Expansion loops accommodate thermal movements by installing sections of piping that run perpendicular to the piping system. Although these loops are semi-rigid, they do allow for some movement, thus reducing stress loads on the anchor points in the piping system.
Expansion loops provide sufficient flexibility to prevent thermal expansion and contraction from causing excessive stresses in the piping system. Expansion loops often are required in high-temperature gas well flow lines and gas and water injection lines.
Design Guidelines For Pipe Expansion Loop.
The expansion loop is usually located on the side of the hottest line.
The expansion loop, as a rule, should be located in the center of the distance between two anchors.
The height of the expansion loop is normally twice the width.
Loops should always be positioned in the middle of a pipe run, with anchors at the end of each run. Loops are often useful on a drop rod system as axial expansion devices cannot be used on such a system.
