In 1974/5 I was preparing to go on exercise to Malaya with my Infantry Platoon when Tinea broke out in the Platoon. We only had a few days left before we embarked and anyone who could not pass a medical on the day of departure would not go! The medic was flat out prescribing Prescription medication but it seemed to be having no effect that I could determine on my daily inspections. So I instructed the Medic to place bowls of Portassium Permanganate in the entrance to the showers and every soldier had to enter and exit the showers by walking through the bowls. I instructed that I would place on charge any soldier who I found that did not have "brown feet" when I did my inspection. [Portassium Permanganate stains the skin brown]. Within two days we had settled the Tinea problem and all embarked for the exercise. To this day, i still rely on Portassium Permanganate for all manner of issues - far better than any prescription medication.

One thing to have on hand for poison ivy/oak is Arm and Hammer Super Washing Soda. It's basically (chemistry pun intended...) sodium carbonate, and it's sufficiently alkaline to break down oils (such as urushiol), but not too caustic as to harm the skin (as long as it's not on the skin too long). Mix it with a little dish soap and warm water, and you have a good solution (yeah...another chemistry pun) to a potentially bad situation.

@disposablehero49114 жыл бұрын
What would be the concentration you would use? Thanks for the info.
@DaveSmith-cp5kj Жыл бұрын
@@disposablehero4911 The concentration is arbitrary, the point is that it is easier to dispense drops with a dropper accurately than powder on a spatula. So for example dissolve 0.5g in a vial of water. You now know to dispense 50mg (0.05g) which is 1/10 of 0.5 gram, you need to dispense 1/10 of the vial. That said for survival purposes it is kind of unnecessary. We already have the qualitative test which he demonstrated which is the how darkly tinted the water is.

Great vid, thank you! In some countries like India, PP is used to disinfect vegetables - by soaking them in a very light solution (like the 1st solution you made here). I use that same light PP solution, to soak my salad lettuce. A tiny amount of PP on the end of a flat toothpick, is plenty. There has been a lot of contaminated lettuce products, here in the US. And you are correct, the 1st solution you made, is too dark a color for drinking - you should just barely see the color. Remember, cold water takes 30-60 minutes to disinfect; always go longer to be sure. PP can be carried in super-tough and leak-proof soda-bottle preforms, Amazon has them. A preform filled with PP, should be in every emergency kit.

I discovered Potassium Permanganate as an option for water purification after starting my search looking at dry "bleach" options. What's great about this stuff is that it is shelf stable (if stored correctly) indefinitely, and a 2 oz bottle will treat enough water for probably 10 people for over a 10 years. It's a much better option than Sodium Dichloroisocyanurate for those two reasons alone and bonus mixing it with Glycerin will ignite thermite. The downside is basically just that you have to be careful with this stuff. I love that the color change is so drastic that it can be used to tell how much to use, but you DO have to know this and it's not as simple as tablets. If you are unsure, spend the money on the water treatment tablets. In an emergency, you won't regret spending the money.

laurie williams me thinks some are in comment jail and not no it . Trickery on a grand scale. Yes I’m sure that we the people are paying for our censorship as well, seems I have a whole platoon assigned to me . When I comment, or even look at the comments I notice some some snarky remarks that was allegedly made months ago

In high school chemistry class we mixed it up with household bleach or ammonia (forgot which) and made a nitro glycerin type of paste that we painted on surfaces. One dry if it was touched it would explode. Pretty neat.

You can also use sugar with it and a little friction from a stick to start a fire

I would put my sugar and PP mix into a tiny little ziplock bag. This would prevent you breathing in any dust released while you are bashing it AND contain the granules so it doesn't shoot all over the place. Of course the fire reaction will melt the tiny bag but that's not a problem. Extra fuel for the fire.
