Cactus Caffeine

Күн бұрын

This is a project that I have been wanting to do for years. Now that plumbing had been fixed in this section of my garden, I can finally work on expanding one of my desert gardens. The biggest challenge will be the intense sun and heat that plants here will be exposed to. Thus, I have to be careful with the cactus and other desert plants that I will select for this garden.

Beautiful garden, Ana! Carmen Whitehead recommended I check out your channel since I’m new to Las Vegas and trying to figure out what to do with my patio and very small yard. After seeing Carmen’s and your cacti and succulents, I’m thinking they will be the way to go, but I think only in pots. Looking forward to viewing more of your videos and also checking out Little Baja for their beautiful pottery!

Hi Susan. Welcome here. Carmen is so sweet and she has a green thumb for house plants (which I don’t) haha. If you are planning outdoor gardening, I found cacti to be the most resilient. But I also grow roses. They just need more TLC than cacti. Little Baja is an excellent shop. Another one is Outdoor Living at Henderson. They both have talavera pots. Good luck!

I have a dog and I guess he learned not to mess with cactus cause he hasn’t been spiked. But I have a fence around my 3 gardens with cactus planted in the ground. That keeps him away from the spines and prevents him from digging. 🙂

That is so much nicer than what used to be there. I'm thinking that the morning and afternoon sun shining on that wall and reflecting down on the ground will keep that spot a lot warmer in winter, so you can grow more cold sensitive plants there, provided they can stand the summer heat. The pattern of large, light colored rocks and small dark pebbles reminds me of the dry streams you see in old Japanese gardens.
@CactusCaffeine
@CactusCaffeine 3 жыл бұрын
That is true. The wall radiates heat so these cacti will benefit from that during winter. Very good analysis. I’m glad the rock arrangement makes sense to you. Hahaha. I’m an amateur but I watch a lot of Laura Eubank’s videos. 😉

Hi Ana - your fake Octillo is an alluaudia procera plant native to Madegascar and is a most precious addition to your cacti collection. In native conditions it grows into a tree. It is one of the plants the lemur animal can leap to & from without getting their tender “little fingers poked!

Awesome, an Echinomastus johnsonii would enjoy this hot and sunny place ;) But these are very expensive cacti. That’s why I find your decision good to plant your own plants in the ground instead of new ones:).

That is an excellent choice. I wanted to have a California fire barrel cactus (not sure if that is the same as what you suggested) but the ones that I found were way over my budget! Maybe in the future. There are still spaces. 😄

Hello, It's been 2 years since you made a video on growing using LED lights so can you please tell me if you were able to produce any cactus flowers using this lite because I just bought the new version with the dimmer and want to use it for my 6 Easter cactuses and a few others. Would I be able to get them to flower or should I supplement with daylight as I get hardly any sun where I have to keep my plants.
@CactusCaffeine
@CactusCaffeine 3 жыл бұрын
I only use growlights during the winter. All my plants stay outside for the rest of the year under the sun. During winter, it is my aloes that bloom under the grow lights. But many other growers successfully make their cacti flower even under growlights. Check out the KZbin channels of Cactimania and Desert Plants of Avalon. 🙂
