Hello! New piggie parents here!! We recently got 2 male piggies named Chocolate and Caramel and we are loving every moment with them. They are 3 months old.
@samanthaparfitt57012 күн бұрын
I bought two un-neutered boar's for my daughter. They were babies and had always been together. They are now about 3 years old. They may have a little tussle now and again but they love each other. They love to lay near each other and try to get to each other when my daughter and I have one each on our laps. I adore them!! My daughter wants to add to them but I think we might be disappointed. Particularly as they are not neutered!!

I agree probably not a great idea. If it upsets the bond then all 3 of them could end up hating each other 😢
@candy11401Күн бұрын
Neutering them does not really make a difference to their personalities, neutered males do not get along better than non neutered males, they will get on the same but a neutered Boar can live with Sows, you can't add a Sow with 2 neutered Boars as the Boars will fight, you can get a separate enclosure with 2 Boars if you wanted

I adopted Chubby and Marlow as two bonded boars from a shelter over a year ago. Nearly a year ago, I adopted Flopsy (then a three to four month old boar) but did introduce him to Chubby and Marlow. When Chubby passed away in January, I was successful in bonding Flopsy to Marlow and they have remained good friends since. I feel so glad to have had Flopsy available as he certainly was helpful to Marlow in his time of grief.

We have a lot of pets right now, but we got very lucky with how well they all bonded. From rabbits to guinea pigs! Our friends could not find a male guinea pig with their other one because they were both “Alfa” males, and we took him on. About a month later we got caramel. And they bonded immediately. We didn’t do all of that extra set up stuff. We just put caramel and snickers pen and a Sniffed each other and start eating hey together. ❤

I plan on getting Guinea pigs for the first time ever when I get the proper living space, and this video covered many of the questions I had. There is so much information out there and I’m glad you mentioned the part about boy Guinea pigs needing homes because from the little bit of research I’ve done they do sort of have that reputation of being more difficult to bond, but you addressed that reality with some optimism and ideas in your video so I’m making it a goal to include boy guinea pigs when the time comes. 😊 Thank you for your videos, they are so helpful and easy to follow (much of this thanks to your guinea pig supporting cast and their squeaks) 😂

And then I got another male from the Humane Society and he lived on his own for a few weeks and then I tried bonding him with some guinea pigs at the local guinea pig rescue. looking forward to seeing the new cage! In hindsight, I definitely would have chosen neutered boars when i first got my boys. One passed so we got a local rescue boar but they never solidly bonded (never fought properly either but new pig v dominant still -even a year on, older piggy doesnt really acknowlege him), would have been easier with a girl(s)
@BookishDarkКүн бұрын
The boys are so hard to match - it’s really hard to guess their personalities. I have two boats who adore each other but I also got them together as babies so that made a big difference. I tried to add a third a week later and it was a disaster. They terrorized the new addition. I tried to pair him with a baby a month after that…nope! lol the new boy ended up being the most dominant of all four. One of the first two is really sweet and would’ve been a great match for piggle three if he wasn’t already paired with his brother - piggy three is also a sweetheart and he has major ptsd from the violence inflicted on him by the first two. I’ve even tried to mix up the pairs but it doesn’t work. The first two are together and always desperate to be with one another, the other two are in adjacent cages. I didn’t know boys are typically easier to bond with, though! So interesting! I’ve only ever had boys.

something the 2 neutered boars ive had have taught me is it seems nearly impossible to bond a boar who has been in a herd of ladies with any other male. Its like once they have a girlfriend they just don't want nothing to do with a boy ever again. our first neutered boar passed at 1yr because of a URI but we are attempting to de-girl our current one but its not going well. he is always immediately defensive when a boy is put in a neutral area with him. Also we found he also is anti-handicapped... what i mean is one of our 3 remaining ladies went deaf a year and a half ago and since then he straight up attacks her. because one of the other ladies is terminal we have decided not to try to make him fit with her and the neutral piggie because the deaf lady would be left alone when our terminal lady passes. As for ladies i found having a large herd is the easiest bonding I've had up to 12 ladies in a herd with and without a neutered boar and at those sizes "most" new ladies just fit in with no issues. while smaller groups they have a higher chance to not bond with everyone.

