for them to live as if they were a real married couple. The show gave viewers and idols a glimpse into what it would be like if they were really married. Granted, these were all fake pairings and everyone knew they weren't in a real relationship, so this isn't quite the same as an idol dating in real life, but a program like this would be pretty hard to pull off in today's third gen. and younger era. This just goes to show you how things have changed. Third generation is where everything become more exclusive and it mattered what company a group or artist was from. It became all about a group's popularity and how they had to be better than everyone else. Everything became much more about cliques and it's more about an appearance of competitiveness and the importance of someone's status and rank within the industry. It became about who is better than who. It's very much reflective of society in general these days. Third gen. started the trend of always having to prove themselves and to show their worth by being better than everyone else. Where second gen. doesn't have to prove anything anymore, their popularity and standing doesn't waver just because they aren't the top seller with their last comeback or they didn't win every award under the sun. (I mean all those things are great and it's meaningful when they win, but that's not what second gen. are all about.) You can even see a difference in their fandoms. Second gen. fandoms get along with each other and they are friends with all the fandoms. If you were a fan during second gen.'s heyday then you know all the second gen groups and artists, and even if you aren't a super fan of a curtain group or artist, you probably still are a fringe fan. Where third generation and younger fandoms are much more exclusive, and they more often are competing with each other to prove who is better. For people who didn't get into Kpop until more recently, you see a lot less mixing of fandoms. For example, it almost feels taboo to say you're a fan of BTS and EXO in the same sentence without feeling like you need to qualify that statement by letting people know you have more love or passion for one group over the other, etc. Unfortunately, the industry has changed, but it really explains why you see and feel such a difference with second generation groups and artists compared to third and fourth generation, etc.

The backlash against Chen for marrying and having a child with his wife was so intense that they put him on a hiatus. Some psychos were protesting outside of SM with destroyed albums, burning his photocards, demanding he leave the group, and even threatening his wife and daughter. He's slowly come back over the years but the hate against him is still there, but his group have made it VERY clear that they won't tolerate their fans treating Chen and his family badly. This type of hatred from fans actually happens a lot and it's extremely concerning...

SM entertainment did have a storyline throughout their artists and it started with aespa. When lee sooman (the founder of sm) left sm, they no longer do that anymore. Theres barely any mention of kwangya in the artists that once have them except aespa cause its a part of their storyline but they barely mention it in any of their songs this year
@resurgingflameКүн бұрын
It's worth to know that EXO is the pioneer of storyline concept in kpop. Storyline in an MV/album? That's not smthing new. But continuous storyline that connects the MV, album, music & even solo stuffs? EXO was the first one to do it & become the trendsetter in kpop. Lee Soo Man himself was the one who created EXOplanet concept for them. He's inspired by the news of 12 UFO sighting in Korea back in the 90s. After seeing the success of the implementation of storyline concept with EXO, SM THEN made the same thing with Aespa, & then made Kwangya as a shared universe for their groups. So never take it the other way around as if Kwangya was created first & then EXOplanet was made after that. Bcus I warn u, most EXO-L don't like that😂 it's one of the group & fandom's pride. & it feels like SM just took it as their creative approach without giving EXO the proper treatment they deserve for bringing in that success.
