Nice tip! You see the same issue sometimes with Zippos as well
@samgenic10 ай бұрын
I have the opposite issue. I don't overfill the lighter, but have difficulty in maintaining a steady flame for more than 20 seconds - the flame gets smaller gradually and dies down eventually. I repacked the cotton several times and tried, without success. I contacted Exotac, who suggested that i leave a small length of wick at the bottom protruding from the cotton. However, that didn't solve the issue either
@g-m-b66729 ай бұрын
Also have this problem. Light mine and flame starts well but gradually shrinks whilst flickering!
@tikkidaddy2 ай бұрын
I had the same problem one time. So I changed the internal consumables completely and this time I DID over fill it. Left it sitting closed for 10 minutes, turned it upside down, opened it, put extra fuel in a small jar, which is what I do when filling anyway for later storage back in the can. Wiped it off, ZZIPP. ...done. No explosions etc. Now if it gets low I dump the occasional capful in the bottom if needed. Reality is if you actually use it you gotta keep it filled. But it doesn't WASTE fuel like our beloved ZIPPO. At a $1 an ounce, thats expensive

I have found it to be a horrible lighter. First the seal never gets tight. Second I have to flick the wheel a dozen times just to get it to light. I have used a zippy for years and never had this issue. I was very excited to get this lighter but between the fact that it leaks and that my thumb is soar ever time I use it because I have to flick it over a dozen time to light it is a huge waist of money.

Thanks for the awesome tip--I will do this tonight to get mine working better. I also put a couple of sections of Ranger Bands (small bike inner tube ) on the mid and end point of the lighter. That way I have some more grip and it keeps the bottom portion sealed, which reduces fuel evaporation. Also, the bands can be used as a firestarter.

Does anyone have a fix. So my Titanlight wick is almost bone dry, even though the lighter is filled with fluid and the wick was routed correctly. And when i open up the bottom cap the fluid shoots out of the wick and sides. Is this normal or can i change sth. ? Thanks a lot

I don't think that is normal. Have you found a solution? If not, you may want to reach out to EXOTAC on this one.

Hey, have you tried repacking rayons inside? Some oil lighters have poorly packe rayon in them preventing fuel absortion. Try pull out every rayon, spread them until they are become very fluffy, and then repacking them.

Seems odd. Huge lighter...but you can only put a small amount of fuel in it...
@drcoolit3 жыл бұрын
Quantity isn't important if you're investing in this lighter as a survival tool. It's very efficient (so you don't NEED much fuel). This set of videos (Zippo-Style 'Survival' Lighter Long Term Kickoff) shows just how long a little bit of fuel will last in this lighter. As someone above mentions about Zippo holding 4ml vs 3ml for the Exotac, this set of videos shows that the fluid still evaporates in a short period of time in the Zippo.
@MatterIsNotSolid3 жыл бұрын
@@drcoolit Thats a ridiculous argument. Make it smaller then and hold the same amount of fuel.
@drcoolit3 жыл бұрын
@@MatterIsNotSolid Why don't you ask the company why they made the design of this lighter as they did if that bothers you. Assuming though that the absorbent material they use in this lighter is similar or identical to that used in lighters such as the Zippo, I can only assume that in theory if the carrying capacity per unit of absorbent material is the same, then the Exotac lighter SHOULD hold more than a smaller lighter. The company may be erring on the side of caution (such as this spillover issue) given how litigious the USA is, in suggesting filling it with a lower amount. I am considering ordering one of these lighters and I may well experiment with just how much fluid it can hold without leaking. I can add a post later as a follow-up if I decide to do that.
@MatterIsNotSolid3 жыл бұрын
@@drcoolit I have many items from this company. I would have bought this lighter if not for the ridiculous amount fuel it holds. As it is, I ended up purchasing a martac lighter (peanut xl) with the same basic idea that holds vastly more than this lighter. They need to go back to the drawing board on this. I could help them with a very simple suggestion. A screw cap designed to go over the wick when not in use.
@drcoolit3 жыл бұрын
@@MatterIsNotSolid Your idea of a cap of some kind over the wick is along the lines of something I was thinking where a "cap" of sorts was glued to the actual upper cap of the lighter so that when you put the cap back on, this tube like device would envelop the wick keeping fluid contained, at least within the tube (it probably would leak out though once you re-opened the lighter.). Another thing I was considering was introducing a very small hole (1mm diameter?) in the top of the lighter just a short distance from the wick opening. People keep talking about "pressure build up" (I suspect related to equilibration of volatile components of the fluid inside the lighter, possibly augmented by warm ambient temperatures) and oddly they say small lighters (like your Maratac) don't "leak" because the insert pulls out of the case and that gap allows for pressure gradients that don't cause leaks. The small hole MIGHT allow such a pressure equalization but I've never heard of anyone trying ANY of these ideas (yours or mine). I take it your XL doesn't leak at all? Do you think the brass version (ca $40) is overpriced? Any opinion on the cheaper aluminum knock-offs (Amazon)? I have to admit, I'm on the fence re the Exotac lighter. Some people swear by it, others AT it. At the same time, if EDC is your goal, the XL is clearly more out of the way than the Titan. There may be one clear area where the Titan shines though -- it floats! (I think even with fuel but don't quote me) That XL -- if it goes overboard, well, how much is it to you to go after it?

This lighter is easy to fill, easy to clean, has space for extra flints, ZIPPO flint works great, takes a #35 size fuel and heat resistant o ring and an 8 inch wick. I've had one sitting around filled for over 2 years that I added 20 drops of ZLF to after original fueling and checks. The amount of wick that protrudes into the combustion chamber can be made shorter the same a ZIPPO wick can.

The Zippo holds 4.0ml of fuel. I've been looking into buying an Exotac but can't find any significant strong points over my Zippo except the fact the Exotac has an "O-ring" sealed cap. Just recently I stumbled across a soft tight fitting seal for the Zippo insert, it takes the place of the thick felt that is covering the cotton material at the bottom which significantly if not fully eliminates fuel evaporation the only exposed fuel saturated material in the Zippo would be the wick, these rubber inserts were a $1 and change each. With that all being said, I think I'll invest in an Exotac Titan light anyways, besides their idiosyncrasies, which is pretty much unavoidable, the Exotac is a pretty cool piece of engineering.🇺🇸👍✌️

i fill my Zippo until it drips on the floor, i never had this problem in my life. this is obviously a design flaw from Exotac -and you dont call them out because you are paid from them- . 3ml is nothing in fuel and a lighter this big is a waste of space if you cant fill it properly. edit: new information

Most expensive piece of junk ever. It lights one time, never relights unless you let it sit for several minutes. Once that initial flame is gone you will flick and flick forever without getting a spark, already changed out the wick, drill the hole larger, changed flints adjusted everything and nothing works. I would rather have a ferro rod than be stuck with this piece of junk in the woods.

Turn the lighter upside down BEFORE you open, if there's fuel in the cap, put it back in the Titanlight. Wipe the lighter off...which BTW is also ZIPPOs advice if you over fill their lighter...WIPE the lighter and your hands off. Don't overfill. Simple.
