I've been on that Lago Ranco vineyard and it's astonishingly beautiful, in the northern part of the Chilean Patagonia, in a cliff on the border of the lake facing west. Just gorgeous

I haven't had much SB as of late being in the land of Furmint, Juhfark, etc. But Sauvignon Blanc is a great cultivar and can be both fun and "serious". I tend to gravitate to the more mineral or savory styles. Alto Adige, Friuli the Loire, Bordeaux are my go to/favorite regions as the QPR is pretty good. At this point in time I think that interesting and non-generic SB from New Zealand is a bit over-priced compared to alternatives from other regions. Austrian ones are great too, though with limited production they aren't always so easy on the wallet. 😅 I should try a Hungarian one and see what it's like. Great video and well organized tasting.

🙏🙏🙏 Austria does an amazing job indeed. I haven’ come across a really impressive Hungarian one - then again you don’t need SB there!

Thanks for the tip on Miani. I live just a 1 hour drive from them vineyard and had never heard of them! Will have to see if they sell any wine on the premises because it appears all online shops have nothing in stock.

He doesn’t sell from the cellar door (it’s a garage) and doesn’t take visitors

Hmm was considering stopping by next summer but guess not. You could try Jermann which is also in the area and highly aclaimed (Antinori estate if I remember)

Dr. how are you finding some of these wines? I can’t find them in the US. The SB from Casa Silva is impossible to purchase

I get sent a lot of samples. I think Casa Silva is working on changing importers. Their Carmenere’s are available though

Great video. I’d say 90% of the SBs we drink are from Loire. I really enjoy vines grown in silex. I typically don’t spend much on wines but occasionally will. Seems like we drink a number from Pascal Jolivet.

If you can get your hands on them, you absolutely need to try Sancerre wines from Delaporte. They make 3 whites and 3 reds, and a great rosé. Their whites and reds come in with an entry level "Chavignol", a middle priced "Silex", and a high end single vineyard. They're all incredible, and the high end versions are spectacular, around 25€ at the domain, and can beat some great Burgundies in a blind tasting.

Got a Sancerre from J.P.Balland, grande cuvee 20’ just recently. One of the best performing Whites I’ve had this year if not longer (especially considering the offer @30€, norm~40€. Cheers

Ohhhh Sancerre and that price usually delivers hard!

@@drmatthewhorkey was really impressed by its subtlety and burgundian like elegance. Better than Comte Lafond grande cuvee pricewise (was a 21’ though and I know by experience that the good SB’s need 4-5y). Got any must try recommendation like JPB?

Nearly all SB I drink these days is Sancerre or Pouilly Fume, with an occasional white Bordeaux. I have to credit NZ SB as being the category that launched my wine enthusiasm, though, even if I don’t drink them nearly as much as I used to. They’ll always hold a special place with me.

I have totally got into the Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc recently. I miss the original Cloudy Bay (pre 1994). This comes closest to the explosiveness of that wine, not surprising because it is owned by one of the original winemakers?

I totally get what mean if you say "SB is a save bet in a restaurant". When it comes to the selection of wines, I clearly miss Südsteiermark (southern Styria). I mean you named it in the video. Many say it is the best region for SB.

Great tasting! I live at the coast where seafood is available in abundance. Sauvignon blanc pairs well with clams and other shellfish. I had SB's from Chili and New-Zealand, and as they are good, I prefer Loire SB a tad more. I got tired of the sometimes too perfumed NZ sauvignon blanc. My daily drinker is Villebois Touraine SB. It ticks all the SB boxes and it's even has some depth at 9 euro. Their Sancerre (22 euro) and Pouilly-Fumé (19 euro) are excellent as well. Have you covered other appellations in the Loire? Probably as they have 63 appelations. Interesting might be the revival of Muscadet.

Sauv Blancs are generally at the bottom of my white wines choices, especially from NZ. Those versions are harder for me to get past the cat pee aromatics. But…2 years ago we had a few from both Chile and South Africa and I am a fan of those. But like you, nothing beats Sancerre for single varietal SBs. But I do enjoy Bordeaux styles, blended with Semillon. Another great tasting…thanks!

Go Reyneke! Go South Africa! That is an excellent wine; I had a 2017 earlier this year and it was absolutely glorious! Always disappointed when I don't see a Constantia Sauvignon Blanc in an international line-up. Klein Constantia's estate Sauvi B is a beautiful wine at a reasonable price relative to the quality.
