Man... what a great collection of trailers these were. The art, the complexity of the story, the scale of the ships, the atmosphere... The Mass Effect OGs are really in a league of their own. I can't stress enough how excited I am for this game, and I haven't been this excited for a game since my huge disappointment with Mass Effect Andromeda.

ME 2 (the first one I played) was the first game that made me really care about game characters as if they were real people. To this day I am still amazed at how good these characters and their personal stories were. I mean, the injustice Tali suffered from her people made me so angry at the time, that I really wanted to punch them all. 😂

I think you can 'create' your own character. If that is what you mean. You have three choices of "species" for lack of a better word. And you can likely be male or female etc. As for NPC that is your companions, they are always predetermined in games. I have high hopes for this game. The guys behind it has credence and long term experience. But it does look very ambitious, so I tamper my hype a bit.

Tom isn't the main character, he's one of the companions I think. The protagonist is "Jun" who's similar to Shepard in that they have some fixed details but you pick their gender and some other details.

Not wanna be picky, but I can't help myself. When in your story science reaches the point where mech suits become reality then you might want to rethink putting a gatling gun and missile launcher on it's back. As it would surely have far more high tech weaponry at it's disposal. Railgun, energy beam or go oldschool Halo tech and do an energy sword or plasma rifle. Please let your imagination run wild, every month games are released that play it safe and those tend to be forgotten quite easily.