@pigBoyzКүн бұрын
Guinea Pig boys are such sweethearts! But if in the future youre wanting a larger herd of 3 or more piggies, I wouldnt suggest getting boars just because they are a LOT less likely to welcome any new members. Even if you want to get females and put them in separate cages it wouldnt be a good idea if you already have un-neutered boars. The hormones in the air and the female scent can trigger their hormones to make their bonds break and the boys will fight. But if youre only wanting a pair of piggies and not wanting to expand then a pair of boars are a great choice! They are so sweet and have huge personalities
@SqueakDreamsКүн бұрын
Thank you that's a great point about having females in a separate cage, they do indeed smell the hormones and can fall out over it!

We've just had a failed bonding for a trio of females to add to our remaining two. They're living side by side at the moment. I don't know if we let the nerves get the better of us and gave up to early. I know they say stop at blood, but what's your opinion about chunks of fur being pulled out. It's our tiny wimpiest pig causing the kaos!!!.
@SqueakDreamsКүн бұрын
Ah I would be nervous introducing one group to pair too, that's a lot of meeting of different personalities! I think hair pulling is actually okay during introductions, it's obviously a lunge/semi-bite, so I'd be looking for the other pigs reaction and see if they back down. If it's the littlest pig (who might normally be near the bottom of the pecking order?), it could be aggression because she feels she needs to defend herself. Perhaps try again, big neutral area that you can leave say up for multiple days, pile of hay in the centre and open hides and tunnels are okay to start putting in if all seems okay. Expect dominance behaviour, but see it as a good thing because it is them slowly establishing the new hierarchy. Watch them closely and try not to separate them or interrupt them too readily 😊

Hi Sarah we would like to ask you if you have any tips on how to give medicine to a rejecting piggie
@SqueakDreamsКүн бұрын
Yes, you need to wrap them tightly in a pillowcase (towels can be too thick), make him/her into a burrito and support then with your left hand against your body, give the medication into the side of the month with a syringe, they may try spit it out at first. Offering some fresh lettuce or grass after can help it go down. My healthcare videos will help for this and other things you can do if they are feeling unwell ❤️

@candy11401Күн бұрын
This was not a good informative video especially for 1st time Piggie owners or people wanting to have more Piggies Boars do fight depending on a lot of factors, a change of environment can upset them for example or having Sows in the same room, a pair of Boars can be very good together depending on personalities and their hormonal stages normally last until they are around 8 months old, neutering Boars does not change these behaviours except when introducing to Sows as they may mellow with time Sows most of the time get along but as you mentioned baby Sows are easier to bond into a group and adults can be harder depending on personalities and how many are being added together, 2 adult Sows might be easier than bonding 3 or more adults together Your information on Neutered Boars living with Sows was very good though and I can't wait to see their new enclosure when it is all set up If your thinking of getting 2 baby Sows that are 6 months or under then they usually go into a group very well

@SqueakDreamsКүн бұрын
Good question! But no, I should have said that once females are involved, males will not accept another male, even if both are neutered. The presence of females, even if in a different cage is very likely to cause the males to fall out. So if mixing genders, the limit is one male.

If you adopt from a pet store (I did, I didn’t know about rescues for guinea pigs 🫠) the best advice I can give is STAND THERE AND WATCH THE PIGS FOR A BIT. I’d picked a ginger aby who seemed like he had a spark (and he does), and I’d considered a little black aby, but decided on an American who seemed livelier. Then the pigs all got startled, and instead of running into a closer hide in the corner, the little ginger I knew for sure I wanted ran across the cage to the tunnel where the black aby was by himself. I figured I knew I wanted the ginger, and if the ginger wanted the black aby, I’d get him instead of the American. A year later: they’re remarkably well bonded. No problems, despite puberty. They ANNOY each other but they don’t fight. The little ginger is in charge. I think they’re siblings based on how alike they look, but I’ll never know. 😂 I base the harmony on a few things: space, they’ve had 13.5sqft since they were about three months old; handling/care (they’ve only ever been cared for by me and my trusty guinea pig rodentologist hotelier); and the fact that I observed them. Theodore (the ginger) isn’t stupid. Running over to Percival (the black aby) was a choice based on a relationship. And listening to that meant I got the best two little guys. ❤ Thank you for sharing the boar love!
