Hey Jim! Just wanted to say thanks from England as I have found your lessons fantastic. I inherited a banjo from my great grandmother and never had chance to learn until lockdown in April 2020. After a year I am now beginning to work out other tunes for myself. You are the best banjo teacher on You Tube without a doubt, and your manner and encouragement to keep going and let errors slide and build up speed and confidence is unrivalled. Many thanks for what you have taught me in the last year. Cheers, Al

Hey Jim. I grew up playing guitar and banjo but stopped in my early 20s regretfully so but now I'm 57 and stared a few weeks ago looking on you tube for lessons. I found and like you thw best. I just got cripple creek down well and am just beginning to play foggy mountain breakdown. Thx for your lessons and patients making them. You are great. !!!!!!!!!

Hi Jim, re the low break, I really liked the way you cobbled together the break using only the "hook" & a couple fill in rolls to tie together several standard licks. I found one can also make a simple second low break using only the "hook" with a backward roll throughout the chord progression.
@JimPankey2 жыл бұрын
Glad you liked it. I stole those ideas from Earl.

I can't find a single good video on how to play Big Rock Candy Mountain on the banjo, all of your videos are incredibly well put together and easy to follow - is there any chance you could do a tutorial for that song?

Can you do a short video how you transition from Foggy Mountain main part to the up the neck part? Thanks. It sounds to me like some of the G lick at the end needs to be left off if playing directly into the up the neck part. Thanks

Jim, tricky for sure! I thought the up the neck was going to be the rough one- still working on the pinky, but the down the neck part had me lost but I think I have it now- maybe you can set me straight for sure. Other than the first Em part, everything else is just slightly different than the original break because of that 5-3-1-5-3-1 instead of the 3-5-3-1-3 in the original break. This break seems to use the lick as a separator of other licks more often, and since it has one extra note, that first g-lick picks up an extra string- the first string, so before the slide on the 3rd string it's 3-1-5 instead of 3-5 as in the original break. It kind of balances it out more- but drove me nuts until I kept watching you in slow motion. If I'm right about this, it makes this lesson even better for anyone who may want to try their own lick additions later on--they have to have balance. Either that, or my wife is right and I am nuts!
@JimPankey3 жыл бұрын
Hey, you're a banjo player, you are already nuts. 😆. Glad you're figuring it out with my "help".

I know you get tons of requests so I will understand if you don’t, but will you play through The Sweetest Gift ( A Mother’s Smile). On the low break what are you playing at the part right before the 4 1 1 lick? When teaching that segment you said it was 5 3 1 5 3 1 but when you play the whole break it seems like you’re playing something like 5 3 1 3 4(2nd fret) 1, then 4 1 1. Would love to know so I can learn the best sounding version. Thanks
